Who else has Teens starting to trawl the Uni's for 2009 entry?

Can't believe the pile of leaflets etc coming home from school.

Scary looking at accomodation costs (unloess you pick Teeside at £30pw!)

DD was rather struck by Oxford this week....

She is really interested in Exeter though - anyone been there?

One more year and they will have left home

wow milliways! i did no know that they still did these! fabulous

soz not read who;le thread - what has she decided to read?

Milliways · 15/12/2008 22:43

Modern Foreign Languages (French & German). Advantage of Southampton is they can do 3 languages - so she can do say Spanish as well.

Cambridge don't allow a third - say too much to get to total fluency which is the aim.

They phoned her earlier so that she didn't think it was a mistake when it arrived. Apparently they offer about 6 a year at this level.

gosh! she must be delighted - did she have great as/gcse results

Milliways · 15/12/2008 22:54

Yes! She had 11 A GCSE's (with A in all modules & coursework) and 5 grade A AS levels, predicted 4 Grade A A2s [proud Mum thingy]

OP posts:
Milliways · 15/12/2008 22:54

But she "failed" the 11+ !

OP posts:
RustyBear · 15/12/2008 22:58

Does make you a bit about K's entrance exam doesn't it?

NotanOtter · 15/12/2008 23:00

the thing about 11+ is it's learned

those tests are not about innate ability any more than they are about iq

they are about learning a technique

milliways is dd stressing about cambs?

Milliways · 15/12/2008 23:01

Yes, but that's another story Rusty (or are we just Grumpy old Women?)

OP posts:
Milliways · 15/12/2008 23:02

She was before the tests/interviews. Now that is over she can only wait & see. This has made her a lot happier as was 2nd choice anyway.

Milliways · 16/12/2008 18:26

Hope all the others start getting good offers soon!

OP posts:
Milliways · 04/01/2009 22:09

MissAnthrope · 10/01/2009 16:23

Congratulations to your dd Milliways

Divawithattitude · 20/01/2009 13:12

My ds started a Modern Foreign Langs Degree
last term, didn't like Oxbridge (turned down a place at Merton) because of the high % of literature studied on the course, he is much more interested in actually speaking the language and the linguistic side, Southampton's course is very highly rated and as you say you can do 3 languages, encourage your dd to look at the course content in depth before making her decision.

Milliways · 21/01/2009 19:06

Thank you. She had already decided Oxford wasn't for her, but she really likes the Cambridge course (includes Linguistics which she also wants to do). Theat will be her No.1 choice, it is just deciding on her insurance that is left to do.

Anyone else got their offers yet? Now UCAS deadline passed most have got some offers.

OP posts:
Divawithattitude · 21/01/2009 22:46

Southampton and Nottingham seem to be popular for Modern European Langs, he rejected Bristol because its full of Oxbridge rejects!! Also UCL was up there in the top ten.

What were her other offfers?

Milliways · 22/01/2009 16:51

Unconditional (well EEE which she already has with AS's) from Southampton

BBB Warwick
AAB Bath
awaiting to hear from Durham.

OP posts:
Divawithattitude · 24/01/2009 17:13

Bath is also up there in the top 10 - I hear its a very good course - friend of ds is there who is another one who turned down an Oxford place.

PlainOldPeachy · 24/01/2009 17:19

dh had to potpone application- let down by two rferees (boss on basis they dont want him leaving, linked profession mate on basis he doesn't think he can withstand the not-going-to-happen competition as we actually won't be going into same field)

DH very saddened but signing up for college so he can have academic reference next year.

Bugger is Uni had said he'd get a place as well.

mumof3teens · 23/02/2009 10:28

Yay - DS2 has 2 offers for Dentistry!

Milliways · 25/02/2009 20:19

Well done to your DD! Dentistry is sooo tough!

Where does she want to go?

DD has still not heard from Durham. Has decided she wouldn't choose them anyway now but still wants to say she has had 5 offers

OP posts:
PillicockSatOnPillicockHill · 25/02/2009 20:21

mumof3teens!! wooohooo

is it AAA?

mumof3teens · 26/02/2009 21:16

Thanks! His offers are from Cardiff and Leeds - Leeds had 1380 applicants for 75 places this year apparently! Still waiting to hear from 3rd uni after interview and one more interview next month. He really needs to think about which one for firm now. All offers are AAB - As in Chem & Biol. I know Durham are notoriously late at handing out offers Milliways.

Milliways · 27/02/2009 20:39

My cousin went to Leeds and says it is a fab uni town - so much going on.
