Where to fly cheaply long haul

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 02/04/2018 13:11

We want to take the kids outside Europe this summer. Which destinations are relatively cheap to fly to? There’s 6 of us so flight costs add up. We don’t want Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey or Morocco. Any idea where might be affordable?

Lebanon?
Israel?

notacooldad · 02/04/2018 13:16

This report was published in February.
It may give you some ideas!

I forgot to pate it!

TheVanguardSix · 02/04/2018 13:17

Israel is expensive though.
Lebanon can be as well, but I'd recommend it over Israel.

Not Kas in Turkey? I know you said no to Turkey but Kas is beautiful.
How 'long haul' do you want to travel?

notacooldad · 02/04/2018 13:38

Don't be put off by my likn's title with the word Ibiza and Europe in. The article is about long haul being good value at the moment.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 02/04/2018 13:39

I don’t mind how far, but DH would like a change from Europe. I’d love Lebanon but anywhere with recent wars/ terror connections are out of bounds as far as DH is concerned!

I can’t follow the link, but I’ll try to google the article, thanks!

If you’re looking for a resort type holiday then the Dominican Republic is usually quite reasonable.

notacooldad · 02/04/2018 13:43

Ok . It's a an artillery from the Guardian suggesting places that are currently better value than places in Spain.
Abu Dubai and Dubai are very popular at the moment with my friends who have children and they seem to have picked some good deals up.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 02/04/2018 14:17

Cuba was great value

We're currently in Canada and 4 return flights cost £1346. C$ is low too so better value now

pannikin · 02/04/2018 14:18

You can get some great deals to the Caribbean. Look on icelolly or on the beach.

MoveOnTheCards · 02/04/2018 14:49

Check out South Africa, really good value when you’re there and so many great experiences to be had.

TheVanguardSix · 02/04/2018 15:20

Thailand
It's far but it's fabulous.

TheVanguardSix · 02/04/2018 15:22

I would say South Africa too but remember, our summer is their winter. You don't want a rainy holiday.

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2018 15:52

Rain would be welcome in South Africa. There are severe water shortages.

I think you have to distinguish between all inclusive holidays where you stay in a compound style hotel and genuinely cheap flights. Often the long haul packages are cheaper because they use airlines like Thomas Cook and Thompson. So not scheduled. You have to decide if you want to actually see a country or just your hotel. Some countries tend to be favoured by the all inclusive market and there’s always Florida!

Have a play on Skyscanner

Gottokondo · 02/04/2018 16:15

Cabo verde is quite cheap. What kind of holidays do you like? Beach? City trips? Visiting old stuff? Artsy? Cultural?

Reallycantbebothered · 02/04/2018 16:35

Thailand..fabulous country to visit, great culture and scenery .and cheap to eat out when you get there too

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 02/04/2018 17:12

Definitely want to see the country rather than just the hotel compound, and to be somewhere with a different culture ( eg not USA, not a tourist only type resort). We’d like a bit of sun, good countryside, some activities, not so much city/ museums/ galleries.

Borneo is amazing. So much to see. We went white water rafting, jungle trekking, orangutan watching, beach chill, spa, venturing to local markets, top restaurants. All sorts. Got a great deal on Travelzoo with Kuoni.

TravellingFleet · 02/04/2018 17:37

South Africa is very good value when you’re there

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 02/04/2018 18:59

Borneo sounds amazing. Are flights cheapish though?

We snapped up 9 night Shangri La hotel stay including flights for £800 per person. Travelzoo have done this deal the last few years so deffo keep checking the site.

ShanghaiDiva · 03/04/2018 00:03

In live in Asia, so mot sure how expensive flights are from the UK, but Vietnam is a great destination - excellent value hotels and food is delicious and inepensive. Check the visa stuation, currently no visa required for UK citizens, but that is until end of June so you will need to check this has been extended.
The travel fish website is great for info on SE Asia,. For internal flights viet jet is good value as is air Asia.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/04/2018 20:15

Vietnam without a doubt.
