Hobs in halls

Wakemeuuuup · 30/08/2023 08:00

Eldest is about to go to Uni.

We have some older but good pots and pans to give them but they won't work on induction hobs.

Does anyone know what the chances are of their hob being induction ? Thanks

Given how easy they are to break, I'd suspect the chances are virtually zero but don't know for sure

Ragwort · 30/08/2023 08:04

I'd assume it's very unlikely but your DC needs to check with the accommodation office. Don't take too much kitchen stuff, in my DS's experience they all end up sharing anyway, there is very little storage space and most things get ruined pretty quickly.

boys3 · 30/08/2023 08:09

DS3 Uni was, and very very specific in hall details. Not the case for DS2 though. Or DS1

the uni, or private provider if private halls, should have something about it within their accommodation section.

Gro · 30/08/2023 08:12

I'd say highly unlikely. Usually an electric solid plate hob. Can you look at the accommodation website and see if there is a picture of the kitchen?

MarchingFrogs · 30/08/2023 08:17

Just contact the accommodation office and ask. Some of the refurbished / newer halls do have induction hobs.

People on here saying, 'Very unlikely' isn't much help if your DC carts a set of what turn out to be unusable pans off with them...

FatOaf · 30/08/2023 08:18

My youngest had all induction hobs in her halls at Aberystwyth. We literally found this out as we were in the shop buying pans.

Wakemeuuuup · 30/08/2023 08:19

Thanks everyone. I've been trying to find something in the accommodation info but no look so far. I've asked dc to contact them. I already emailed about something else so don't want to get myself marked as the annoying helicopter parent 😂

Just send them with the old pans. If new pans are needed there are shops in university towns or Amazon or online or...

It will be fine. No need to worry over every small detail.

bigbadbarry · 30/08/2023 08:29

Agree there are shops or Amazon where they are going BUT there are loads of videos of halls on YouTube and with social media these days I’d be astonished if dc couldn’t connect to somebody who lived there last year and would know. To those who are saying it is very unlikely, loads of my dd’s friends have had induction hobs in halls! She does not.

NCTDN · 30/08/2023 08:39

I'd say to get ones you can use on induction hobs regardless as they may be needed in future accommodation even if not in halls. DDs flat for her second year is induction and I'm astounded at how many pans you can't use.

cptartapp · 30/08/2023 08:46

Uni of York is electric. I've just emailed them about this!

RoseAndRose · 30/08/2023 08:49

You can use induction-friendly pans on other types of hobs, can't you?

That might be the safest bet

denpark · 30/08/2023 08:55

Send them in with the older pans then you can always Amazon some over Christmas if necessary.

Delphigirl · 30/08/2023 09:45

Newer halls are almost all induction in my experience. Eg new halls in Exeter I looked at on a visit, private halls in London where my DS has spent the summer, private halls in Plymouth where my other DS is about to start.

Wakemeuuuup · 30/08/2023 10:17

Thanks everyone

That was only me and I admit I'm astounded but I think I've been scarred by the poster with the Airbnb scratched hob drama! My experience of halls is that people are not especially careful with kitchen equipment

Yeah I don’t know what the reasoning is but I imagine it is much much harder to set things alight and cause house fires with an induction job 😱

bigbadbarry · 30/08/2023 10:51

I missed the Airbnb thread though!

Letstrythisonefornow · 30/08/2023 10:52

Which uni?

OOlivePenderghast · 30/08/2023 10:53

When I was at uni, all the ground floor flats were disabled-accessible and had induction hobs but the other flats didn’t. We were told beforehand though I think.

Clymene · 30/08/2023 11:01

There is that @bigbadbarry! There were a fair few incidents as I recall which led to the smoke alarm going off ...

Comefromaway · 30/08/2023 11:03

My mum gave dd her old pans but we had to buy new as we got there and found they were induction. Ds's halls also has induction. Anecdotally amongst our friends I would say the liklihood of it being an induction hob is very high.

There should be photos of the accommodation online, can you not have a look at what the hobs are like from this?

PettsWoodParadise · 30/08/2023 12:53

We won't find out DD's accomodation or kitchen until she arrives at the end of September. We just know what college she is at, but all the kitchens in the halls have been refurbished or installed at different times and are all very different. We just got a cheap pan at TK Maxx that works on all types. We haven't a clue about size of room, storage, if it has a sink, if it is en-suite, size of bed. I quite like not knowing it means I am not remotely worried about any details as I don't have any information beyond it will have a bed, a mattress protector, a desk, a chair and a noticeboard.

JuneBeWonderful · 30/08/2023 13:52

If you say which uni hopefully someone on here will know. Or there might be a room tour video on Youtube of the accommodation.

Ds's pans work on any hob, he has one saucepan for pasta with a proper draining lid and one frying pan. He has been in relatively new halls with both ceramic and solid plate electric, no induction.
