Relaxing solo holiday - any recommendations?

DH doesn't like holidays and most of my friends have young children, so it looks like if I want a holiday I'll need to do it alone.

Ideally somewhere warm with a pool, but with a nice town or village nearby. I'm thinking self catering, having breakfast and dinner in the apartment and maybe going out for lunch. Ideally somewhere easily accessible by public transport.

I'm tired and stressed and just need to recharge, get some sun, eat some nice food and sleep a lot.

Anyone been on a similar type of solo holiday? I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Playa Blanca in Lanzarote comes to mind. Easy to get to/around and would have self catering options.

Friend does this every year in Minorca, always gets a balcony so she can sit and drink wine and eat cheese and not have to mix if she doesn’t want to.

OccasionalHope · 16/06/2024 16:02

Budget?

That sounds lovely, I've never really thought of Minorca before. I'll look into it.

Lanzarote could be an option, but I've heard the weather can be a bit hit and miss and its quite windy. Is that the case?

This is me this summer except I'm newly separated (one of the reasons being that DH didn't want to travel anywhere further than Norfolk without a fight).

I'm going to Mallorca for a week - all inclusive but plan to take myself out for a few nice beach cafe lunches.

Cherrycee · 16/06/2024 17:28

That sounds fabulous @BlackBean2023 - hope you have a lovely time.

Maybe I shouldn't write off AI just yet.

I’m also doing a similar solo trip next month!

I’m going to Crete for 12 days.

It’s my first summer after my break-up last year and I will have just finished a medical treatment, so it’s going to be a trip of recovering, recharging, eating amazing Greek food, and getting lots of sleep + sun. Can’t wait 😊

Done that loads in Lanzarote.

Puerto del Carmen is a 15m cab ride from the airport and all walkable, lots of adults-only hotels for not much money.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 16/06/2024 20:15

I've gone solo in Barcelona, Mallorca and Malta.
Malta was actually my first and I chose it as they speak English as a first language. I picked somewhere with a party reputation much to my regret but its a nice island and if I went again I'd stay somewhere Iike Gozo.

Mallorca is now my go to, and I usually go somewhere like Can Pastilla which is very short (2 stops) on the bus from the airport.

I have never had issues being a solo female traveller in any location, and I love eating when I want, when I want.

I enjoy all inclusives on my own.

longdistanceclaraclara · 16/06/2024 21:44

Ibiza, quiet side, es cana, Santa Elulia, both have adults only options if you want to avoid kids. Would be my idea of heaven.

SmashingGemini · 16/06/2024 21:45

I’d recommend Menorca. I haven’t been alone but would happily do so as it feels really safe.
I like the adults only Artiem Carlos hotel. It’s in a nice authentic Spanish area only about a mile from the beautiful capital, Mahon. Lovely staff and its got amazing views.

Thanks all, lots to work with here!

Did anybody you feel awkward being alone in the hotel or out for dinner?

Only fleetingly before I got used to it. Take a book or a Kindle, but people watching and enjoying your food is awesome!

Some places are more solo diner friendly than others. Walk round and scope them out. If somewhere is welcoming I’ll have three courses and cocktails and go back another night.

YorkNew · 17/06/2024 12:39

I found meal times absolutely fine (I do eat out on my own in the UK). I took a magazine to the bar in the evening before dinner and that worked well. After dinner I went back to my room so would recommend booking somewhere with a balcony.
Having a brunch and then earlier dinner can work well too.
I particularly enjoy excursions on my own as even when I travel with others I book solo days out.
I find pool/beach/walking around during the day is really enjoyable on my own.

gettinabitwindy · 17/06/2024 13:25

I'd go to Chania in Crete. Lovely town/harbour and a beach.

OccasionalHope · 17/06/2024 14:25

I always take a book or kindle to read at meals or in the bar.

Great to hear, that’s where I’m off to in a couple of weeks 😊

I've booked a 3 night AI holiday in Menorca next month. It'll be my first ever solo holiday - I can't wait!

ASighMadeOfStone · 18/06/2024 10:55

I've not done a solo holiday (also have dh who doesn't travel, but DD at uni comes with me so far) but have always seen single travellers in Menorca (Cala Galdana) Portugal (Alvor) and Austria (Seefeld) in recent years.
I avoid "family" oriented places anyway and wouldn't have an issue being alone in any of these.

I used to do a great deal of solo travel before I got married again and never felt awkward. No one knows your circumstances. No one is probably even looking at you. Take a book and your phone. Enjoy it!

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 30/08/2024 15:11

@Work2live how was your solo trip? I'm so tempted to book one
