What the title says - like the look of Mauritius for a special birthday holiday but balk at t he 12 hour journey. We want top luxury, great food, golf and want to travel in summer next year.

Air mauritius is fine tho - depends on what age plane u get - ironically the older one is more comfy - much more space!

ihatethecold What's a Dreamliner?

ektomarie · 18/09/2018 16:02

I wouldn’t stop over in Dubai but in Oman for some serious luxury and amazing hotel that are seeped with indigenous references

top 10 luxury hotels in Oman article

ihatethecold · 18/09/2018 16:17

A Dreamliner is a huge plane that is very modern. They are supposed to help with jet lag. It was pleasant to fly economy compared to BA or VA

KaliforniaDreamz · 18/09/2018 16:21

Thank you ihatethecold

Hotel Sani in Greece. Stay in the child free part. Easy transfers and very lovely, it is very expensive so also pretty glamorous.
I've been to Mauritius and wasn't keen. The Caribbean is not good in August either. Hawaii is amazing but even further away!

VanCleefArpels · 18/09/2018 16:33

Dubai/Oman etc no good in summer (have been to both though and agree Oman is quite special) and we are tied to school hols and big exams so March /Easter is no go ☹️

It’s s sounding like Mauritius is really ticking all the boxes at the cost of the long flight....

What about going FIrst class?!

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 18/09/2018 16:39

I know you've said no to the Caribbean but was it Barbados? We went there for our honeymoon and my parents went to St Lucia for a wedding. I've also spoken to loads of people who've been to other islands. But everyone agrees Barbados is a step above the rest. Honestly it ticks all your boxes there's some amazing hotels. It's the only place I'd seriously consider buying a holiday home if I was to marry bill gates or similar 😂

Floofsquidge · 18/09/2018 17:04

The Azores

BigusBumus · 18/09/2018 17:10

The Seychelles are 10 hours direct.
Sri Lanka is 11 hours.
Turks & Caicos is 9 hours as is Barbados.

BigusBumus · 18/09/2018 17:12

I got married at The Shandrani, Mauritius. It was fabulous. Not as pricey as you'd imagine!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 18/09/2018 17:15

here's where we've stayed a couple times in Mauritius-
fantastic

and as it is in the Beachcomber Group I think you can also play golf at other hotels but the course here gorgeous!

VanCleefArpels · 18/09/2018 19:02

Giraffe it was Barbados where we had “The Worst Holiday Ever” (TM) 😂

Cape Verde islands? Apparently not much there except AI hotels though.

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 18/09/2018 21:04

Didn't sport the need for golf, so no good!

underneaththeash · 18/09/2018 21:22

Vancleef - I wouldn't bother with the Caribbean in the summer its too humid and there are too many flies.
If you like Mauritius just spend the money on business class flights....you get to the airport, speed through security, sit in lounge - drink fizz, get on the aeroplane first, drink more fizz, watch a film, eat a meal, drink more wine, go to sleep, eat breakfast and watch another film and you're there!
We got a decent deal on BA website hotel+flight last time we went (although personally, I find Mauritius very bland).

VanCleefArpels · 18/09/2018 21:28

underneaththeash I’m completely with you - we have a turn left if more than 8 hours rule for flights 😉

I don't know about golf
But the closest you'll get to a Maldives or Mauritius lux place without the flight is Zighy Bay in Oman

Absolute paradise on every level, and even a nearly-Maldives standard of reef for snorkelling

It's nearly Maldives prices though

Stopyourhavering64 · 18/09/2018 21:54

Seychelles are slightly closer and BA now do direct flights ( although we flew Emirates as prefer the A380 Business class)
We stayed at Constance Lemuria on Praslin ( has a golf course!) and is total luxury

Hersetta427 · 18/09/2018 22:03

Cape Verde - all year round 30 degrees and flying time of 5.5 hrs.

Golde · 28/09/2018 22:06

Cape Verde wouldn't be my choice.

The Anassa in Cyprus used to be lovely, and Aphrodite hills but that was a couple of years ago now.
