TUI have a lovely looking hotel in Tunisia. In the Hammamet region.
Anyone been there. It would be me DH and DD12.
Just looking to chill out for a bit in the sun
A trip or 2 out would be nice and a wonder into a nearby town.

Once, never again. Hotel was ok but once outside I didn't feel safe at all. Got followed by local men offering to be our guide/taxi drivers, wouldn't take no for an answer, got cornered and threatened in a market for not buying anything, and didn't find the bars/restaurants very welcoming. This was 20 years ago but it put me off for life

elQuintoConyo · 17/05/2024 07:48

idontjetwashthefucker your name begins with H and we went to Hammamet together around 1992! Exact same feeling, exact same cornering in a shop, exact same low-level threat. Hideous.

I'm sure other posters will come along and say a lot has changed - and I hop it has. I'd never go back.

WitchyBits · 17/05/2024 07:52

I've been 4 times. If you stay in the hotel area or only go on hosted trips is absolutely fine. You get the occasional hawkers on the beach or pushy water sports salesmen but you just firmly say no thanks and keep walking without making eye contact. They are relying on you being too polite to ignore them and then guilt trip you so just don't allow it.

artfuldodgerjack · 17/05/2024 07:59

I went around 17 years ago, it was great as long as you didn't leave the hotel...
Even the hotels own beach you got hassled, was supposed to be private, but lots of men trying to "sell" you stuff- even though they weren't carrying anything.

We went on quite a few organised trips as they were so cheap and really the only safe-ish way to get around.

Everywhere you went though it was just men hassling, trying to touch you, getting too close for comfort. I didn't feel comfortable at all. Would I go back? No. It was beautiful though, seeing the sun rise in the Sahara was unbelievably beautiful, some of the places we visited were amazing but I couldn't put up with the constant unwanted attention.

Hendoparty · 17/05/2024 08:01

Awful, we stayed in that area about 8 years ago. Hotel was terrible and felt very unsafe on the 2 occasions we left the hotel. Wouldn’t recommend it at all

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/05/2024 08:13

Tunisia was rated worst holiday destination recently, disclaimer I've never been and would never go but from what I can gather there are issues with how locals treat women, it can be quite dirty, animals are openly mistreated....

OdeToBarney · 17/05/2024 08:18

Went with a friend around 15 years ago. Never never again. Same as above really.

Glendaruel · 17/05/2024 08:19

Went about 10 years ago to Tunisia with my mum and had lovely break. Chilled out on beach and booked on to couple trips, one to do some shopping and one up to Tunis.

onemoretine · 17/05/2024 08:20

I went to Yasmine Hammanet

Bananadramallamas · 17/05/2024 08:21

Same as above here, too. In addition the hotel staff spent most of their time fawning over the German tourists, and ignored everyone else.
There are many other nicer places to holiday.

onemoretine · 17/05/2024 08:23

Sorry posted too soon... it was quieter than hammanet and we never got bothered by people bar at the beach. We had previously been to Egypt so that was my biggest fear but it was really good. Weather was lovely and it was super cheap.

YorkNew · 17/05/2024 08:24

I went last year and had a nice holiday, I did one big organised trip (excellent) and two smaller things on my own.
It’s not such a good holiday if you like to wander around outside the hotel whereas somewhere like Tenerife is great for walking along the promenades and mooching about.
If you want a mainly hotel based good value holiday then Tunisia would work.
The excursions are very good and cheap, I only went for four nights so booked one long one as I went partly to have lots of spa treatments. Next time I’d book an excursion every other day.

SaltyGod · 17/05/2024 08:26

Worst holiday we have ever had. We nearly left early.

Of course not representative of all views, just my experience.

Rocknrollstar · 17/05/2024 08:26

We went over 20 years ago and agree. You have to be firm - people come up to you and claim to be the waiter in your hotel. Our hotel was full of elderly Germans. On the other hand, money went a long way and DH and I travelled around on our own quite safely. It is much more Islamic now and I wouldn’t go again. A friend’s daughter was caught up in the terrorist attack on the beach a few years ago.

amylou8 · 17/05/2024 08:30

We've had some great holidays in Tunisia, but as with anywhere in north Africa you need to be realistic. It's a lower middle income country and you won't get the same standards that you get in Europe. The streets are dirty and dusty, road safety terrible, food hygiene dubious. You'll get hassled in shops to 'Just look cheaper than bloody Asda', and hassle round the pool to buy excersions and have you eyebrows done.
You'll get much more for you money than in Europe, eating outs cheap, taxis are cheep (if you survive) and there's plenty of culture and historical sites there. Just depends what you want out of a holiday really.

Therageisreal · 17/05/2024 08:32

Admittedly 20 years ago. I would consider going now as my girls are young but no way would I take a 12 year old girl.

Blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahlalala · 17/05/2024 08:32

I went a few years ago with a group of (female) friends. Wouldn’t go again. Felt very unsafe and one night we were followed. Weather lovely, hotel lovely, outside hotel not so lovely.

NippyCrab · 17/05/2024 08:39

I went with my ex husband around 20 years ago and it was awful. I wouldn't take a young girl there, ever. I got hounded apparently because I have fair hair. The food wasn't great, especially breakfast. Don't take a taxi 😂. We got locked in a shop and when he went to get water to make tea we legged it and he was shouting after us. Just don't go, there are so many beautiful places to explore, especially with your daughter.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/05/2024 08:46

We went about 25 years ago and really enjoyed it. Lots of history and I liked the hotel. I can speak French which seemed to help us get by and I never felt vulnerable anywhere even though I was a lovely young blonde then. I was with my husband though, it might've been different if I'd been with other young women.

Growlybear83 · 17/05/2024 08:46

We've been to Tunisia many many times and it is a lovely country, particularly if you get away from the main tourist resorts. Some of the hotels in Hammamet and Sousse are lovely but it's such a shame not to get out and see some of the country. You will get some harassment from locals in the big resorts but it's nothing like the scale of Egypt, and it's generally a very safe country. The weather is lovely. As are the beaches. And Tunisian food is very under rated - some of the best meals I can remember have been in little restaurants down side streets in Tunisia and Morocco.

The train system is surprisingly good and it's easy to travel around on your own. We've hired a car several times, and the roads and standard of driving aren't too bad at all. If you go with the right attitude you will have a lovely holiday.

Lol no, I'm not H. I stayed in Sousse with my partner

Idontjetwashthefucker · 17/05/2024 12:11

I also forgot to mention the large groups of local young men who used to descend on the hotel in the evenings, making a beeline for any women sitting on their own.

Thank you for your replies.
It's put me right off. I've booked Kos instead

We went a couple of months ago, loved it, especially for the price! We went into a couple towns. However, I am a man, with my wife and it was fine. Women going out without a man with them can get hassled I am told, so if just women/girls probably best not to leave the resort.

Confortableorwhat · 17/05/2024 15:19

Not recently, but from what I gather it's getting worse.

I went as a young teen with my parents, and the behaviour of men, towards me and DSis, even when our father was with us, made my Dad the angriest I've ever seen him, even in the complex we were staying in.

Plus the terrorism risk now.
