Has anyone been on holiday to Maderia? If so any Hotel recommendations?

Me and my partner are looking and trying to work out where to stay for June/July

DD and her DBF stayed here last year, said it was amazing. They had a fabulous holiday in Madeira. socalconature.com/

@Elephantlover3643 we stayed at Reids which was amazing although I think we slightly reduced the average age from infinity!! The hotel is beautiful but the clientele is definitely "old"

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 06/01/2023 23:28

I stayed at the Pestana Carlton a few years ago and it was lovely. Not too expensive considering the amazing location, right on the coast with a little enclosed area of the sea for snorkelling and a couple of lovely pools. It’s a bit of a trek into town (and hard work on the way back up!) but the easy access to the sea was a massive plus for us.

The Cliff Bay Hotel. Absolutely stunning location, great food, lovely pools, couldn’t ask for more. Spent a fabulous week there not so long ago, couldn’t recommend it enough!

Honkeydonkey · 06/01/2023 23:53

Castanheiro is lovely.
Enotel Magnolia.
Both fab, Castanheiro is more centrally located, but Magnolia certainly in walking distance to central and Lido areas of Funchal.

@Elephantlover3643 I just came on to ask something very similar so thank you for this post! Did you book something yet?

@YellowLemonshade the link you posted looked great, do you mind me asking how old your daughter is?

In a nutshell, I’m looking for a short break that would suit a solo travelling lady in her mid forties. Focus mainly on walking with a bit of health and well-being thrown in. I’ve never been to Madeira so I’ve no idea which localities would be best positioned and appreciate any suggestions!

chocolatenutcase · 08/01/2023 09:50

We stayed here

www.quintinhasaojoao.com/en/

It was beautiful. A boutique style hotel a bit apart from the main drag of huge hotels but same distance to the town. The food was amazing, staff attentive. We went with TUI but had a private transfer because there was no way a coach could get up the street it was on. I think it sounds just what you are looking for.

chocolatenutcase · 08/01/2023 09:54

@Stircrazyschoolmum I mixed up your post with OP. The 'just what you are looking for' comment was for you. There's a lady at the hotel -Rosie I think- who's job is to book you into local tours. She's British but has lived in Madeira for ever.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 08/01/2023 10:12

@chocolatenutcase thank you so much for such a speedy reply.. going to look it up now!!

DD is 25 - however not a party animal, wanted something quiet and scenic. They hired a car.

We always stay in Airbnbs in the old town. I like to pretend I live there 😁.

Thanks we were looking at the Carlton! It's at the upper end of our price range but it's either that or Magnolia, do you think Carltons worth the extra cost. How much does food/drink cost there, if you can remember?

In the Old Town rather than the hotel zone ... www.portobay.com/en/hotels/madeira-hotels/porto-santa-maria/ We had a wonderful stay there.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 09/01/2023 00:52

We didn’t really eat in the hotel. But there was a little cafe across the road that did the most amazing sandwiches!! So good we had them for lunch and then again for dinner one day BlushGrin

We also ate at Beef and Wines, another restaurant named after an author - Hemingway maybe?! And an amazing Indian restaurant where we also went twice! Other meals were when we were out and about on the island eg the sea water pools in the north - a must see.

doistayordoigo · 09/01/2023 08:08

We stayed at the Pestana Carlton in September, and had a lovely time. We went B&B and ate out every night. We had lunch a couple of times at the pool bar, and dinner at the attached restaurant once, and the attached pub on the first night. We also went to the Indian restaurant over the road which was nice. Other times we went into the old town or walked in the opposite direction. There are lots of places to eat whichever way you go, and we didn't have a bad meal all week. I can't remember how much the meals cost, but they weren't extortionate.

It's a reasonable walk down to the old town and back, but we managed it and we're not that fit! Sometimes we got a taxi back, which I think was about 8 euros, but there are also buses.

I would definitely stay at the Carlton again, however be aware that the Pestana group run their own owners club and you will probably get a card through your door inviting you for a free drink so they can invite you to a sales pitch. If you're not interested just ignore it. We went and it was interesting enough, but there was no hard sell.

I'd also request or book a room with either a sea or side view...we were on the side so has a view down to the old town and harbour straight ahead, sea to the right and the street to the left, which was nice. We were also on quite a high floor which reduced some of the street noise.

Madeira is lovely and we had a great time, it's the first holiday I've come back from feeling genuinely relaxed and like I'd been away for longer than a week.

Ooooh honestly it was fabulous! Can give lots of pub & restaurant recs too 😂

Faja dos Padres. It’s at the bottom of a cliff, by the sea, and you use a cable car to get up and down to it. fajadospadres.com/faja/

countdowntonap · 12/01/2023 18:05

@Honkeydonkey I would love to hear all of your recommendations. We’ve just booked to go in February which is last minute for me and I haven’t got the time to research the dining/drinks to the extent I’d usually like to. Sorry to jump on your thread @Elephantlover3643

Honkeydonkey · 12/01/2023 18:40

Oooh what do you want to know? Where are you staying?

Honkeydonkey · 12/01/2023 19:04

The Prince Albert Pub

Magic Tea House

Pico da Atalaia ll -fabulous pizzas. Google says it's permanently closed, but it was open a fortnight ago. It's beneath the cable car in the old town.

Barreirinha Bar Café just past the Forte

Cantinho dos Amigos- near the cathedral

Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular and I'll have a think. We've been a few times so I should be able to help.

You'll have to try the Bola da Caco, local garlic bread, and definitely a 'special sandwich '!

countdowntonap · 12/01/2023 19:07

Thank you! This will be my bedtime reading later @Honkeydonkey We’re staying at Next by Signature Savoy. It’s a special birthday for my DH whilst we’re there so will be looking to book somewhere special for that day.

Pearfacebanana · 12/01/2023 19:10

We stayed at the Girassol
Which is near the Lido but not seafront. Road was a bit noisy but big rooms. They do an all inclusive rate as well. Not flash but v good staff and good value.
I would like to try the Pestana Carlton if we went back.

Honkeydonkey · 12/01/2023 19:15

How lovely! That's very close to the Magnolia, where we just stayed and half of those places are right on your doorstep.
If you're there near shrove Tuesday then you'll see the carnival which I think is the Saturday before?

We hired a Smart Car from rent-a-car Madeira which is just along from the Savoy Palace, they were great.

Gawd I'm desperate to go back and I only came home 10 days ago 😂
