Where to go for a weekend break in the UK

I'm looking to book a weekend away at the end of September for myself and DP and looking for ideas on where we could go. Not London or Brighton (DP works in London and we went to Brighton earlier in the year). Open to suggestions for city breaks, countryside or beach so any ideas would be appreciated please

Bath.

and treat yourselves to the Thermea spa.

BingBongBoo86 · 27/07/2024 20:22

Stratford upon Avon
York
Winchester

soupfiend · 27/07/2024 20:25

York
New Forest
Winchester
Woodhall Spa/Lincoln

I would also say tons of places in Derbyshire and Staffordshire

Also dont discount the midlands, I dont mean the posh places like Stratford, dare I say Stoke on Trent and the towns and canals about the place. I know people will laugh at that.

I like Deal in Kent. Plenty to do for a weekend, nice walks, good restaurants.

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 27/07/2024 20:32

Aldeburgh

Not sure how far you want to travel or where you’re travelling from but Whitley Bay & Tynemouth would be my weekend getaway.
Beautiful coastal walks, nice clean beaches, a short walk into Tynemouth, there are some lovely little bars/coffee shops and places to eat. Newcastle is only 8 miles away too so you can easily drive/get train there on one of the days.

York, Liverpool & Chester all great. Lots to do.

Oxford
Cambridge
York
Lake District (keswick)

Liverpool, vibrant city centre and lovely down by the docks.

Redhairandhottubs · 27/07/2024 20:52

Thanks for all the ideas. I've been to Bath a few times and don't really like it. I love York but went there last year. We live very close to Winchester.

I will research all the other suggestions. Thank you!

Oxford is lovely for a weekend.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 27/07/2024 21:05

West Wales has some lovely places

SabrinaThwaite · 27/07/2024 22:07

The Jurassic coast could be an option? Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Swanage.

IoW - you could take the hovercraft across for a retro experience.

Exmoor.

Depends how far you want to travel for a weekend?

MinnieMountain · 28/07/2024 06:25

Bradford on Avon.

Hope in Derbyshire.

Oxford is lovely but we've been there a few times and went to Weymouth in June (the beach is beautiful but the town's a bit rough at night!) Jurassic Coast could be an option, I've been to Lyme Regis but I don't think DP has. DP has family in Wales and is going in August. I'll research all the other suggestions, thank you!

Yeah I'm being drawn to Liverpool. DS went recently and loved it. I'll have a chat with DP to see whether she'd prefer a city or seaside break. There's some great suggestions here, places I'd not thought of. Thank you!

Portsmouth definitely worth considering- it has improved a great deal. Plus IOW worth a look as well.

Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth is a good day out - the Mary Rose museum
is excellent.

Small, cute city. Stay in the newly refurbished Ripon Inn, with great gardens.

Five minutes into the market square. Lots of independent restaurants and cafes.

Loads of local walks and other small towns to visit ( Pateley Bridge, Grassington). A large cathedral, Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall.

Salcombe in Devon? North Cornwall? Or around Fowey? Lots to see. There’s also somewhere like the Cotswolds.

Bristol is a great weekend city. Manchester is too.
