Where in Greece in May

This time I start planning all the holidays.

Thinking of going to Greece in May. We do like a beach holiday with some sightseeing and good food.

We have been in Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakyntos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Rhodes. Would like to try somewhere new.

Maybe Crete?

Why not Athens?

Great beaches on south coast and plenty of historical sights and museums around the centre of the city. The food scene is epic too.

Please can you tell me more about the beaches? I’m planning 5 nights on the Athenian Riviera this summer before heading to the islands.

For me it would have to be Chania, in the west of the island. Holidayed there many times: more authentic Crete experience imo. Lots of Greeks holiday there, lovely Venetian buildings and gorgeous little back streets to wander around. Of all the Greek islands I’ve been to, Crete is the only one I’ve returned to repeatedly.

I’d second Chania it’s on great bus routes as well we’ve never needed a car, we’ve stayed nearby in kalyves and more recently in agia marina both had lovely beaches.

If you do plan on renting a car you could always factor in a couple of nights in another location say to get over to the east side or visit the beaches in the west such as Balos or drive up into the hills and to the south coast.

We stayed at Stella palace in anilipsis Crete last May. Great hotel but I wouldn’t go back in May again it was freezing at night and very windy. The pools and sea were chilly too.

We went to Greece last May, we flew into kalamata airport and stayed in Stoupa. It was absolutely beautiful, not too hot but warm enough for us. Lots to see and do but would definitely recommend hiring a car!

We stay in a little village about 10 mins from Almyrida called Vamos. It feels Greek, has lovely restaurants and you have a choice of beaches within a 20 minute drive.

I recommend an evening in Chania too - its beautiful.

Really? Would have thought Crete will be very warm that time of the year.

I live in Glyfada where there are a few public beaches with sunbed rentals, but I prefer to go further along if I am planning more than a few hours in the sea.

In nearby Voula there is DOT and The C, which are both what we call organised beaches - with restaurants, bar and sunbeds etc.

A little further on in Vouliagmeni there is Akti, Zen and Krabo. The famous blue flag, luxury beach club - that is now part of The Four Seasons - is Astir. Vouliagmeni lake, known for its thermal waters is also worth a visit.

In the next suburb is Yabanaki and the Varkiza resort.

The above are places I go to when planning to spend the day, or taking visiting friends and family. You can google and book beds online etc.

There are plenty of 'free' spots I go to as a local when I just want to spend an hour or two in the sea. These places are dotted all along the coast, and can be seen while walking.

I also highly recommend Limanaki for an early morning swim. It is a rocky cove with deep crystal waters, ideal for diving too. There is a bus that stops just above it.

May can be tricky in Greece. This year it didn't properly warm up until June.

The later in May you go the better the chances of warmer weather.
