Huge congratulations to your DD @CinnamonJellyBeans. Really pleased to hear she's had her results at last. Hope you can all have a belated celebration. Glad she's enjoying her Masters in Paris.

I expect my DS1 and @HewasH20's DD ought to hear soon then too.

HoneyMobster · 09/10/2023 21:30

Lovely news @CinnamonJellyBeans - everything comes to those who wait!

ofteninaspin · 09/10/2023 21:43

Great news @CinnamonJellyBeans and so pleased your DD is enjoying studying in Paris.

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2023 00:07

Wonderful news @CinnamonJellyBeans.

Lovely formal hall with ds tonight, an absolute treat to see him and have a proper talk. He's getting no responses about a second year summer internship and I think his CV needs a shine up - it belatedly occurred to me on the way home to point him towards the Careers service. I hope they do that kind of thing.

ofteninaspin · 10/10/2023 08:07

@PermanentTemporary, if it’s a banking internship, DS found the Cambridge finance internship scheme really helpful. Third and fourth year students mentor those in the years below who are applying for Spring and Summer internships, reviewing CVs and so on.
For STEM at Oxford, DD applied for a series of micro internships that were advertised by the University.

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2023 08:12

Ooh @ofteninaspin I wonder how he would do that? Ds was talking about finance internships yesterday. (Incidentally mildly proud of myself that I did NOT say the 'not for the likes of us, are you sure it's for you' response that came to my lips from deep in my brain. There's no reason at all why he shouldn't do that). I'll Google it...

Ironoaks · 10/10/2023 12:33

@CinnamonJellyBeans congratulations to you'd DD!

@PermanentTemporary that sounds like a lovely visit

ofteninaspin · 10/10/2023 13:00

@PermanentTemporaryDS found his mentor through a society set up by students to help other students secure internships. DS was a student analyst with a society called FinSights so it might have been through that or it may have been through a different one. I will ask him.

goodbyestranger · 10/10/2023 13:07

I think much of the internship know how is purely informal - through general conversation with people in the year above and peers

ofteninaspin · 10/10/2023 16:20

DS says it’s pretty informal. Finance related societies are a good place to seek advice from people who have made successful internship applications

The RadCam was sprayed with a whole load of orange paint at lunchtime - DD4 was there a couple of minutes later

Apparently the idiot concerned rusticated from New College in 20/21 and also disrupted the Ashes

goodbyestranger · 10/10/2023 22:22

DD4 has sent a photo showing some guy with a powerful hose doing a great job at getting rid of the stuff. First concern was that the stone was so porous nothing would work.

Just Stop Oil, apparently.

Quite how vandalising university buildings (Exeter also) is going to change minds and influence people re climate change in a positive way defies my understanding.

Hi all, looking for advice on going into Oxford on Sunday 15th from London. There is a half marathon that day in Oxford and also train works which mean a rail replacement bus from Didcot Parkway. DH determined to drive not least because we will be taking DDog to see DC whose birthday is on the Friday. Is this a foolish endeavour - with the half marathon am I right in thinking Westgate shopping centre parking will be heaving/full and Oxford impossible to navigate? Any ingenious solutions - we are happy to walk a bit but worried Park and Ride will also be congested?

PermanentTemporary · 11/10/2023 05:49

m. Living near O, I would say that does present a few issues. How early can you get there? I think I would probably try Seacourt P&R. It does mean having to go through the A420 Swindon/Botley roundabout which is currently single lane only and can be v busy. Then the P&R bus will stop at Osney and you'll need to walk in from there, under the railway bridge. You could take another bus from the station if the walk from there is too long.

If you do that then the half marathon route itself won't affect you. But the earlier you can get to O, the better.

Spottyegg · 11/10/2023 09:52

Thank you - will check maps!

Oxonc3 · 11/10/2023 14:55

Thanks for this heads up as also visiting this weekend. Will investigate half marathon route!

Ironoaks · 11/10/2023 15:12

I'm meeting up with friends in Oxford on Saturday and impulsively booked a campsite where we can stay in our campervan, so we can make a weekend of it.
Then I saw the forecast overnight temperatures...
The van is not insulated and does not have a diesel heater. I'm packing the oodie, blankets and a hot water bottle.

HewasH20 · 11/10/2023 17:01

Enjoy your day out @ironoaks seeing how the other half live. You might bump into DD & I as she's popping back to see the BF and I fancy a break.

I always use the P&R at Redbridge. So much easier than facing the 20mph limits.

Spottyegg · 11/10/2023 18:15

Worried about the 13000 runners using the P&R as well on Sunday! Yes will be freezing cold as well 🥶 good test of the heating in DCs college!

HoneyMobster · 11/10/2023 18:43

DD says her room is too warm. It's probably a reflection of the tight (cold) ship we run at home. Last year she took to leaving her window open when she couldn't turn the heating down in her college room despite asking for help to do so.

goodbyestranger · 11/10/2023 19:13

HoneyMobster several of my DC have had heat pulsating out of unturnabledown radiators or hot water pipes. All had to leave their windows open even on the coldest of days simply to achieve a normal temperature.

JulesJules · 11/10/2023 22:31

D1's 1st year room was overheated and there was no way to turn it down. They were also discouraged from opening the windows due to squirrels.
