What would you put above the bed?

I would like to put something above the bed but I'm not sure what 🤔

I have a feature wall that is a Laura Ashley bird wallpaper, we matched the rest of the walls to the background colour of the paper so its pretty subtle depending on the light.

My gut instinct is that a painting will compete with the pattern of the wallpaper, so I was thinking more like a sunburst mirror or a sculptural piece. It's also slightly complicated by the chimney breast taking the bed off centre. It used to have a fitted wardrobe to the right so we took it down to get the superking in there and there's no option for a headboard as the bed doesn't sit flush against the wall.

I'm enclose a photo.

I'd get a headboard.

SleepFreeZone · 04/02/2017 16:59

I can't get a headboard as its a futon and would need attaching to a wall, which we can't do as the wall has the chimney obstructing it.

We are having to throw lots of money at the house as we've just had the bathrooms done, kitchen and downstairs need doing. There just isn't the budget for stud walls etc.

I really like the wallpaper.
Don't mind that the walls are a bit uneven - I think you ll have to work around it.

I like the cushions on the bed as a feature that was my first thoughts when I opened the tread. Might be my phone but I can't see the colours well- it looks like a gold colour in the gilt of the wallpaper, I wouldn't put grey cushions - maybe green or another colour ?
Other option would be hang mirror along it s long edge - would that make the bed look very off centre ?

Is this the only position in the room for the bed ? (Just throwing it out there ) a nice feature chair with the mirror upright beside it would work also

Could you get some cushions and ATTACH them to the wall as a cushion-headboard somehow? Then have your regular pillows on top of them?

goingtotown · 04/02/2017 21:47

I wouldn't do anything until I could afford to have a stud wall built.

Hushabyelullaby · 04/02/2017 22:12

We have this and it looks lovely, it's a subtle silver and gold. As it's wide but not long, you could still have your cushions.

It's nowhere near as dark as it looks in the photo of ours btw

A stud wall built where? To make that wall flat? And lose some of the room?

SleepFreeZone · 04/02/2017 23:00

I love the stud wall fixation 🙊 Thing is we have a stupidly large bed. Normal people sleep in a double bed which would fit in that room very happily in the correct position against the wall opposite the window, where the two plug sockets are. So this arrangement is fine with us, and the next people that buy the house can choose their own bed position.

I think a fabric covered? Headboard-can you make something & stick it to the wall with no more nails?

Like the mirrors over bedsides & big picture idea. With a grand gold frame & fairly big mount, a painting or print would look great

wobblywonderwoman · 04/02/2017 23:08

I think I would get good cushions for the bed (memory foam type are in primary and would work perfectly)

Then I think I would put nothing over the wall behind the bed but mount the mirror that's to the right on the chimney breast - that will make it look a bit more finished without costing a fortune.

wobblywonderwoman · 04/02/2017 23:08

Primark

SleepFreeZone · 04/02/2017 23:28

Oooh memory foam cushions is a fabulous idea!!

Beautiful wallpaper OP, I agree all you need are some more contrasting cushions, don't put anything on the wall above the bed. It's also really bad Feng Shui to do that, (something to do with not relaxing properly because your subconscious thinks it'll fall on your head!)

wobblywonderwoman · 04/02/2017 23:56

Yeah the memory foam really stat looking good and aren't expensive - we have a couple to dress the bed

You could pick up one of the colours on the duvet to put on pillows ( oxford type might look more luxurious) maybe a teal green and put a throw on the middle to dress it.

FritzyMousey · 05/02/2017 10:36

Love that wallpaper! Perfect the way you've toned the paint with the background colour. I don't have any 'feature' walls, but if I did, that's how I'd do it. Your cushions idea is prob the cheapest and easiest way of dressing that side of the room, also like pp idea of a mirror above each bedside table, with table lamps too, that would look lovely and I don't think you'd notice that it's off centre.

yomellamoHelly · 05/02/2017 11:04

That paper is gorgeous. You need a headboard though. I think it looks strange because there's nothing framing the bed.

TurkeyDinosaurs · 05/02/2017 11:04

Nothing as I have a phobia of things falling on my head when asleep

yomellamoHelly · 05/02/2017 11:08

Okay. Have now rtf. If you can't get a headboard, get a long thick chunk of foam and cover it in material. Then it can sit behind the pillows and will be sturdy enough to hold itself up giving the impression of a headboard. If you want to push the boat out you could even fashion the material as a proper cover. (This'd test my diy skills though.)

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 05/02/2017 11:18

i'd get a head board made....some sort of book case/shelf effort, you could fit the shelf to the wall shape

Something like this

I think it's a very studenty vibe with bare walls and a bed full of cushions

Purplebluebird · 05/02/2017 11:29

Nice cushions/pillows like the picture, and a mirror on the wall :) You're right, a painting would be too busy with the wall.

RueDeDay · 05/02/2017 11:32

Put the mirror on the wall, and have a big pot plant underneath... Would stop the room looking uneven

WellTidy · 05/02/2017 11:36

What about a really tall headboard. A fabric upholstered one would look good, in a colour that contrasts, so a grey maybe?

Atlantis123 · 05/02/2017 12:04

What about a shelf with some photos in frames on?

Tubbyinthehottub · 05/02/2017 13:13

Nothing. I also get freaked out by things being above the bed, especially those built in cupboards.

Excusemyfrench · 07/02/2017 12:02

I love the picture frame look. We did this above our bed and it looks really nice
