Yes, a mono-glot Surrey wife, a VN boy, a VN girl and a bemused looking 19yo babysitter (I guess she'll tag along with us) shouldn't be too difficult to spot.

AvaLou · 04/09/2006 17:17

Surely a giant fish floating around paris won't be hard to miss?

annh · 04/09/2006 17:23

You two are cracking me up! Was thinking about taking ds1, also 8, to Paris as a treat in a couple of weeks, think I'll wait until you get back Cod and you can just give me the low-down!

Issymum · 04/09/2006 17:50

Aaaaagh! Paris is cancelled. Our whacky Canadian friends emailed me last night to say that they had invited too many friends to Paris, they had all accepted at the last minute and that now English friend, plus his friends, plus US friend, plus two Canadian friends plus two extraneous relatives will all be there '....huddling around the Eiffel Tower looking to us for guidance. So, cruel to be kind, stay away....'

It does sound rather grim and they have invited us for Christmas in Provence instead, so no hard feelings I guess.

Yet another of life's examples where procrastination and inefficiency i.e. my complete failure to book a hotel or the train, turns out to be a strategic masterstroke.

DD1 will be disappointed but I suspect she'd happily swap all the culture and sophistication that Paris has to offer for a damp trip to Legoland.

Groan .......

Oh, and I won't get to see a two-legged, two-finned cod scaling the Arc de Triomphe.

coderoo · 04/09/2006 17:55

oh i htnk thats honest of them
and provence soudsn great

Does ds know that if you drop a polo from the top of the eiffel tower you can kill someone?
does ds want to borrwo ds's beret. According to the paper hats for men are essential this autumn
I read in some paper about an ipod tour of Paris you can download and then wander around sounding v knowledgeable about it all
Will you be taking the CITY shorts then Cod?

Skribble · 04/09/2006 21:18

Been to Paris with DS when he was 8yrs (+DD 5 at the time),

He loved the Eiffel tower, he liked going up in the lift because it was a bit scary. He hasn't been on the river tour but when I went with DH he fell asleep, I didn't rate it much either as you are quite low in the river so no veiw isn't that great, bus tour would give a better view perhaps. We got the Visite Pass for the Metro and jumped on and off that all day. It can be bought at most Metro stations, just point to the day and zone combination that you want on display at the kiosk if your french is a bit rusty.

He also recomends the big science centre Cite , it has the submarine The Argonaute to explore, The Geode imax cinema, a Plantatrium, a small aquarium plus loads more, it also has Cite des Enfant which has two areas for over and under 5's full of interactive exhibits that you and your children go round together. There are different tickets that include all or some of these different areas.

He wanted to pass on his eating place recomendations which are Flunch (fast food French style, well more self service as they don't do burgers) and Hippopotumas ( another chain that seems to specialise in steaks and fries).

Where are the catacombes??? We tried to find them, is it the same as the sewers?

coderoo · 04/09/2006 21:19

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 22:38

We were in Paris for Easter.

la Cite is good, they were doing Star Wars when we were there, there are billions of things to do there.

Defense is on the western edge isn't it? We normally stay east, our friends are in the 20e.

There's a great Alice in Wonderland themed shambolic cafe in le Marais. I like walking everywhere. And there's a nice playground in the south somewhere. Oh, we spent some time in the zoo next to the bridge our boat was at. Ah, yes, the Jardin des Plantes zoo. Small and pathetic, but a good collection of poisonous frogs.

Oh, their museum of natural history was doing some good stuff on evolution, I think. here . We didn't go, DS1 too young to really enjoy it.

coderoo · 05/09/2006 11:00

ta ill take a look at that

cupcakes · 05/09/2006 11:13

This trip sounds fab. I love going out and doing things with ds on our own. We always have a lovely time. No fighting or bickering or clamouring for attention.
He'll remember this forever.
