I often see San Sebastián recommended for holidays on here. If you’re thinking of coming and have any questions AMA! I’ve lived here 14 years.

I was shocked to discover it gets 3x the annual rainfall of London.

Does it rain on a lot of days, or is it just heavy rain when it does come but you will still get long spells of settled weather?

Every country has some form of crime petty or otherwise. It is interesting that the comment about crime is being pointed at “desperate illegal immigrants”.

It rains so much! And my local friends all say “ah but you are english, you must be used to it” when it rains so much more!

There are lots of different words for the types of rain too, like Eskimos have for snow.

it rains heavily, much more heavily than back home. And there’s a drizzle rain too but that was more common in the past. The mountains are beautiful and green though!

If you visit San Sebastián, always come prepared for rain.

Great thread thanks @EspanaPorfavor.
We are looking to visit SS in September, and love wild swimming. Is it warm enough then to sea swim and where do you recommend?

Rituelec · 11/06/2026 08:50

I want to visit

Hello! Oh yes, there is a beautiful bay with an island in the middle and it’s so lovely to swim out to it. My DC love to do that with DH every year and I meet them there (by boat!) with a picnic. The water temperature is a little cold for me but I would never go in in the UK for example, I hate the cold! In September it’s the warmest it gets so a good time to visit. They also put a platform out in the middle of the bay to swim to and you can rest there. There is sea life too - dolphins and octopuses occasionally so you can get lucky!

It is happily not! We have the most beautiful bay and they are not allowed there. The port is actually in the next town. Once, they did give special permission for the most expensive cruise ship in the world (called The World) to dock in the bay and it caused an outcry. It hasn’t happened since!

Awesome!

@EspanaPorfavor serious question... Would you like some free Amyl & The Sniffers tickets. We bought them & then realised we couldn't make the concert. DM me if you want them.

Hello OP, I’ve been devouring this thread! We’ll be in SS in early July (staying in the mountains and travelling around), and everything you’ve been sharing has been so interesting!

I’m curious about your comment about Vitoria Gasteiz. We were considering a day trip, but your comment has given me pause! Could you tell me a bit more about why you’re not a fan?

Go! Book in a tour at the Cathedral they will take you through the painstaking skilled work of the combined professionals to save and restore the building , after everything it’s been through it’s hard to believe it’s still stanfing. A walk around the almond shaped old town is lovely - not very commercialised, but you’ll enjoy some good pintxos and a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend Logrono too!

Hi. Will be visiting SS at the end of June and staying in Egia. Is this area ok?

egia is fine, it’s a little further back so more of a walk but the whole city is small and walkable. There’s a beautiful park in Egia (Cristina Enea park) and it’s near the station/bus station

Hi! I don’t know, maybe because I only ever go for work but there doesn’t seem to be much to do. It does have a lovely cathedral and nice old square and it’s cheaper for pintxos than SS. But there are other day trips I prefer. Have you considered Biarritz?

This is so generous of you thank you so much for the offer! I’ve looked up the dates though and we’ll be on holiday then so sadly can’t go.
