Thought I’d start this thread in case anyone else with a DC who didn’t get an offer from Oxford (or Cambridge in a couple of weeks time) wants to say anything - I feel a bit out of place in the Oxbridge thread now but could be good to have somewhere to talk about how they are and what their plans are now.

We've only just got DS accommodation request in for UCL because we needed to submit the disability evidence at the same time. I'm hoping they have kept all categories of accommodation open for disabled applicants for this reason as Drs are not great at sending the information over in a timely manner.

I'm sure it will be fine but it's a bit nerve wracking to know that offers are already being made.

@catmomof3 what bursary's has your daughter got? Are they subject specific. Sounds interesting.

I hope revision is going well for all. DS is OK, had a bit of a wobble about how much time is left at the weekend but he's on track. I'm just trying to make sure he's getting plenty of fresh air and eating properly!

Not long now!

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine, I think he is getting more excited about IC and anxious he won't get the grades to meet the offer. Will be good to have someone to 'talk' to who also has a dc starting there. Has your dc firmed?

I was at the UCL campus at the weekend as I like the Renoir cinema there. Also love the Hare and Tortoise Japanese restaurant. Nice place for students to eat. It's a great area and very easy to walk to Soho etc

Hi,

Yes, he firmed a while ago. He needs AstarAstarAA for Imperial and AstarAstarA for Warwick. He has done three sets of mocks so far and got straight A stars in all of them, so grades wise he should be ok, but of course you never know. We shall see.

Lightsabre · 08/05/2024 11:20

Looks promising for your ds @mynameisnotmichaelcaine - have you thought about the accommodation options yet?

Feeling quite sad that ds school journey is almost at an end. Last full day today then one special assembly after exams and then the Leavers do. I guess not everyone will turn up for those events though so tomorrow is likely to be the last time they'll all be together. A whole new chapter about to start.

catmomof3 · 08/05/2024 13:00

@lifeturnsonadime She'll get a UCL bursary based on the fact I'm on a very low income. It's only 3k but will help her out a lot each year.

Newgirls · 08/05/2024 16:44

It’s a weird time isn’t it, the end of school. A lot to process.

That'a really good.

Glad that they give out this kind of support x

Trylinescore · 08/05/2024 17:22

The nice thing is that you usually don't have to fill in lots of paperwork to receive bursaries, which acts as a barrier in it's own right. I know most places simply acknowledge that you receive max student loans and discretely top it up.

Not yet - we're going to have a good look this weekend. We've done his accommodation choices for Warwick, but we didn't agonise over it, since he probably won't be going there.

pinkroseapp · 08/05/2024 19:27

My DS is waiting for the accommodation invite from imperial and he has had his first exam yesterday.

MirandaWild · 09/05/2024 07:53

Today is DS2's last day of lessons. Will actually be occupied by. Leavers' brunch (hurrah for the sunshine, as will be outside) and a bio practical exam.

I think he is much too caught up on the whole a level moment to register it , but I feel it is quite a moment. Too sentimental

PotentialUCLmum · 31/05/2024 18:00

Hope everyone is doing well with the revision stress…!

Just a heads up that DD received her accommodation allocation from UCL today - so a reminder to your DC to check their emails. She’s happy enough - location is right next to UCL so no travel fees (which is a blessing because for a shared bathroom, it is bloody extortionate 😭)

That should mitigate some of the costs @PotentialUCLmum. I'm currently walking through the campus on my way home from a meeting. Nice feel to it all and will be stopping for a drink shortly. Lots of places offering student discounts.

Have fun! I’ve never visited the Uni (which is ridiculous because we don’t live that far) but I’ve left it all up to her to choose and sort. Glad she’s not miles away though as I know I’d worry about her returning home at night.

Lightsabre · 31/05/2024 19:16

It's so central and I would imagine there'd be lots of people around even in the middle of the night. I've just passed an inter collegiate hall which looked very swanky. Probably ££ though. Ds is still waiting for Imperial to open accommodation which will be similarly pricey I should imagine.

FebuarySmith · 31/05/2024 19:28

@PotentialUCLmum When did your DD apply for the accommodation? Mine applied mid Apr and we’ve heard nothing!

she applied at the end of Apr I think?

PotentialUCLmum · 31/05/2024 22:14

Not sure if it matters but she did not put as her choices any inter-collegiate halls.

FebuarySmith · 31/05/2024 23:44

Thanks, just stressing a bit at hearing nothing! Especially given the 4 day response requirement.

Apparently it’s not unusual not to hear until August. Not sure if the inter collegiate element affects allocation.

FebuarySmith · 01/06/2024 12:37

Magically the allocation has been received. (Applied for standard UCL halls not inter).

PotentialUCLmum · 01/06/2024 14:33

@FebuarySmith yay! Only issue now is getting the bank to recognise the details for payment 😭😭😭

catmomof3 · 01/06/2024 17:39

I'm going London in 2 weeks as DD has a concert and the last train is before it ends so decided to book a room in a b&b and it turns out it's a 5 min walk from her UCL halls so gonna have a little look before we go home.

ladsmum · 06/06/2024 18:57

Not been on for ages so just catching up. Hope all DC's are coping with the exam stress and are on target to meet their offers.
@catmomof3 hoping your treatment is going well and that you are staying positive through it - it's a tough journey.
DS has firmed Imperial and applied for accommodation - hoping for the halls at Paddington as a compromise (can walk/cycle so would keep travel costs down) but will be equally pleased with the halls at North Acton which look very spacious and well equipped. Interestingly we had a chat to a Year2 student who had lived at S Kensington at offer holders. He didn't think the proximity was worth the cost (he spent lots of time travelling to visit friends living elsewhere).
Good luck for the rest of exam season.

catmomof3 · 06/06/2024 19:05

@ladsmum Treatment is going ok, got my 5th out of 11 chemo tomorrow so I'm halfway done. Had a ct scan this week so hoping for some positive news next week (hoping lymph nodes have gone down). DD only has 3 exams left and she's feels quite sad that her school years are nearly over.

Lightsabre · 06/06/2024 19:40

Best wishes for your next treatment @catmomof3

@ladsmum, ds has also firmed Imperial and we'll look at accommodation options this weekend. I just hope he gets the grades. Still lots of exams to do, full on this week and he's tired today.
