What the title says - like the look of Mauritius for a special birthday holiday but balk at t he 12 hour journey. We want top luxury, great food, golf and want to travel in summer next year.

We went to Mauritius first two weeks of August for the first time and the 12 hour flight is 100% worth it. Yes it was long but totally worth it. It is amazing, we had the best time. Sorry you might know this already but if you haven't been do not be put off by the flight.

VanCleefArpels · 17/09/2018 23:42

sleep thank you for the link, but this isn’t luxurious enough I’m afraid, however Cyprus might be worth researching a bit more

Virgo you echo everything our friends say about Mauritius, we’ve just got a bit sick of longhaul flights.. where did you stay?

Portugal, loads of golf courses, sea/beach, sunshine.

ektomarie · 17/09/2018 23:57

Try Amanzoe for top luxury. Romanos Resort, is Amanzoe is too pricey.

Virgo28 · 18/09/2018 00:06

Vancleef, we stayed at the Tamassa Resort down South in Bel Ombre. Absolutely amazing place.

VanCleefArpels · 18/09/2018 08:09

ektomarie Amanzoe looks amazing - absolutely the right vibe, but no golf 😧☹️

The advantage of Mauritius is that you can get a direct overnight flight and leave the airport late and arrive the next morning. There is minimal time difference (which is quite an issue if you are only going for a week),

It is lovely, but not especially warm in July/August as it is the middle of their winter. Lots of resorts don't heat their pools.

ihatethecold · 18/09/2018 08:53

how many hours is Sri Lanka?
Ive neer been but im wondering if they have luxurious resorts.

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 18/09/2018 08:53

Not quite like Mauritius, but ticks your other boxes is the Evian Resort on Lake Geneva. Fantastic golf course and spa in stunning surrounds. A week might be a bit long but one to bear in mind!

ihatethecold · 18/09/2018 08:55

Mexico is 11 hours straight through and has great wildlife. I loved it on the Yucatan peninsula

The Florida keys? We stayed at hawks kay in Duck key last year. it was amazing.

Caribbean? never bean but its closer than Mauritius

VanCleefArpels · 18/09/2018 09:54

madcats you are not selling it to me with overnight flights, the actual spawn of the devil 😉

ladypenelope yes have looked at Evian for short break, but not good enough guaranteed weather, beaches etc

ihatethecold Mexico no shorter travel time. Caribbean is obvious alternative but we’ve had a bad experience there which makes us reluctant. Maybe need to look at different islands, not sure about golf there either

Sardinia. Beautiful white sandy beaches. Some really nice resort hotels.

Then you’d love Romanos (and Westin costa Navarino) as it’s got a huge golf course. They also have private villas with pools, if you’ve the budget

MistressDeeCee · 18/09/2018 10:22

St Lucia? 7 1/2 hour flight, Creole culture/language so similar to Mauritius, beautiful scenery, tropical rainforest with activities if that's your thing Luxury hotels and golf courses. South of the island for peace and lushness (Soufriere), north if you want nightlife alongside beautiful beaches etc

GinaCarbonara · 18/09/2018 10:34

Albany in the Bahamas has an excellent golf course, part owned by several golf legends.

ginacarbonara the Bahamas - now we are talking! Although from the Albany website it looks like they vet enquirues to avoid the hoi polloi and at $2500 a Night stretches even my almost limitless budget 😉😂. However will now explore other Bahamas options.

mistressdeecee yes St Lucia would be a first thought, love to do the BodyHoliday but not for a blowout birthday, kind of defeats the object!

princessmargaret we’ve done Sardinia to death I’m afraid

Dubai?
You could always do a week there and a week in Mauritius after?

Barbados?

Or I've heard Kos is nice?

mothertominibeasts · 18/09/2018 14:39

I second a week in Dubai, then hop on the plane 4 hours to the Maldives.

You can fly to the Maldives direct in March, rest of the year it's indirect. And about 14-15 hours with the transfers. Not ideal but hasn't stopped me going every year Grin

KaliforniaDreamz · 18/09/2018 14:48

Dubai is horrible don't bother.
mauritius is a paradise island and you will get luxury for half the price of luxury in Europe.
BUT the flight not great. You can go via Dubai on Emerates - nicer airline than Air Mauritius and BA who go direct, but you're extending journey.
PM me if u want more info on this.

KaliforniaDreamz · 18/09/2018 14:49

Emirates*

ihatethecold · 18/09/2018 15:30

Tui fly direct to Mauritius on a Dreamliner.

RomaineCalm · 18/09/2018 15:45

A bit closer to home with golf?
