Bloody expensive holidays

Booking flights to Almeria with Jet2. 400 quid each in August! Think this will be out last holiday abroad for a while! Anyone else noticed prices for holidays gone bananas?
I understand why but this is one luxury we will be cutting back on!

£400? Surely you would struggle to get just a flight for that.

Rayn22 · 01/04/2023 21:31

Sorry that is just the flight. We paid 170 each last year.

SnarkyBag · 01/04/2023 21:33

Yes just looking today and the jet2 package holiday we went in in 2019 is now almost £4K more expensive!

Rayn22 · 01/04/2023 21:37

Wow! That is a massive jump. It's hard isn't it because when you work so hard you need a break. I know it's a first world problem but we don't eat out or do much all year round so we can go on holiday. We sacrifice in other areas so we can go away but looks like we will have to rethink. We looked at ferris to France Portsmouth to Caen but they have shot up too.

Have you only just booked? I always book
mind on the app on flight release day.

Londre · 01/04/2023 23:09

I agree OP. I was looking at flights to Australia and I can remember when they were ~£600-700 in 2019 and now the cheapest is £1,500! You could have got business class seats nearly at those prices in 2019!

TizerorFizz · 01/04/2023 23:12

@Rayn22 Its late to book for August. That’s why it’s expensive. Book in Sept for August. Cheep flights are no more!

Rayn22 · 02/04/2023 10:14

Yep! Only just booked. Started looking for next year and it seems abit cheaper. Strange!

OP posts:
newname2022 · 02/04/2023 10:20

Yes it seems you need to book a good year in advance.

Luckily we booked ours in October. Paid 3150 for 7 nights in Spain in June, flights and AI hotel for 2 adults + 2 children. I checked last week and the price has now gone up to 4650!!

Booking.com have good free cancellation and no booking fees options so I'm thinking I'll secure a hotel on there well in advance e.g I found a Hotel in Majorca for April '24 for 580 self catering for 4 of us.

EggyBreads · 02/04/2023 10:35

Yep cheap flights are now a thing of the past. Flight prices have pretty much doubled (if not more) since the pandemic. It's now cheaper to pick a package holiday.

Pointblank2 · 02/04/2023 10:39

Jet2 do seem to have gone up loads. As an eg I was looking at lanzarote for 2 people, same amount of luggage, same seats pre booked. Jet 2 was over 600 for the two of us, Ryanair 340 for exactly the same.

Try Ryanair

StillWantingADog · 02/04/2023 10:41

Tbh booking now for august that doesn’t surprise me at all. For august I’d be booking the previous summer, as soon as possible

Mumdiva99 · 02/04/2023 10:44

Not difficult to understand. Last year we were still in the will we/won't we get away mindset. Other countries kept changing their covid rules. People were more cautious. Now.....we are back to normal. As you have said book early pay less. You are booking quite late.

mac1974 · 02/04/2023 10:50

Prices are insane. I was looking at Mexico yesterday out of interest. Precovid it was about £5k for a family of 4. Now it's close to £10k. Insane!
We are going to France this year but then I think we will have to have a couple of years of holidaying in the UK.

RandomExpletive · 02/04/2023 11:48

Loads of ppl I know are going away now at Easter instead of summer because prices this year are so prohibitive

That’s been our experience the last two years

I usually book it all separately but the last 3 trips I’ve booked a package as has been a lot cheaper, eg Greece this August was £500 cheaper as a package with Olympic

Choconut · 02/04/2023 12:12

We booked 5 short haul hols with easyjet Sept/Oct last year for the school hols this year and didn't pay more than £170 pp. It pays to book very early, now more than ever. I'm not willing to pay long haul prices at the moment, especially not in the school holidays.

Doesn't seem to always be the case any more. We have been monitoring it for weeks - for flight to US. Prices were never cheap sadly.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 02/04/2023 12:28

We booked our august tickets very late last year (June) and got a bargain!! A lot cheaper than they were earlier in the year but then we were quite flexible with dates. JET 2 seems to have gone very expensive though

TizerorFizz · 02/04/2023 12:39

I agree. Prices are not cheap and won’t be. However price does relate to seats available. More are available when bookings open. That doesn’t mean they are cheap! Just cheaper than when the plane is nearly full. I don’t use Jet2 so I don’t know. Day of the week usually matters too.

gogohmm · 02/04/2023 12:42

Supply and demand, basic economics. I've paid £22.79 each one way £35.20 each the other for my flights plus £32 each way for a checked bag (we'll share) but I'm not going peak time and booked 4 months ahead.

No we weren’t? That was 2021. Nearly everywhere was back open to tourists and most countries had even dropped testing by August 2022.

For me the last trip that was good value was December 2021. Since then every trip has been substantially more expensive than equivalent trips in 2019 and before.

We're people still cautious in summer 2022?
Most people I know went away last summer.
Plenty got away in 2021 ime,
Albeit with covid restrictions.
Some, us included, went away summer 2020 - albeit that was more tricky.

This is my experience too.

Went away in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Only 2021 trips required testing/proof of vaccine.

kitsuneghost · 02/04/2023 15:37

Surprised at people saying it's late to book for August.
We only decide where we are going about a month in advance.
