How often do you replace your sofa?

Had mine 6 years; don't like it any more for various reasons and want to get another so just made me wonder how often others replace their sofa/suite?

Our was given to us about 15 years ago. I don't know how old it is; I'd guess about 30-40 years. It's still absolutely fine (has been re-covered though!)

We've had ours for about 20 years. It is wrecked but has a cover on so you can't really see all the (cat) damage. We recently moved house and I thought it would fall apart when they picked it up but it survived so we will keep it a bit longer!

I think of sofas and armchairs as a 10-15 year purchase, minimum.

We were very lucky to buy some Multiyork furniture for our first house, thanks to a family member's staff discount. We could never have afforded them otherwise but they still look virtually new seven years later and I can see what good value they are over the long term, even without the discount. We will get them re-covered when all members of the family are securely potty-trained (DC and puppy...) and the cost of this will probably be more than a new suite from DFS or similar, but I fully expect that we will have them for the next twenty years.

I promise I'm not rolling my eyes at DFS but you should be prepared for the fact that you'll be lucky to get ten years out of their fabric sofas (their leather seems to last longer). In your position I'd get something good quality in a simple shape and reasonably neutral colour and switch it up with cushions and throws when you get bored.

I love the notion that one poster has to replace her sofas every five years but reckons dfs is really good....

Ours are ancient and I don't think I'll every want a band new on
Loads of go second hand about.

We replace ours every 5 - 6 years. We are currently on our 4th lot.

I get bored!

Mine are 14 years old. M and S Abbey, brown leather. Still comfy and in excellent condition.

Ours is about 14 years old. It was expensive when we bought it. Would be expensive now! It has never sagged or any other issues.

I have to say our M&S sofas we had about 10 years ago stayed like new despite abuse by small children and a dog.

I still tired of them after my 5 year limit.

I bought my first new sofa in 2015, before then we had inherited ones of varying levels of discomfort. This is a lovely John Lewis one and unless we buy a house it won't fit in then I expect it to last at least ten years.

My parents are on their 2nd set of sofas in my life time, I'm mid-30's.

For something you sit on every day, spend as much as you can on a good quality item that lasts, good quality never goes out of fashion. Unlike that guff from DFS.

I like Duresta, I am 54, i have three Duresta sofas that are 10 years old, they still look new, I gave my Mum the first set of Duresta sofas I bought in 1989 they still look new. Multi York are good too. If you buy DFS and use interest free credit I would expect the sofas to be worn out before you have finished paying for them.

We have two m&s sofas which are about 15 years old now and absolutely brilliant. No sagging or loss of springiness at all.
We bought a dfs sofa at the same time which I think lasted 2 or 3 years? It was about a third of the price though but that shows in the quality.

We also have M&S Abbey brown leather sofas which are 11 years old and still look virtually new despite 3 kids and 2 adults using them daily. You get what you pay for.

I replace mine once the cats have completely destroyed it. I can't have any nice things here with cats.

Had ours made at sofa workshop about 20 years ago. Nearly fell over at the cost of replacing them so having them recovered then hopefully good for another 20!

My first lasted 12 years... but it was cream and eventually I couldn't get it clean enough. Bought a ten year old second hand leather one which was 5 grand new and they'd kept it in their fancy living room and only used it when they had company. I got it for 200 and it is beautiful. I expect it'll last another 10 easily.

About ten/twelve years. The first one had the Zips eaten off by our pet rat. Might have been DFS. Great sofa.

The second, from furniture village, got saggy and uncomfortable.

We on number three, now.

Mine is 20 years. My previous one was about 30 years old, second hand, and fine, but got rid of it when I heard the previous owner had been raped by her husband on it.

Mine must be 15 years or so, got it from a relative when they redecorated. It's not in great shape but incredibly comfortable, I've never come across a sofa that comfortable! We're not thinking of getting another one as long as this one is comfy, we don't have the money anyway.

Our sofa originally belonged to my grandparents. I vaguely remember them buying it when I was about 10, so it must be around 30 years old. It's really comfy and has worn well. I would guess it was reasonably expensive as my grandparents would have gone for quality for something like that.

We got it recovered about 4 years ago (it didn't "need" it, but DH had never liked the floral design!) so hopefully we'll get a good few more years out of it.

I've never bought a new sofa. The current sofa was left in the house by the vendors 9 years ago. I expect we'll get another good few years out of it. I don't understand the concept of being bored of a sofa. But nor do I understand the concept of replacing everything every few years regardless of need.

First one was 10 years old and we replaced it during a house redecoration. It was fine for 9 years until dd1 decided to use it as a bouncy castle and wrecked it. Replacement is 7 years old and still looks great. DD1 is banned from bouncing on it! Both DFS and no problem with either. Would buy from them again.

Whenever my brother gets a new one!

He has two living rooms and when he gets a new one best room suite gets demoted to living room 2 and living room 2 gets moved to our house!

It's become a family joke that I should go suite shopping with them so I can help them choose!

DH and I have never had a new sofa. First one was my parents' old one. We got rid of that when it was 25. Second one, was a friend's parents'. We had it 5 years, but it must have been getting on for 20 years old when we got rid of it (a charity shop wanted it). We got one off eBay and one in a charity shop which we had for a few years. They were both 15ish when we got rid of them. This year we bought another one off eBay. It is only 4 years old and in very good condition, so I imagine us keeping it for several years.

My parents' current sofa is my grandmother's from the 1930s (80 yrs old!). They had it refurbished about 20 years ago and it still looks very good.

Last ones Laura Ashley had about 12 years, my sofa was still like new but DHs springs were wrecked (overweight and lays on the sofa in a heavy heap).

I sold mine on eBay and bought Marks and Spencer. My sofa is like new 8 years later, his has squashed arms and the leather is all worn because he still sits like a heavy heap.

I am going to get his recovered next time we decorate.
