Where to go in January?

secrethedgehog · 14/08/2022 12:45

For logistical reasons can only go last week in January, for a week or 10 days
Looking for heat
Really nice food
Beach
Two adults
Like to be able to leave resort and explore a bit, happy to hire a car.
Not Mexico , bit dodgy at moment if not staying in resort.
Have done DR, Barbados, Jamaica,st Lucia , Seychelles,Tobago , Grenada ( prefer Tobago and Grenada),Thailand
Not Dubai
Please help, really need a holiday

Please just bob along if you want to moan about long haul flying, not interested and not justifying it

Thanks in advance

Maldives is amazing in January

We stayed at kuramathi and it was incredible

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/08/2022 12:51

It was amazing, we went in 2013 so could be different now. We did all inclusive and honestly it was worth every penny.

CloudPop · 14/08/2022 16:07

Cape Town. Long flight hit no jet lag. Stunning place, wonderful food, so many different things to see and do

CloudPop · 14/08/2022 16:08

But no jet lag, I meant.

Lakeowlmoon · 14/08/2022 16:09

In your shoes I would go back to Barbados. It's got everything imo.

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2022 20:19

South Afruca! Cape Town, Winelands and Garden route. We’ve also been to California at this time. No fires! Also Arizona and Utah work well in January. Tour of cities in the Deep South, USA. Florida Keys. Behamas. Madagascar. Go for somewhere a bit more interesting!

NewMoney1000000 · 14/08/2022 21:19

Cape Town
Mauritius
Virgin islands.
All great for getting out and about.

billycorn · 14/08/2022 21:48

Maldives is perfect in January but it’s very much a laid back affair. No sightseeing unless you scuba dive.

secrethedgehog · 14/08/2022 22:22

Thanks all
Am researching Cape Town now

@TizerorFizz have been to most of the USA destinations you mention but not Arizona or Utah, will have a look, hadn't crossed my mind as an option.
Have you been to Madagascar at that time of year, it's supposed to be cyclone season so had ruled it out, but maybe cyclone season isn't as scarey as it sounds !

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2022 22:26

Well it’s wet downpours then humid in Madagascar. Maybe not the best on reflection! South Africa is fine though. India would be too.

Germolenequeen · 14/08/2022 22:32

Not as exotic but I and 2 friends spent 28 /12 /2021 to 02/01/2022 in Lanzarote - it was lovely - very warm 😊

Germolenequeen · 14/08/2022 22:35

Actually 26/12 not 28/12 😅

XelaM · 14/08/2022 23:14

Australia/NZ are the obvious ones if you are looking for heat and like long flights

Why not Dubai? Dubai/Abu Dhabi are amazing in January.

Eilat in Israel is hot in January with gorgeous beaches. We celebrated New Years Eve there twice (many years ago) and it was hot beach weather.

A friend of mine loved Vietnam in January (I believe it's the best time of year to go - could be wrong?)

Myusername2015 · 14/08/2022 23:19

I’m living in the Bahamas at the moment; it can get a bad press but mostly that’s concerns over Nassau. One of the “family islands of the Bahamas” Exuma etc are absolutely idyllic; heaven on earth I think especially at that time of year.

daisydalrymple · 14/08/2022 23:20

Germolenequeen was it windy on lanzarote? I’m considering us going away after Christmas (new job, after 10 years in hospitality working each festive season!) and have been put off by lanzarote after going to fuerteventura and suffering the constant ‘breeze’ that they said lanzarote also gets??

Lakeowlmoon · 15/08/2022 12:53

I've been to Arizona in Jan. Was 20c in Phoenix/ Sedona so fantastic weather for hiking in the desert. Colder at the Grand Canyon which is higher up with a bit of snow and frost around. Was a great time of year to be in the desert - blue sky's and settled everyday whilst snow storms raged in the northern US.

weekendninja · 15/08/2022 14:22

I've been to Arizona in Jan. I was hoping for heat but we didn't have it. Neither did we when we drove over to Puerto Penasco in Mexico. It was not lounging in the sun weather but as the previous poster said its perfect for hiking and the surrounding national parks are just spectacular. There were clear blue skies that just didn't stop. In particular the Organ Pipe and Saguaro National Parks are just amazing.

As for food, I've yet to be impressed; it seems more in, eat and out without time for food, wine and conversation.

If you're still interested, my dream would be to star in an RV and travel around. It's a fantastic state to explore.

TizerorFizz · 15/08/2022 15:06

20 degrees in a sheltered sunny spot is just heaven with blue skies and clear air! The south rim of the Grand Canyon is open all year round and I agree that Sedona is fantastic in winter.

Germolenequeen · 15/08/2022 18:36

@daisydalrymple

Sorry only just caught up with this - nope not windy in the slightest - very warm around 28 most days - had been prev in April though (Easter break) & first day we were there wasn't very warm but after that fab too 😊

Ineedhelp1981 · 15/08/2022 18:42

Cape Verde is supposed to be absolutely lovely that time of the year.

Dominica in the Caribbean is absolutely scenic and picturesque and hot.

daisydalrymple · 15/08/2022 20:32

germolenequeen
ooh thanks. Might price it up then 🙏✈️🎅

Germolenequeen · 15/08/2022 22:11

daisydalrymple

Fab 😎 enjoy 😉

secrethedgehog · 16/08/2022 17:32

Thanks so much for all the tips and suggestions, think I have decided on Thailand.
Weather will be good, flight not too expensive.
Currently planning itinerary but think 2 nights in Bangkok then take sleeper train to Phuket.
3 nights there then travel to wildlife park for 3 nights in jungle.
3 nights in koh Samui then flight to Bangkok and flight home

Have filed several other places away though for future ideas !
