Hi. Me again.

OP posts:
MyGreyBiscuit · 13/09/2026 21:28

Haha @inae - thanks for the compliments. He’s been roaming around his area today. I wonder if he’ll hit 20k steps!! (And whether he’s bought some supplies for breakfast as least!).

I hope he rings tonight again. He’s out with his flatmates apparently. He’s not a big chatter but it’ll be good just to hear his voice for the cat to hear him! Cat is indeed confused as to why the rest of us are here but he isn’t!! (She sleeps in his room!).

DD has been in Sunderland a week and has been loving it so far, we've had photos of her in her scrubs and she's been in the anatomy labs. She's already organised a night out for the first year! We only live 45 minutes away so are going to see her on Saturday (she had originally said longer but when I suggested we have a day out together she was quite keen). She's got a reading week at half term so is coming home for that as well which will be lovely. It's so interesting seeing how she's getting on, I was dreading it before she's left but it's not been as vad as I anticipated, I've still got 2 at home though.

Wow they’ve started school already?! I thought it’s still freshers week or something. I’m not sure he’s even unpacked after we left (and I’d made his bed..)!

Freshers week normally includes a number of university sessions too - like inductions sessions. I know my dc missed a few daytime freshers events because of these.

Yes I know freshers week includes induction sessions. Just curious that the poster stated anatomy lesson. Or maybe I misread. Not an issue. Just curious.

FruAashild · 14/09/2026 06:17

Yeah, it's been really quick after getting A level results! The medics have had induction sessions all week plus nights out. They had a tour of the 'wet labs'(didn't see the cadavers but I think they see them as quickly as possible because people build it up to be a big thing) and spent some time on the anatomage and did ultrasound on a pot of jelly with pasta in it. The rest of the freshers just arrived this weekend and it's normal fresher's week this week so this week will be busy.

Sachetaandb · 14/09/2026 07:43

Back in my day (not a medic) I remember freshers week involved a lot of queueing to register with the university, pick up timetables, get a student card, etc. Now of course all done in seconds online.

FruAashild · 14/09/2026 10:20

Yeah, so much of what she's done has been online before she even got there. Even getting her maintenance loan was electronic whereas I remember going to the bursars office once a term to get my grant cheque

MyGreyBiscuit · 14/09/2026 11:22

He's off to his first lecture/induction session at noon! Then, more clubs and societies??! Tutorial meet ups? He did ring yesterday night as well (I'm so pleased he's accommodating his mother's neediness) - turns out he thought he'd get out of his bubble of meeting med school buddies and wandered off to the 'main' campus ... and somehow met up with MORE med school buddies. LOL!

inae · 16/09/2026 11:08

@MyGreyBiscuit They will likely live in a medical school buddies bubble for the next 5 years. I saw DD's timetable from week 2 onwards and panicked! She just laughed at me and said, "Did you expect anything less?" :) She's so ready for Saturday, I'm not!

In other news, DD got her Paper 2 Chemistry remarked (after her teachers reviewed her papers) and got her A star! She had nothing to lose by asking for a remark, as she had already met her Sheffield offer conditions with her other three A grades (Biology, Maths, and Physics). She only needed 2 extra marks and was awarded 3. If she ever decides to drop Medicine, she'll have a very competitive application! 😂

@PurryGrowls did yours go for a remark in the end?

That’s fantastic news about the A*!

I think you’re lucky DD will share timetable with you. Let’s just say we are playing it by ear day by day!

good news is that I’ll see DS later today as I’ve brought things from home as he’s forgotten them and Im in the office.

inae · 16/09/2026 12:22

Thanks. I asked her to share the timetable and she obliged 😁 She's also shared details of the societies she plans to join, none are academic LOL. That might all change after frehsers week but it all looks exciting.

However, I fully expect to chase her if I need to speak with her, once she is there. I signed up to Snapchat only because she never answers on WhatsApp or phone. 😎

FruAashild · 16/09/2026 13:09

DD1 is chatting on Whatapp to me and DD2 daily but poor DH is getting much less frequent communication. But we are going to see her on Saturday which will be nice. Time to meet the flatmates!

Maybe set up a family WhatsApp group so your DD doesn't have to repeat herself and DH doesn't get left out . Good she's in contact though

inae · 16/09/2026 14:32

@FruAashild which uni is that? Sorry, my memory isn't the best. Glad you get to visit so soon :-)

PurryGrowls · 17/09/2026 02:14

Sounds like freshers weeks are going well so far! For the students anyway 🙃

Great news re the A-star@inae Definitely worth the cost for you, that’s amazing! We did pay for one bio paper to be remarked - my DD only needed a mark to get an A-star but unfortunately we just heard she lost one instead. Typical! Never mind, she has her grades and place - not long till she starts now 🙂

Good luck to all those heading to uni this weekend!

Oh we've got a family WhatsApp, has done for years but she messages me and DD2 separately and talks to us about different things.

@inae , she's at Sunderland, it's actually close enough to commute but she wanted to live in Halls. Makes it very easy to visit though.

bluefineliner · 17/09/2026 07:05

Hi just reading your updates.

@MyGreyBiscuit are you reasonably close to Ds uni? It will be strange 'visiting' him in his new home I bet!

@inae great news on the Astar! sometimes it is just for them that they need to know isn't it. I am still in awe at our YP being able to get A and Astars in such challenging subjects.

@FruAashild we have different versions of family whatsapp groups too, one with just the girls so DH doesn't have to read the details and one is going to be set up for just DD and DH and I for uni level stuff whilst she settles in.

DD goes tomorrow so is packing atm. I have kept right out of the packing as I have been working over the past week and feel she needs to be able to take control of it all now. I will have a couple of hours tomorrow morning before we set off which I know if I had to, could do the whole of her packing in that time too 😂hopefully won't be necessary. Fitting everything in the car could be a challenge though!

I had a conversation with 2 other mums at work yesterday who have YP going to uni this weekend too. We are all feeling similar so it is nice to feel heard.

I am looking forward to hearing about the course and settling in over the coming weeks and hope there are more happy than homesick tears from DD 😁.

MyGreyBiscuit · 17/09/2026 08:24

Hi @bluefineliner ! Well he’s close enough. I work in London and he’s in London so I brought some of the things he forgot to pack to work and it was great to see him for a few minutes. He came to my work place rather than me go to him (mostly because I had no time and he was still being a fresher!!)

we talked briefly about his plans over the next few weekends as his sister turns 16 in the next week!! So we thought we’d go up to see him and for a nice meal one of the weekends. I hope we get to do that.

Sachetaandb · 17/09/2026 09:14

Good luck with the packing. I know a couple of families whose DC ended up taking the train because there was no room left for them in their (admittedly small) car!

We ended up taking both cars when we took our DS to St Andrews and they were both packed quite full, no way we would have gotten everything in the one car.

Sachetaandb · 17/09/2026 10:05

It is even worse next summer when they will have acquired roughly another car-load of stuff to move out of halls!

catty29 · 17/09/2026 10:18

Is there a medicine 2027 thread? My DD resitting A levels and UCAT and reapplying with extenuating circs this year. This place was so helpful last year so thought I'd check!

inae · 17/09/2026 10:55

@PurryGrowls sorry to hear. The experience with DD's paper was quite surprising, as there were 3 marking errors in her paper (she only asked for paper 2 chem to be remarked). She lost 1 mark on one question, but gained 4 marks on two other questions. She needed 2. We are getting a refund apparently, because the grade went up.

I'm now panicking that we won't be able to fit everything in the car. It does seem like a lot (too much) stuff!😂
