Naturist beach? Would you?

We've booked to go to the south of France (Adge) at the end of July, my hubbie says there's a naturist beach nearby and is egging me to go (perving as usual! :-)) I'm not a shy person but I'm really not sure, and there's also our daughter to think about.

Anyone taken the plunge before? I'm really undecided, I'm not sure it's for me.

She's ten now. I'm trying not to make a big deal at all, but honesty I really have no sense as to how to approach the subject. I'd prefer it to be as natural as possible.

God Blu, I hadn't thought of that. Little devil, she would too if she got the chance

I'll send her my text number. You could appear in the MN 'parenting news'....

JustMum · 11/06/2004 17:36

She might need a wide angle lens. I'm a bit 'generous' around the waist and hips at present. You wouldn't want to see that picture as you're eating your brekkie.

She of course hasn't an inch of fat. Not fair

And you know what? Most of the women on the beach will be EXACTLY like you!

JustMum · 11/06/2004 17:45

Well that's a relief at least. I might give it a shot then. Do you bring your kids too now? I just hate the thought of my DD being shy or embarrased.

We've been on them as a family too, in Brittany (Kerouriec/Kerhallon near Carnac). To be honest we stumbled on them (yeah, yeah I hear you say) but wanted to stay on the beach as it was the cleanest and wasn't crowded. A lot of the French that were on it seemed to be over 55 and had developed that 'don't give a damn' attitude which I really admired! It was fantastic to air your nether regions! and I agree that no strap marks was great. I'm not too sure what I'd do if it was really busy but if it's quiet I'd do it again no probs. We're going away with family this year and am debating whether to go even topless with my 11 year old nephew about!!

deegward · 11/06/2004 18:23

we went on these type of hols all the time when I was young. The whole shopping etc, most of the time in this country but a couple of times abroad. My only hangups were not being able to show holiday photos, and now as an adult still can't.

Find it a bit weird now, and wouldn't do it with my children, but don't feel it affected me in any way. note of caution, lots of cream on bums as they do burn! used to burn mine as a child sitting down on things - adult naturists carry a towel around to sit on. Enjoy and do it if you want to

codswallop · 11/06/2004 18:26

friend of mine is involved in a long custody battle with her ex h who want s to take their 6 year old to nudist camps.

she is against as there have been instances of stripping at school when he got in a pickle changing for Pe.

she is also anxiouis about wht sort of people ar ethere watching a child.

ican s ee what she means really

motherinferior · 11/06/2004 19:17

I persuaded DP to join me in stripping off on a Spanish beach (laidback Germans were already cheerily nuddified, natch) when six months pregnant!

JustMum · 11/06/2004 19:30

I guess I wouldn't mind as much if my DD was 4 or 5, she's 10 now.

Deegward, why wouldn't you do it now with your kids?

Poppyseed, how old were yours when they 'started'?

Shame really it's such an issue in the UK. Makes me feel like a right old nun!

aloha · 11/06/2004 19:43

Eeuw, how repulsive. Lots of naked Germans. I'd never do it in a million years. The horror!

motherinferior · 11/06/2004 19:44

Oh Aloha, and I was going to suggest we did a nice trip out to the seaside with the kids

aloha · 11/06/2004 19:49

OOps just seen you are all typing while naked.
Still would rather stick pins in my eyes. And at ten would much rather have died.
I really, really, really don't want to see strange old men's walnut whip-like willies.

aloha · 11/06/2004 19:51

God, Blu, where in Norfolk??? We're going there this summer. As long as it isn't Brancaster or Holkham I'll be happy!

Justmum - DD was 3ish, and is now 5 and DS wasn't even made then! Have to say I wouldn't do it now with DD as she's not stupid!! Have concerns about not so much what she would see (as she sees it all at home in a perfectly normal way) but perhaps what naked perverts were looking at DD too?! Am I over-reacting do you think?!!! By the way, we only did the beach thing not the full nudist experience with shopping and stuff! Never been into that really, don't see the point.

codswallop · 11/06/2004 20:49

I dont mind htem seeing m,e naked - or me seeing htem naked - not walnuts tho

lol

JustMum · 12/06/2004 13:18

Well I finally bit the bullet and raised the topic with my DD this morning. I took out the France holiday brochure we had used because I know she likes to read it. We looked at different resorts and at their lovely beaches, and we talked about how nice it is to lie in the sun and get a tan. So I said ?do you know, there are some beaches where you can get a tan all over because you don?t have to wear a cozzie?. She had a fit of giggles of course (I did too ) but she asked loads of questions.

I guess in some ways I?m like poppyseed, I worry about weirdos looking at us (and especially my DD), or even taking photos and such like. All this is so far away from my boring suburban life in Twickenham!

I'm going to talk to my DH about it tonight. I'm a lot less worried now, and thanks to everyone for their comments. Seems I have more hang-ups than the rest of my family!

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 12/06/2004 14:08

You could give it a go, but I can't imagine a situation i'd find more uncomfortable (but then I have MAJORRRRRRRRRRR body hang ups). My naked body is the very last thing I would choose to inflict on others, not to mention vice-versa.

JustMum · 12/06/2004 14:15

I know the feeling, that's pretty much where I'm coming from. Althopugh it seems that most people on the beach are of the older and larger variety, I can't help feeling that I would still be aware of my own 'proportions'.

oxocube · 12/06/2004 14:15

Only after major surgery!!

JustMum · 12/06/2004 14:19

Dare I ask on which part??
