Hi. Me again.

OP posts:
Peanuts79 · 17/09/2026 11:49

Just catching up on last few posts - good luck to everyone heading off this weekend, YP and parents. Excited to hear how they all get on and the varying experiences of the same course.

We have news, never in a million years did I think this would happen or even could happen... But DD heard from Exeter yesterday and has had her offer reinstated!! So subject to DBS/ occupational health etc she holds an unconditional offer to start medicine Sept 2027 after her application has been reviewed!

Beyond thrilled as Exeter was, and always has been, her dream Uni. So we will cancel next weeks UCAT and crack on with gap-yearing!

Hoping for future years, may help show that things can change and be reconsidered even at what feels like the 11th hour.

inae · 17/09/2026 12:37

Oh wow @Peanuts79 that is fabulous news! So glad for you and your DD! She doesn't have to take the dreadful test again and has a place at her first choice uni. Well done!

PurryGrowls · 17/09/2026 23:20

Wow @Peanuts79 What brilliant news! So pleased for you and your daughter. ☺️

bluefineliner · 18/09/2026 06:54

Ah @Peanuts79 that is amazing news!! no more ucat either! Yes please remind us what happened initially it seems late for them to reinstate offers but what a relief your DD has her top choice now. Gap year will be so chilled now.

We are dropping DD off today so just having a few minutes peace before she wakes up and the car loading starts. She keeps asking me if I will cry when I leave her, I can't tell her I well up just thinking about it already. I have tried not to actually think about leaving her and concentrating on the practical moving. I am not going to wear any mascara today in preparation 😂.

Aw hope the drop off goes well. I think the way I’m dealing with it is planning forward little trips or the anticipation of little trips to see him or to meet up with other people (to break up the weeks!). We had also booked in some sort of sports thing they’ve bought tickets to so there’s that in mid October if we don’t get to see him before.

all this helps! Happy Friday everyone!

I was worried about this (dropped off today) but I'm fact was so glad the moving of stuff was over I couldn't wait to get out of there (and to lunch in the pub) 😁

Well done with the drop off. After all the stress of their final year at home, dropping them off is quite an anticlimax for parents.

bluefineliner · 19/09/2026 07:24

Morning,

Well the drop off went very smoothly yesterday, Newcastle seem to have the system down to a fine art, unloaded the car into big trolleys with two very helpful men, they took DD and I, plus the (4!) loads up to her flat whilst DH parked nearby. All in around 10 mins from parking up we were in her flat ready to start unpacking.

There were no flatmates around to start with but they appeared as we unpacked and were all very friendly and welcoming. Room very clean, lots of storage and a nice sized ensuite so DD happy. We had vaguely planned taking DD out for tea but she wanted to stay with her new flatmates as they were planning on a night out and she didn't want to miss out on any of it (which we preferred for her too). Took her for a few fresh bits of food then left her to make pasta for tea. Not heard anything since and haven't contacted her either so hopefully her first night has gone well. She has a lot of introductory lectures next week, most starting at 9am so will have to work out balancing freshers activities with this.

It was sad leaving her but not as bad I had expected because she was just so excited to meet everyone else and begin her new chapter. Our house is now very calm and quiet but very messy so my weekend will be pottering and tidying whilst reflecting on how much DD has achieved and how proud I am of her ❤.

Good luck to all your YP settling in or moving in.

PurryGrowls · 19/09/2026 09:13

Aw glad it went well @bluefineliner Sounds like a great start and hope your weekend is nice and productive in your calm house!

inae · 20/09/2026 13:59

@bluefineliner your drop off sounds very much like ours.

Very well organised and DD is happy with her room and the flatmates she met. We helped take everything to her room, assembled a storage trolley (IKEA Raskog anyone? 😀), chatted a bit with the other parents, dashed to the supermarket, then had a quick meal together at the students bar, and straight back home after that. It was all very emotional but I managed not to cry.

DD went out with some of her new flatmates last night and apparently they're a great bunch. Welcome week will be crazy :)

Have a great welcome week everyone who is starting this week xx

PurryGrowls · 27/09/2026 23:14

Dropped off my daughter in Lancaster yesterday … all the emotions, it’s a long way from home in the south-east!

She seems to have a lovely bunch in her flat - they all went out together last night. So glad she’s finding friends already but we’re really going to miss her!!

Hope everyone’s getting on ok and adapting!

bluefineliner · 28/09/2026 06:59

@PurryGrowls glad the drop off went well and you are ok too. I really liked Lancaster when we visited, the medical school was so bright and airy with great views! Hope your DD has a fab 5 years there.

So we are a week in now and DD has been busy going out (too much, had an awful cold), shopping, did some laundry and even talking about batch cooking! She has made a friend who is very organised and does this so it is inspiring her. I feel it may not last but she is embracing this independent living for now. She did say she was already fed up of thinking of what to cook and using up food before it goes out of date, not sure how she'll feel about this when she's had to do it for decades but I will keep quiet about that 😂.

She starts proper lectures today which she is glad about as she gave up on freshers a couple of days ago and has stayed in more. She had mandatory learning to do over the weekend and some reading so she is getting back into her learning finally which she is happy about.

I am looking forward to this week's updates on how things are going as she learns more. She didn't ring us for a day or so after dropping off (which is unlike her) but now calls one of us whilst she is doing something boring, like washing up or getting ready and talks us through everything that has happened recently. It is really helping me with not missing her too much so I hope it continues.

How is everyone else getting on and your YP?

MyGreyBiscuit · 28/09/2026 08:43

Morning all! DS has been doing his laundry - even washed his bedsheets...! I'm super impressed. Like you @bluefineliner I'm not sure how long the cooking/cleaning will continue or with enthusiasm. Already last week, he said 'I've got to finish half a loaf of bread!!!'. And obviously he doesn't have a load of condiments to make chicken taste better, so... I hope he will get more sauces.

He rang me at 11pm last night and I nearly freaked out. Thankfully, I had disabled my 'sleep mode' for 3 phone numbers (DS, DD and DH) so it came through. Turns out he was applying for his student bank account (!?!) and needed to know when we'd moved into our house. FFS. 😅

PurryGrowls · 28/09/2026 20:48

@bluefineliner My daughter could use a super-organised friend, this is not her strong point! She’s slightly chaotic when it comes to domestic chores, just hoping she gets influenced by some tidy / organised types!

Hope your daughter enjoys her first week of proper study!

And @MyGreyBiscuit Your son! My younger daughter is like this, no concept of waiting till morning! 😫

Sachetaandb · 28/09/2026 22:45

I remember my DC asking me this - I pointed out they had lived here all their life so how old were they?

MyGreyBiscuit · 29/09/2026 06:54

Well to be fair to him, he didn’t want to get the dates wrong - he did ring to confirm (we moved house when he was nearly 4). But yes there is that element of timing!
