Where in Greece in May

Orquid9 · 29/12/2025 08:37

This time I start planning all the holidays.

Thinking of going to Greece in May. We do like a beach holiday with some sightseeing and good food.

We have been in Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakyntos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Rhodes. Would like to try somewhere new.

Maybe Crete?

Parga or Nafplios on the mainland?

Crete yes!

MiniCoopers · 29/12/2025 12:22

For May it needs to be somewhere South closer to Turkey

I agree. Tried Lesvos this year-only 8 miles from Turkey. Great place and I’ve been to most of the islands.

Not the Ionians in May, the water is bloody freezing! 🥶

Parga is amazing but I wouldn't go there in May unless you don't want to swim.

herbalteabag · 29/12/2025 13:24

I'd probably choose Crete for the climate and lots to do and see as well.

countdowntonap · 29/12/2025 13:28

Beaches, sightseeing and good food = Naxos

Orquid9 · 29/12/2025 13:30

If we go to Crete where should we base ourselves? We will have a car.

For me it would have to be Chania, in the west of the island. Holidayed there many times: more authentic Crete experience imo. Lots of Greeks holiday there, lovely Venetian buildings and gorgeous little back streets to wander around. Of all the Greek islands I’ve been to, Crete is the only one I’ve returned to repeatedly.

I went to Almyrida on Crete in October this year. We were in a villa about a 20 minute walk from the beach. It was probably the best holiday I have had, absolutely lovely. The people were so friendly and the food was great. Hopefully will return this year.

Do you have any recommendations on where to stay? And also how to get there - ferry from Athens?

countdowntonap · 29/12/2025 13:51

I’ve taken ferries there from Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos - depending on where I got the cheapest flights/combination of islands I wanted to see.

Lefkada.. you land on mainland and take a coach to the island... its on marsh land.
Half hour ferry ride to Kefalonia.

Thanks. I think Lefkada may be a bit cold in May; but would love to go there one day.

Lefkada is a lovely temperature at the end of May (we have been for half term the last 3 years running). It's pretty warm and definitely nice weather for beaching. Last time we had a few slightly cooler days (just a few degrees cooler than what I'd like) but it was still summer clothes weather. Lovely island.

MrsNathanDrake · 29/12/2025 23:45

Absolutely recommend Crete. We love Elounda in the east (about an hour from Heraklion airport) which is a lovely little town with loads to see in the area. Will be lovely and warm as well.

CeeJay81 · 30/12/2025 06:38

Id recommend Rethymnon. That way you can drive to both East and West areas. Absolutely love crete. Amazing architecture and amazing hospitality.

Orquid9 · 30/12/2025 09:20

Thank you all. Crete it is. Can’t wait.

I loved Chania, it is a beautiful place with lovely streets and restaurants. I'm not sure where the nearest decent beach is though, but Crete has a very good bus service so you can choose a side of the island and use the bus to get about and see what you want from your base. There is a little train that looks like a cheesy tourist train but is anything but - it does great trips and the best one is the day trip into the White Mountains, I thought it was spectacular.

MiniCoopers · 30/12/2025 17:46

Chania is beautiful. It’s a great choice
