Where to go for a weekend break in the UK

I'm looking to book a weekend away at the end of September for myself and DP and looking for ideas on where we could go. Not London or Brighton (DP works in London and we went to Brighton earlier in the year). Open to suggestions for city breaks, countryside or beach so any ideas would be appreciated please

We live in the south of England and not far from Portsmouth. I love Cornwall and have had loads of amazing holidays there... not ruling out going again, although you really need good weather for Cornwall, it's a bit dire in the rain. Really dislike Salcombe, not sure why as I know it's popular.

I've never heard of Ripon so folk have a look at that link,thank you! I like Bristol but DP isn't keen. I've been to Manchester a few times, would happily go again though.

Loads of great ideas, thank you! I know there's nowhere quite like Brighton, but any suggestions for somewhere beachy with a Brighton type vibe?

Chester is my favourite city closely followed by York not really a city but Matlock Bath is gorgeous and plenty of things to do!

How can you not of heard of Ripon? North Yorkshire is a long way from you. Leeds is a good city break but no beach!

Margate? Fashionable now. Broadstairs? Sandbanks?
