Nottingham Uni

Hi all,

My ds is so excited to go to Nottingham- he only recently applied through UCAS extra and got his place on results day! He has gone round the houses regarding what degree to do...!

We have pretty much left it to him to choose his course and Uni since he will be the one living there and studying . He is really excited about the course and can't wait to start!

Am I worrying over nothing? I have heard Nottingham Uni is renowned for parties more than some others and he is not a drinker nor a party person.

I am sure he will just need to find his tribe! Am I worrying over nothing ( probably because it is my first child) - sorry!

I really don’t think Nottingham has a reputation for partying greater than others, harder partying than Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle? No experience of southern universities but I would expect they’re all similar.

Yes, you’re worrying over nothing 😀Even those with such reputations have a diverse range of sports, religious, hobby and social clubs.

Yes, will find his tribe, sending good wishes to him.

Oh he will have a great time - my son is also starting this year. Nottingham has a reputation for having a good social scene for those that want it but it also has a beautiful campus and loads to do for those that prefer a quieter life. I've just seen you on the other thread about accommodation and you say he is in halls on campus so that's perfect for the first year.

Students at all universities tend to go a bit crazy during Freshers while they enjoy their new found freedom but it definitely settles down and they don't go out drinking every night (far too expensive). My eldest didn't drink when he went to university and there are loads that don't. He was fine and your son will be too. As pp said, there are loads of clubs and societies and he will very quickly find his kind of people. I noticed there was a piano in the common room at my son's accommodation and a projector for movie nights so definitely catering for a variety of students.

Also noticed you were worried about the catering. Yes some people say it's rubbish but plenty of others think it's great. There is a good choice at breakfast with cooked items, porridge, cereal, fruit, toast etc so I'm sure he will find something he likes. They get a £5 voucher each weekday for lunch and evening meal looks ok with a roast on a Sunday. My son eats a lot so that is my worry but the accommodation has a microwave, kettle and toaster and they get their own mini fridge so we will get creative with some microwave cooking ideas for the evening.

My son was originally going to one of the SC halls near Jubilee but has switched to catered on campus and I am much happier as I think being on campus has a lot of benefits for the first year.

DS is not a party person and will be there, at Broadgate Park as his odd allergies will make catered food a challenge. If he's anything like new (went to the 'other' uni in Nottingham) he'll just eat chips and gravy .

He was getting v excited about the different clubs and societies, they are very varied. He's toying with trying to learn Welsh!

My dd is at Nottingham. She's having a ball. Sure, there is a lively party and club scene, but there's also lots to do for folk who don't party as much or who prefer different things. Lots of sports and uni societies to join.

The only thing is, he might find it noisy living in halls with everyone coming back at all hours from being out clubbing and partying...

DS1 is going into third year at Uni of Notts and he's not a massive party animal. He's having the best time of his life. Its a great student city, the campus is beautiful, fantastic sports facilities and frequent cheap trams to the city centre. Lots of green open spaces and a boating lake.
Accomodation is reasonably priced after halls. DS2 is going to York and the cost there is eye watering!

Thank you- he absolutely loves the outdoors and walking. He is keen to do the rock climbing since that is something he does at home!

We asked him to be on campus and in halls since we wanted him to experience life to getting know people. He is social but he also loves his own space.

Yes I will let him know flatmates can be noisy ..

It’s a great uni and a great town. My sons both went there and one of them now works there and so does his wife. What course is he doing.

First day we dropped DD off we saw Quidditch being played and the Dungeons and Dragons society re-enacting something on the Meadows. Loads of music societies, drama stuff seems very active and obviously lots of sports. DD took up polo !

Nottingham has got a huge population with Uni of and Trent so there will be plenty of non party people to make up his tribe. Or he might discover he likes a bit of partying 🙂

Nottingham and NTU are very popular choices with students from my school. NTU is the one that is specifically chosen because its a 'party uni' by some of them.

I live in Lenton, student central. It's a great area to live and actually pretty quiet. Feels very safe. Loads of new student block going up though. As council trying to get away from students on houses. So they might be a bit more lively. Not sure where they will all park their cars though.

Just also to say, I was worried about my quiet, diligent , non drinker DS before he went to uni. He's made lots of friends, definitely drinks now( !), and goes out to the small hours clubbing, which I do find hard to visualise.

They do change and adapt when they move away.

Hi, my yp is considering Nottingham Uni and catered halls. I was just wondering if all of your yp had enjoyed their year? How often to people generally go into Nottingham for a night out? Do they find it safe and how do they travel back?

@hjklop I live in Lenton. Student central. It's very safe. There is really good public transport, until very late. And possibly all night. and a taxi home costs less than £10.

@hjklop hi ds stayed in Sherwood and loved it- honestly he sent me pictures of his food and it looked amazing!

Cooked breakfast , dinner and pudding! Totally safe!

Well worth it !

@Blubell46 - thanks very much, I see you mentioned last year about your ds loving walking, outdoors and rock climbing - I was just wondering if they'd managed to take part in many activities relating to this/societies/trips etc?

@hjklop hiya- he joined the gym and love his walking . Tbh his course was full on so didn't manage to join the rock climbing. Something he is keen to start this year. He did join the gym and go with a couple of flat mates regularly .

Honestly the Uni is great! Not only the food but he said the lecturers were lovely , kind and enthusiastic about the lessons. Course was structured well and was always contactable.

Students are really friendly and it is a beautiful campus. Honestly can't fault it!

My dd is in Year 12 and am back in that process again.

Good look to your dc and the decision he makes.

My dd has just finished year 2 and was on campus (Rutland) in the first year. She's very sociable, so got involved with all the partying, but it's a massive university and there will be all types there. I think they used to take ubers home after a night out in the city centre (bus/tram in).

She loved being on campus in the thick of things and says the campus is really beautiful, with lots of animals and wildlife. She moaned about the food, but it wasn't a big deal really. The only issue was that it ended up being quite expensive as they don't have cooking facilities, so when she didn't like the food/wasn't back in time for evening meal, she ended up eating out/buying pre-packaged meals. But my dd is also quite chaotic/disorganised so she probably spent more than she needed to and missed meals when she shouldn't have!

As they have meals together she met loads of different people from her hall, and from neighbouring halls too as I think they can eat lunch at other halls.

When she was in halls they got free gym membership and the sports hall is so close, so that was great. Lots of student sporting events too - my dd is not at all sporty or interested in watching it usually, but they all went out to support their friends in football matches on the astroturf, just across from the halls. She's also been to some student fight nights to support friends!
