The catacombes are surprisingly not scary at all , it's amazing though.
The pompidou is fab too, especially if you include walking around the whole of the outside, and maybe sandwiches in the square in front of it where there's all sorts of entertainers, a bit like covent garden, but french. lol.

ocd · 01/09/2006 19:59

euro disney is just up the road.......

hehehehehehe

AvaLou · 01/09/2006 20:03

The louvre is not worth it, theres huge crowds around anything you'd want to see and the rest would be dull for young boy.
Take him for a walk along the riverbank, where all the stalls are pitched, buy crepes from a reputable looking stall, and definitly do the eiffel tower, it is amazing.
The sacre cour is better but a bit of a trek and close to the red light district.

AvaLou · 01/09/2006 20:10

I know it was a joke, but disney land, I'd rather chew off my arm than go there again.
We ended up there for a day on a holiday in france when I was younger, my friends thought it would be fun.
With hangovers, the piped 'happy ' music on a loop, grinning costumes when you know the person inside is sweating and probably depressed, hour long queues for anything that look vaguely fun , and striclty limited to one alcoholic drink per person all day at the bar we soon left.
I'm not sure it would be much better sober and with the kids.

ocd · 01/09/2006 20:13

"pissed in dlp the new expereince" arf

Does anyone else find it incredible that Parisian mcdonalds sell beer, you can get it as part of a 'meal deal' and they serve it in the normal cups, straws and all!?
It wasn't good when my friends found that out as they were forever on the hunt for the damn places.

AvaLou · 01/09/2006 20:20

Oooooh ooh and spotting cars without a bump, huge indent, or broken headlight etc could be a fun car game?

Thomcat · 01/09/2006 20:21

Just wanted to say - "how lovely".

we went for a fab walk round Montmartre

it was out of a book

mind you maybe explaining the Moulin Rouge to an 8-yr-old would be a bad idea...

Oh yes, MonteMarte without kids is fabulous, we once drank beer out of huge litre bottles on a park bench, wandered around the streets, bought some pastries, then went to the 'sex museum' where we got to see a 1700's dildo chair.
thems were the days..
With kids it'd be hard to explain when a transvestite prostitute follows you up the road...

Clary · 01/09/2006 20:37

roisin is right about the beaubourg (as posh parisian types call the pompidou for some reason) - escalator is fab and building generally.

Second the Musee D'Orsay, I think it's fab. Ooh I love Paris. How about some of the great bus routes - if you buy a travelcard thingy you can ride where you like and get a great tour of the city.

Also a Bateaux Mouche ride is good.

sunnydelight · 03/09/2006 20:17

There's an age restriction for the sewers trip but I can't remember what it is - might be worth checking beforehand to save a wasted journey if you fancied it. Personally I wouldn't bother with the expensive "bateaux mouches" - you can buy a day pass for the river bus which goes past a lot of the major sights and hop on and off all day. You miss the irritating commentary and it's a much more pleasant way to travel round Paris with a child than the metro. The playground beside Les Halles is amazing and your DS is just the right age to appreciate it, but it's kids only (you pay a couple of euro and sign kids in for an hour - no adults allowed) so it might be a bit intimidating for your DS on his own. Most of the staff seem to speak good English though, and they are lovely with the kids. Have fun!

ocd · 03/09/2006 20:18

oh ta for that sd - yes i htink hed be bored in a pklaygorund a lone wihtout his brohters
ok no bateau mouche
will rever bus instead - is it easy to psot

Thanks Cod - I was just going to start this thread myself as DD1 and I are also going to Paris in two weeks time to catch up with some Canadian friends who will be over there. Note to self: must get act together and book Eurostar and hotel. Will look out for a fish-woman with a continent labrador-boy in tow.

ocd · 03/09/2006 20:28

I'm really dopey at the moment but yes, if it's around the weekend of 16/17 September. I think we'll leave on Saturday and return on Tuesday. All four of us were going to go but DH has to be in the office that week. We're meeting up with the Canadian family who adopted their son at the same time as and from the same small Vietnamese town as DD1. We've kept in touch and had holidays together ever since. Each family holds a crucial piece of history for the other's child. The Canadians are fab, if full on and adherents of very un-Cod-like views about engaging a full-time baby-sitter whilst on holiday and buggering off for long lunches, afternoons of shopping and even longer dinners without their son. Not an approach I'll be pursuing with DD1.

ocd · 03/09/2006 20:36

If you fancy a coffeeeee in Paris, CAT me. It will probably have to be a quick one as I suspect that an 8 yo dog-boy and a 5 yo princess-girl will find each other mutually repellant !
