Hi, I can’t find a thread for students who are off to Exeter this September so I thought I would start one unless I can be directed please? My daughter decided at the last minute she wanted to apply here and got in. We live 4.5hrs away. She is my eldest so it’s all new.

@Bigfatsquirrel is your dc a dd? If so my understanding is that Exeter is v casual for going out - trainers at all times, jeans and a nice top sort of place, no fancier clothes needed - is this right? Just want to ensure she gets freshers week right, then she can work things out after that.

Bigfatsquirrel · 27/08/2025 08:57

Hi @Delphigirl ! Yes - Exeter is pretty casual and relaxed in my dd's experience. She has loved it and can't wait to get back there when her summer job finishes. She loved the nightlife (even though it's "smaller" than many bigger cities), the beaches, walking in Dartmoor etc as well as the campus and "proper" shops in the city ! She loves her course too !! I hope your DD thrives there. Smile

Delphigirl · 28/08/2025 08:12

That’s great, thanks so much @Bigfatsquirrel ! I’m sure she is going to love it as your dd does.

It all sounds great ❤️ has anyone else not been able to secure accommodation yet? I’m starting to panic a bit.

DS found out today that AO cannot offer any accommodation. Been frantically searching private but everything sold out. Looks like deferring is only option. DS gutted.

Delphigirl · 28/08/2025 18:23

Oh my goodness I’m so sorry to hear that! That’s so surprising, I didn’t know there was an accommodation shortage at Exeter. Has he looked on student room for tenancy takeovers in private accom? Sometimes people make last minute decisions not to attend… long shot I know.

Oh no…did the university send him an email on the 20th with their 3 remaining accommodations? My son has been told he’d hear by the end of this week. I’ve been looking at the private stuff but it’s either extortionate or sold out! Have you been given no guidance on what to do next? Surely they’d rather he didn’t defer!!

Delphigirl · 28/08/2025 23:16

@missperseverance this girl on the Exeter accommodation stickie on Student room is holding two accommodations and going to release one tomorrow - maybe message her?

My son got his accommodation offer today. An en-suite at Trust house. No idea what it’s like as it wasn’t one of his choices but he is definitely relieved he has something.

Delphigirl · 30/08/2025 14:33

Thank goodness @ser. I do think there is a fair amount off movement in October so if he wants to move I think it’s usually possible

panickedmum26 · 11/09/2025 10:28

My DS heading down this weekend as well. We were disappointed as he was given St David’s which is campus housing but off campus. We’ve been told there will be possibilities for movement at the end of September if it really isn’t working for him.

Delphigirl · 11/09/2025 11:09

I’m sure he will be fine @panickedmum26 . What day are you going? We have a slot on Sunday and have booked lunch in a pub afterwards. She’s excited!!

panickedmum26 · 11/09/2025 12:05

He moves in on Saturday. Hope all goes well for your daughter’s move.

Delphigirl · 13/09/2025 00:56

Good luck for tomorrow @panickedmum26 !!

panickedmum26 · 13/09/2025 06:19

You too @Delphigirl

Joining to see how others get on with accommodation applications. My son applied putting the cheapest options down as his preferences and I’m slightly anxious we’ll get an email today offering a £££ room or one in partner accommodation far from campus. Fingers crossed!

Hi, did he get anything on campus and half decent that doesn’t cost the earth? We booked private halls as she went through clearing so nothing left on campus but then even some uni run halls are off campus and one I’ve seen is not so nice. She has a lovely modern room in a townhouse with 5 others

My son is also going to Exeter to study psychology. It was his firm choice so we’ve been for open days and offer holders day and it seems a lovely campus. He hasn’t heard about accommodation yet and I’m also worried he’s going to be offered something very expensive. Are your children aiming to move in the weekend 13/14th?

Hi, indeed she did move in today and I haven’t heard anything since she was left there!

That will be nice. Has your YP joined any groups on Snapchat or Instagram with people in the same accommodation or on the same course?

Delphigirl · 13/09/2025 21:52

Hi @hedwig123 - no she hasn’t as she doesn’t know what flat she is in until she arrives, and her course will likely be tiny so she will meet them all Monday morning at a department event. She said she preferred to meet people in person which I can understand.
car is fully packed … and I mean fully, I think the bass guitar might be between her legs! We are leaving home at about 8.30 to get there for midday. Hope all who moved in today are settling in.

newmum1976 · 23/03/2026 07:33

How did everything work out for people on this thread? My DD is thinking of firming Exeter, but is a bit worried about the accommodation situation.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 23/03/2026 09:58

Same here!

Bigfatsquirrel · 02/04/2026 17:52

My DD just finishing her 2nd year. Exeter has been brilliant. She loves it, has thrived. She’s really impressed with the course and the staff for her subject and would honestly say they’ve gone the extra mile to support the students. She loves the campus, the city, the social life and the proximity to countryside and beach. She was self catering in year 1 on campus and had no trouble finding a house for 6 in year 2, and for 4 in year 3. The cost has not stood out to us (other DC were at other SW unis). Good luck with the decisions!

newmum1976 · 02/04/2026 21:32

Thank you so much for the update. It really looks like a great option.

Flashinggreen · 03/04/2026 08:37

My DS1 is coming to the end of his first year and DS2 is thinking of going there too.

All teaching staff and students we’ve come into contact with have been enthusiastic and interested in the students.

DS1 had an unconditional offer which made halls application easier, he found out he got his first choice in June rather than after results day, others haven’t been so lucky but there’s loads of private halls if the uni one they allocate isn’t suitable.

Course is going well, all teaching for most subjects is in the first 2 semesters and exams in the third which some parents on FB groups are whinging about but the semesters appear to be longer than other unis that spread teaching into all 3.

Campus lovely and green, the city is a real mix of shops and locals too.

It’s been a good choice for him and I would be happy if the other one goes there.

It’s a great university!
