Do you think this sounds too expensive?

Organising a group trip with some friends. We all earn a similar amount, no kids yet. We all earn about £50k pa so not heaps but an ok amount.

I’ve been doing the planning. Found flights for £500 (direct long haul) and a week’s villa for £300 each.

So £800 for a week long haul in a posh villa. Most of the friend group is keen but one of the girls keeps saying this is hugely expensive for a holiday and how can we be comfortable spending that much?

People have different out goings and ideas and how much to spend. Have you asked her how much she would be happy to pay or suggested she looks for a better deal?

I’d consider that good value for long haul, but I guess it depends on your friend’s fixed outgoings and holiday budget as to whether it’s okay or too expensive.

£800 for a long haul holiday is amazing value in my view.

Did you all agree on the destination or is this friend expecting you to go somewhere short haul with cheaper flights?

I’d suggest that she is welcome to do the planning, but I would be amazed if she found a better deal than that!

Well might make sense to an agree a budget first and then see what you can find within the budget. If money is an issue, shorter haul flight might be preferable. Salary is irrelevant, we all have different opinions on what we value.

I suppose it depends on what the original brief was. If the idea was to go for a weekend in Amsterdam and now it's a week in Barbados, then yes it's expensive compared to what they originally thought.

If the idea was always to go long haul in a lovely villa, then it's a bargain!

Need more details. How many friends? Any room sharing? How long is the flight? Time of year?

Assume she doesn't want to go long haul then? Did you agree a destination / budget before searching? It's not expensive for, say, a Caribbean flight / villa.

You did it the wrong way round. You agree a budget, then look. Not look and see its too expensive.

If her budget is £500 for flights and accommodation, you need to look elsewhere.

If you have a budget if £1000 PP you've found a bargain

Long haul it sounds like a good deal but we don't know what her income and outgoings are. We often assume that our friends earn similar to us but often then don't.

Also you mention a villa, so self catering. Are you going to be cooking at home, eating out etc. This is all adds up and often people have different expectations.

What kind of holiday was planned first day?

I just went onto BA site and chose a random date in February (so pretty peak season) and Barbados return flight was £550.

Oh I see... when I heard long haul I was thinking of Bali, Maldives, etc.

That's fair, Barbados is on the closer end of long haul!
Just switched same dates to the Maldives and it was £850.
Quite tempted now!
