Anyone waiting for a Durham offer?

DS has applied for a STEM at Durham. Heard nothing back yet. So thought I’d start a thread so we can share news of offers coming though?
Anyone have any experience as to when offers for STEM are normally made?. The thought of waiting until April seems too much!

DD got an offer but not for Liberal Arts as applied for, but for another course. Disappointing but has made her choices easier. Good luck everyone

Headingto18 · 02/03/2024 17:38

@TragicTess is your DD not keen on the offered course? Did you hear today?

TragicTess · 02/03/2024 18:44

Heard on Wednesday. The offered course is very niche, and whilst she liked the subjects as part of a wider liberal arts programme, not enough to focus the whole degree on.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 02/03/2024 19:57

@mondaytosunday When did you book Chads for? I rung up last week and they told me they weren’t taking bookings for the 19th March the day before the offer older day. I also tried to book Collingwood and I was told the same! 🤷‍♀️

Revengeofthepangolins · 02/03/2024 20:59

@TragicTess Alternative offers for Durham Liberal Arts applicants seem to happen a lot, and often it seems for more unlikely options. Sorry she has been disappointed.

Revengeofthepangolins · 02/03/2024 21:01

DS2 and Is rated at the Bridge Hotel which was handy for the station and not too badly priced, lest useful

Just wanted to say good luck OP. My husband went to Durham, Biochemistry. He's now the Head of R&D at a biotech and doing incredibly well. He absolutely loved it at Durham, and I have very fond memories of visiting him there from Glasgow University.

mondaytosunday · 03/03/2024 00:15

@MerchSwyddEfrog I booked it on booking.com. I tried for two nights (19-21st) as wasn't sure if we'd stay a second night and Chads came up. Looked around at other places for one night (Chads did not come up for one night) and the ones in town were as expensive for one night as Chads for two so booked that for flexibility. There were cheaper places a couple miles out but we are training it so wanted to be within Durham itself. Not sure we will stay the second night but of course I'll be paying for it. I'd like to stay to explore properly but it means my DD will miss another day in college and she will definitely be missing a couple days when we go to Glasgow the following week! By the way just checked they still have a room available if you book from 19th to 21st.
@KittyMcKitty thanks - the 'walking tour' YouTubes I've seen seem to start at Elvets Bridge but nice to know there's a shortcut over Kjngsgate to the rest of the uni!

DS is still waiting to hear from Durham (also St Andrews). Starting to get nervous about a rejection from Durham, though it’s St Andrews he’s really keen on and he is contextual there as a young carer. Classical Civ/Studies so not really uber competitive, though smaller cohorts of course. I hate the waiting. 😬

MerchSwyddEfrog · 04/03/2024 19:12

Good luck to your ds @Innisfree hope he hears soon. We are still waiting for UCL.

mondaytosunday · 05/03/2024 10:03

Those who have been to offer holder day in Feb or coming up have you received an itinerary for the day? Subject talk I know about (though not how long they last), but what about colleges? St Chads is the only one I can find that says when they are doing talks/tours and we are already staying in it. We want to look around St John's and Mary's too. I know no guarantee etc. Though that in itself is extremely annoying as it might have been a deciding factor!
Are parents given their own talk? I don't really want to be traipsing around with my DD - I find she's more likely to chat with others if I'm not there, but she was annoyed at me at Exeter as she said everyone else had at least one parent with them at the taster session (open day she didn't apply there).

JobsLot · 05/03/2024 16:29

Ds is still waiting. One of the theology students that he knows didn't receive his offer until May when he was waiting. Oh well 😬

KittyMcKitty · 05/03/2024 16:40

Last year at offer holders day you could basically rock up to the colleges in the morning and be shown around. Chads and I think Johns had talks by the principals but the others just had students showing you around (we only went to Bailey + Mary’s). Marys wouldn’t show any bedrooms last year. We went to Chads, Johns, Hatfield and Mary’s.

in the afternoon for Sociology we were sent a broad timetable - room / time. There was a general talk to parents & students and then they took the students off separately. Then there was a general round up at the end. From memory everyone took a parent to the sociology section.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 05/03/2024 18:01

@mondaytosunday have you seen the booklet about the day? It’s a link on one of the emails sent. I only saw it as I made my ds send me his offer email because I had no information. The colleges are open in the morning from 9:30 to 12:30. They are recommending visiting maximum of 3. There are buses on to help get people to and fro. The subject sessions are in the afternoon from 1:30-4:30 and it’s depending on the subject whether parents can attend. I think there is more space on certain courses than others, I’m not going to my sons as there isn’t the space. They do have tours running for parents in the afternoon.

mondaytosunday · 05/03/2024 22:02

@MerchSwyddEfrog that's the thing! She just says 'why do you need to see it mum'? I'll ask her again, but thanks for the info.
@KittyMcKitty thanks - I think she put down Chads, Mary's and St John's (current top choice). Remind me which one your daughter is in? We've decided to stay the two nights so not arriving home at midnight and a chance to look around a bit more (weather permitting)! Glasgow the following week.

GoldenRuby · 05/03/2024 22:18

@mondaytosunday my DD is in Y2 at St John's, living out this year and next as most do after Y1. She loves her college, and still goes there regularly - shout if you have any questions.

KittyMcKitty · 05/03/2024 22:36

@mondaytosunday my daughter is at Chads and is incredibly happy. She’s living out next year as most do but thinks she may live back in college in year 3.

pm me if you want more info.

shoofly · 06/03/2024 22:00

At last! DS has offer for Physics (I was beginning to lose hope tbh)

ColdButSunny · 06/03/2024 22:17

Great news @shoofly!

EwwSprouts · 07/03/2024 15:29

@shoofly Congratulations to your DS. Hope he can attend an offer holders day if he would like to.

Jaxx · 07/03/2024 15:50

Brilliant news @shoofly!

Let’s hope they keep rolling in. There is still 3 weeks until Durham hope to have finished processing their applications even though that is little consolation to those waiting.

Looks like both offer days still have availability atm - although my son is already booked for the 20th Durham sent an email reminding him to book 😂.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 07/03/2024 17:59

Congratulations @shoofly ! 🎉🎉

legosnowqueen · 07/03/2024 18:12

Great news @shoofly 🎉🥳

Headingto18 · 08/03/2024 00:02

Durham offer arrived this evening - DD has gone from being very cool about getting an offer, to now declaring it her first choice!

legosnowqueen · 08/03/2024 07:45

@Headingto18 yay!
