How often do you replace your sofa?

Had mine 6 years; don't like it any more for various reasons and want to get another so just made me wonder how often others replace their sofa/suite?

Haha! I have that sofa in a deep purple colour. Love it, had it for about 7 years and it's still doing really well! Even with a slightly scratchy cat and various spills. Good sofa. Why do you predict eye rolls at DFS?

Whenever my brother gets a new one! Grin

I'm a bit like that, my DB & SIL are very style conscious and I've had loads of cast offs from them as they are constantly updating and wondering why they are in debt. Unfortunately they haven't offered us a sofa yet - our's are 17 years old, still absolutely fine. I have a sofa in our study that is over 30 years old - can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Actually mine has the sticky out bit.

I'm on my third sofa since I moved into my home 2 1/2 years ago.
They have all been second hand so not fawking out a massive amount each time.

My DM is much worse, she buys new every time and changes it on average every 18-24 months. My entire 27 years I think the longest she kept a set of sofas was 4-5 years, which is actually the one I'm sat on in my house right now.

i'm on my third in 23 years (since I got my first flat). The first one lasted ages actually and saw me through about 5 different houses.

We got one of ours when we got out first flat in 2010 and another when we moved to this house in 2014. We're hoping to move agin this year so will get a new one then and the current ones will be relegated to the children's playroom.

We have two 2-seaters which are about to swap round after about 6 years as one is much more used than the other. They were about £400 each from Harveys

My first sofas lasted from 1995 until perhaps 2003 when the children trashed it by spilling stuff on its unwashable covers. The second ones lasted from then until December 2016, although they had new loosecovers in that time. They thenwent on to other owners via Freecycle (as did the first ones actually)

They were all Ikea ones, as are the new arrivals.

I've only ever had second hand sofas. They were all given to me. Our current sofas are 8 years old and I'd love new ones but I don't think I'll replace them while we have a cat.

PunjanaTea · 17/06/2017 07:59

My DFS sofas are about 10 years old and showing no sign of needing replacing.

Not sure why people need to replace every 2 years. What on earth are you doing to your sofas?

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 17/06/2017 08:36

Never!

The one I loved had to be thrown out after about 12y because it was irreparably worn out. I already had another, but there wasn't really space for two sofas, so I didn't replace it. I've had the second for about 18y. It was hugely expensive, but worth every penny. When we moved house again and had space for two sofas again, we bought our third sofa. That one is 10yo. They don't match, but we don't care - they were bought for comfort, not style.

Maybe that's the difference for us: we buy for comfort and longevity.
