I know no one probably cares but ive just booked a holiday for my ds and i!
It took me a lot to leave my really toxic relationship (fellow mumsnetters reallyvgave me the strength).
Ive worked super hard to build things in my business and im finanally having my dream of taking my 9 year old away in august to the canaries.
I look a really mess, im a chubster with big saggy boobs and a bad back but i do not care. Travel company have ensured hotel fine for disabilities a and flight etc.
I know its minor to some but i just wanted to tell someone!
Im a bit nervous about cases and my back but il find a way for my ds.
Anyway not bragging just wanted to tell someone that when you leave toxic relationships things can improve after the sadness

Fuerta Ventura (sorry im rubbish with spelling).
A couple of family members have been and the hotel is very good with kids

Of course you have a right to book a holiday.
Decorating can wait for a rainy day and as for diets, botox etc, time in the sun with your boy will be worth more than those in terms of yours and his wellbeing❤How exciting for the two of you.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/04/2026 17:57

How exciting, decorating can wait!

Yes its school hols so he was cheering in the travel agents when we booked it. So worth it.
My mum said shecwill get him some holiday clothes and my cousin has lost weight so said she will give me her old holiday clothes.
I already have some wedges and sandals.
Il need to try get a pull along case becase of my back but my neighbour said he will pack the car up for me and hopefully somebody at car park might help me load it onto the trolley

That sounds like a massively non brag and i hope you have a fabbbbbbbbulous time and the post-toxic relationship thing is a fcuking nightmare to process but hooray for your holiday and seriously well done. Which isn't meant to sound patronising at all but its giving me flashbacks (am empathising with you) and I'm seriously so glad and happy for you snd booking a holiday can be stressy "so if you'd like to come up to thr front and get your star of the week award" etc etc. Honestly it's bloody brilliant. I am so happy for you both.

You can get cases with wheels now where you don’t have to drag them behind you, you can push alongside you, which may help your back! Or your DS may be delighted to push the case- I used to love being allowed to do this as a kid, I felt so grown up!

Have a lovely time, you sound like you’ve really earnt the break!

Ahh your post made me smile, well done, I hope you both have a fabulous time. I’ve just booked my first holiday abroad for twenty six years, just me and my two youngest (7 and 9) and I’m definitely very nervous (youngest a wheelchair user) but also proud of myself. Toxic relationships can leave you feeling diminished, but actually you can do and be amazing.

This sounds lovely. It will do you both the world of good. Congrats Op
Agree with the 4 wheel suitcases, they sort of go alongside you and there’s no weight to them at all. Much easier than pull along ones.

No pulling/dragging along required if it has 4 spinny wheels on the bottom, you should be able to just push it along in whatever direction

try home bargins, they have some lightweight ones for £30. I have one & its a god send.

for practicalities, do you need to book airport assistance for your disabilities? Might be an idea to get this done with the airline/airport now if you need it as its will be busy season.

hope you have a lovely time, you 100% deserve the treat & to have a holiday with your son so do not worry about other things you could have spent the money on.

FolioQuarto · 09/04/2026 19:09

Wishing you a very sunny and relaxing time. When your son grows up, do you think he would remember the holiday more than he would remember you having freshly painted skirting boards? The answer should free you from any guilt 😊

I didnt know they offered assistance il look into this, thankyou so much

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/04/2026 21:08

Great idea to look into assistance at the airport. Depending on where you’re flying from and to, there can be a lot of walking.

You and DS will each have your own luggage allowances and for a holiday to somewhere warm you’re unlikely to need your full weight allowance, and it would be a good idea to have one smaller case each . The ones with 4 wheels move really easily.

A boring question, but have you got travel insurance, passports and GHIC cards?

MiddleAgedDread · 09/04/2026 21:12

Definitely get cases with 4 wheels, one in each corner, and you don’t even need to pull them on smooth surfaces, they just glide alongside you.

ay30916 · 09/04/2026 21:35

Also check if you can get a sunflower lanyard. I got one when I travelled with my stepdad & people at the airport just looked out for us a bit more, opened lanes etc….if your back impacts your mobility it might be useful.
