i would go for a secong hand game boy to start with...from ebay, maybe a gameboy advance....and if he enjoys then go for a DS (by nitendo and gameboy like, but better). all mine have gameboy and DD2 has a DS. the advance is best for the smaller ones......DD2 is 10 and lurves her DS tho!

HTH

psychomum5 · 29/07/2006 13:53

actually......just read your OP properly....

sorry. recommended game boy when you (not so clearly!), stated otherwise!!!

I don't know what other types you are wanting/meaning tho.

FWIW tho....friends kiddies all have gameboys/DS/PSP's too which helps for swapping games/tips etc.

do any of his friends have any hand held games? if so, go for the same type for swapping reasons etc. and so they can help him work out how to play it!

What age?

Leapster? DD1 (6) loves hers and it's vaguely educational!

psychomum5 · 29/07/2006 13:58

malory...... she's put it in travel... thinking she wants it for the car - water pistol not fun!

My ds (5) has a leapster max thing. Great as a handheld but also plugs into the tv. Very good he really likes it and some of the thomas the tank and incredibles games are quite educationable but fun too.

Will try and sort a link for you. I bought my ds's one from Early Learning, it and the games were all half price.

Whatever you do though get either the protective case or the rucksack to keep it in, or you'll never know where all the cartridges are in the car!

this is what ds has, it's great

All the extras are on the leapster page too.

Although it says sold out my local elc had quite a few in the sale a couple of weeks ago.

roisin · 29/07/2006 14:23

I've no idea - I don't understand this world at all, but thought I'd post anyway.

DS1 (just 9) has a GBA, which he saved up for and bought himself, when he was 7.5 I think. The games on it are really boring IMO, but ds1 likes it.

DS2 has just started playing on it occasionally.

Gillian76 · 29/07/2006 14:26

My DD has the thing neena linked to. Got it from ebay new for a fraction of the price, though.

psychomum5 · 29/07/2006 23:52

OP posts:
Miaou · 30/07/2006 08:18

Well I looked at the link and in my totally unknowledgable state I would say you couldn't really go wrong at that price, it's worth a go.

I take it he doesn't get travel sick?

ocd · 30/07/2006 12:37

no its for beign on hol too

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 30/07/2006 12:42

do you realise they are keyring size??

Not wanting to say no as they seem a good price and all, but that small would mean squinting I would think, so may not be that suitable after all, especially if played in the car!!

foxinsocks · 30/07/2006 12:43

just get him a gameboy you old fish

bubblerock · 30/07/2006 12:53

This looks good!

The new GamesPower 50 is an 8Bit gaming device with a 2.5-inch colour TFT screen that offers 50 games to ensure retro gamers get their gaming fix on the move.

At home your gaming fun can be enhanced as GamesPower 50 can be connected to a TV for full-screen game play via a standard TV-out cable.

The gaming controls allow for fast and accurate game play including directional pad (up/down/left/right), turbo button, and two action buttons for shooting, firing, and jumping - dependent on the game.

The range of retro games on GamesPower 50 include driving, archery, racing, darts, pool, warfare and quiz challenges.

GamesPower 50 is available in two colours, either red or blue, and is powered by three AAA batteries (which are included). It has a built-in speaker and 3.5mm headphone socket to allow for headphones and/or a connection to speakers. To help save the battery life there is an Auto Power Off mode.
