Interior design help needed, with pictures

I really struggle with interior design and I think I have made yet another style mistake.

I have an awkward long living room with double bays and a fireplace in the middle. I have been struggling for a while to decide how to furnish it as I had a track record of making expensive errors.

I have recently purchased the attached blue chair and footstool and it doesn't seem to look right at all. The rest of the room is grey (sofa, item of furniture and paint behind the fire). Should I cut my losses and try again or is there something I could do to make this work?

Ignore the TV - it is to be changed to something more discreet.

I would keep the curtains minimal so plain not patterned and neutral. And pull in some navy accents with navy and neutral cushions and a throw on the sofa. Chair is fabulous.

NoSquirrels · 20/05/2019 00:05

So your comfortable seating (sofa) is a long way from your TV? I think you need to just define the areas of your room and you’ll be fine.
Any chance of a diagram, with doors & windows and fireplace marked?

GatoradesDream · 20/05/2019 06:16

Here is a diagram

You have all really helped me to like my chair more (thank you!), For the first time in 4 days I walked into the living room and feel the 'i have made a mistake' fear. I have taken some photos of the rest of the room. Showing awkward shape (which I had tried to hide by having the large sofa miles away from the back wall) and the gap in the middle of the room. Gap filling ideas and window dressing ideas would be much appreciated. I'm more of a blind person and the bays would be awkward to curtain.

Does the tv need to be in there? I would lose the tv and pull every thing in toward the fireplace a a bit. Then I would add some bookcases and maybe a console table along the wall without the radiator. A big warm coloured rug and blinds at the windows. Lots of pictures. Having said that I am not too keen on a minimist look!

UCOinanOCG · 20/05/2019 06:29

Oh and I like the garden chairs in the window nooks.

GatoradesDream · 20/05/2019 06:32

The TV doesn't need to be there but needs to be somewhere in the room (not that we use it much but would miss it on the odd occasion we do). I was thinking of buying a Samsung frame TV, maybe on the wall maybe on the art type stand. I need more art for this room but I'm waiting to find pieces I love (again maybe I need to be less picky given how many years it has been)

Not much advise op, but just wanted to say what a gorgeous room! It's a great size! I don't think it looks nearly as bad as you think! Looks lovely.

senua · 20/05/2019 07:00

It is probably too big a room to think of as one thing. Split it into zones. If you call the wall with the door the "back wall", can you create two zones from bay-to-back-wall.
Put the TV on the back wall so it's not the first thing you see when you enter the room.
I think that the room needs more of a theme as you have a mixture of references in there: a modern sofa but victorian-feel chair&footstool combo; modern lighting mixed with moroccan-themed; minimalist walls&carpet contrasted with 'cosy' fireplace. What do you want the room to say?

NoSquirrels · 20/05/2019 07:03

Your furniture is too far away from each other and you just need to define some ‘zones’ to connect it all. I’ll hsbr a look at some links for you later - we also have a long living room with awkward windows/doors etc!

Your room looks lovely, it just needs some rearranging!

GatoradesDream · 20/05/2019 07:35

Thank you Nicecupofcoco

I will look at the zone idea again Senua, I tried to do that when I first moved in but I couldn't get it right, the fireplace and door aredoff centre to each other and there ended up being an odd 'corridor' feel to the area between the front of the fire place and the door wall. I also agree there are lots of styles in the room, I don't know what I'm going for, it is sort of evolving over time and I don't know which direction to go. I don't have a style as such. I just want it finished as it is driving me crazy.

Thank you *nosquirrels' any help would be much appreciated

It's s nice room and the colours all go. There is also nothing wrong with your fire place. It may he'd the chair and sofa, ornate but not too ornate.

goldpendant · 20/05/2019 23:36

First thing that strikes me is that the chair just looks very lost - couldn't put my finger on it for a while but then I realised your TV is lost, not the chair! Not that the TV should be the focal point of such a beautiful room, but it definitely looks weird when a nearby chair has its back to it.

Replace TV unit with a lovely sideboard, photos/art/plants.... move TV to wall if you must or a discreet media unit. Can you change orientation of the new chair?

AtrociousCircumstance · 20/05/2019 23:40

The wall behind the chair needs to be painted a proper colour - something deep, perhaps a blue-black.

At the moment it’s a big pale room with things dotted about. A painted wall would anchor things.

Gorgeous chair Smile

BlackPrism · 21/05/2019 00:20

It's lovely. I'd paint the walls a mid tone teal, throw an orange patterned rug in the floor with a blue velvet sofa and some big colourful pink wall art. But I like bold.

ShellieEllie · 25/05/2019 19:48

Maybe matching cushions for all seating

Astillbe · 27/05/2019 09:07

Could the sofa be turned so facing the fireplace and have a Samsung Frame tv fitted above it? Then the armchair moved to the other corner?

It's a beautiful room and I love the windows as they are, and the white walls.

NathalieBou · 27/05/2019 16:00

The blue chair is gorgeus! I really like to kind of sofa. But if you are trying to put some accent to your room, try a botanical with this chair and some plants. I really like the garden chair and I think it would fit weel!

Good luck!

Oddbutnotodd · 28/05/2019 03:24

Lovely room and chair! The one thing that jumps out at me the most is the size of your side table next to the chair. It’s too small in scale. You need something more substantial in the room. Looks too temporary. Look at Pinterest for ideas.

Kestrelsky72 · 30/05/2019 19:26

A nice Persian rug and some linen Roman blinds. A 'parlour palm' and a few bits of artwork. It just needs the finishing touches. Gorgeous!

Pythonesque · 13/06/2019 18:30

I'm imagining a curtain with a deep blue pattern on it for the window; then a lighter fabric ideally with the "reverse design" could be made into blinds for the bays, or alternatively/as well have curtains that draw right across each of the bays that would probably only be drawn in winter weather, but would complement the room even when drawn back against the main wall.

Possible fabric inspirations:

contrasting with www.lauraashley.com/en-gb/en/belvedere-midnight-fabric/3715003
Or perhaps something like:

especially if a reverse version could be found.
This is interesting:

Or something that looks a bit like these:

Finally from this site I notice :

Henna FLoral Linen Mix - in off-white and denim shows what I mean about reverse patterns. You might need to go to the second page of listings here to see it.

slinkysaluki · 14/06/2019 14:59

Id paint the walls a deep teal colour and have mustard accents

Sofasurfingsally · 15/06/2019 11:01

I agree move furniture inward and add colour by way of paint, or curtains/blinds, or large pictures. I would move the tv too, as there isn't anyway easy to see it from currently. I
