I often see San Sebastián recommended for holidays on here. If you’re thinking of coming and have any questions AMA! I’ve lived here 14 years.

@rookiemere thank you!

We chose to go to Logrono, Vitoria Gasteiz and Bilbao and Santander, we missed out San Sebastián because it was so expensive in terms of hotels - what did we miss out on?

EspanaPorfavor · Yesterday 14:12

Hi, yes Avenida de Tolosa is in a good neighborhood, it’s by the uni. It’s a 5 minute walk to the beach and then it’s a couple of kms along the seafront to the centre of town.

My friend is from SS - do you know her?!

She's always saying that we should go there on holiday, it does look absolutely beautiful. Flights from Scotland are v limited though.

We are just back, loved San Sebastián. My last night was on my own and I was meant to stay in Bilbao but it seemed so much safer to be alone in San Seb that I came back there for the night.

I’m glad you had a lovely time! Bilbao is a much bigger city (San seb feels more town like to me!) so I can understand why!

Just came on to say that I'm totally envious of you. I love San Sebastian especially bar hopping and pinchos.

What restaurants and local spots do you recommend for local food? Any dishes in particular?

I could go on and on about this!

You must try Spanish Omelette, each bar has their own version and there are good ones and bad ones but by absolute favourite is from Bar Adamo. There is one at the end of Zurriola Beach and you can get a takeaway omelette (pintxo de tortilla) and sit on the wall and watch the sunset - it’s a dream!

You must try the burnt Basque cheesecake. The most famous place for this is La Viña in the Old part

For pintxos, my favourites are the hot pintxos. Lots of tourists will get the cold ones as they are on display, but they should have a menu of hot pintxos too. Carilleras (slow cooked beef cheeks in wine) is incredible. At the moment the old part is full of queues for the bars, but you can go to other neighbourhoods for pintxos to avoid this (Gros over the river or Antiguo) one of my favourite pintxo places is in Gros - Kbzon.

If you want to eat at any of the Michelin star places, reserve in advance. But if you google “Basque Culinary Centre restaurant” you can reserve a table at the culinary university and eat Michelin quality food at a budget - the students have a restaurant as part of their project!

For breakfast ask for pantxineta with your coffee from any of the bigger bakery type coffee shops (tahoma for example)

There is so much to say about the food but you can’t really go wrong with it!

@number1of7 which spa was it please?

The spa is probably La Perla - it’s gorgeous. Right on the beach. You can get a two hour circuit for about 30 euros (more if you want a massage etc) and it has a lovely restaurant/pintxo bar above it too with views of the bay.

I’m just across the border from you in France <waves>.

Any boutique hotel recommendations? Is the area dog friendly? Merci.

Is robbery a big problem? We got our campervan broken into and stuff was taken. Loathed to return tbh. We love north Spain but avoiding San Sebastián this time.

How would I get there from London? I’ve looked into it as DH keeps on about going but I couldn’t see flights … what is the nearest airport or station.

The closest airport is actually Biarritz (well San Sebastián has an airport but it’s tiny) and you can go Stansted to Biarritz with Ryanair for silly prices - I’m going to London this weekend and it was 25€!

otherwise Bilbao via Vueling from Gatwick, and then the bus from Bilbao.

Do they still do bocadillos de jamon Serrano?

And do they still do the best cafe con leche?

God I miss those

Although talking about Spain in general really

Edited

Ahhh of course, although here it’s all about the pintxos so it’s mini bocadillos de jamon, which i often get for lunch with my cafe con leche! If I get a full size bocadillo I LOVE bocadillo de calamares with alioli. The food is amazing yes!

The one thing I struggle to recommend is hotels as I never need to stay in them.

yes very dog friendly, although June to September they aren’t allowed on the beaches so you’re better off coming out of season as the doggies love running along the sand and socializing with each other.

i love being close to France, we often go over for the skiing in winter and Les Landes in summer!

Oh no I’m so sorry to hear that.

Its difficult to say as maybe I’ve just been lucky but I’ve never had any problems but I am careful, I don’t leave my stuff unattended on the beach like a lot of people do for example. I think there are quite a few desperate immigrants here who can’t get across the border into France and are dumped back in northern Spain (a bit like the “small boats” problem, Spain has this too) and although they do get help there is inevitably some crime.

Ive been told by lots of locals that the safest time was ironically during the heyday of ETA - when the terrorists were at large you could leave your cars unlocked apparently.

Is she Scottish? Does her name begin with a K or a C?! It’s quite possible as it’s a small town and English speakers tend to find each other!

The beauty! It’s definitely the prettiest of all those place, and of course the beach/sea.

Bilbao is best for culture/art/museums and shopping
Logrono for the wineries and to get more Spanish/less Basque
I am not a fan of Vitoria Gasteiz at all!
Pamplona is another nice city in the region.

Northern Spain, almost on the border with France. In the Basque Country so the culture is not typically Spanish at all. I have a holiday home in another part of Spain and they feel like completely different countries.

it used to be well known for the ETA group of terrorists but since they disbanded it has become more and more famous as a foodie destination.

Lots! If you like fish I recommend Abakando

the Croquetaria on Calle Matia (runs perpendicular to Avenida Tolosa) is great for croquettes. And the best little Mexican called La Mera Mera

My daughter was accidentally born in San Sebastián (15 years ago this week), and we stayed for a month while she was in the neonatal unit. It's one of my favourite places on earth (see username!). The people are so nice. We still communicate regularly with our 'twin family', whose daughter was born on the same day - in fact it's become an extended twin family, grandparents and all. Whenever we visit them we just eat and eat; and swim and walk so we can eat more. I love swimming out to the island from la Concha. Amara is 'our' neighbourhood - Aukera bar restaurant is a great local place!

What an amazing story! My DC Were born there too, I didn’t speak Spanish yet and it was quite a nerve wracking experience with a thankfully good birth, it must have been really tough for you having dd in neonatal for a month. How did you sort her passport etc to get back!?

ah yes, I like to get the boat to the island with the picnic and DH and dc swim there to meet me!

Our twin family helped us with all the paperwork (basque birth certificate anyone?!) and the embassy in Madrid got a passport sorted for her (my neighbour had to find my birth certificate and send it to Madrid!) but in the end we got a medical transport home via insurance, so her first flight was in a lear jet. DH went home by easyJet with an extra bag for a whole iberico ham. Are your kids at school there? Do they speak basque as well as Spanish, and take part in lots of parades?
