Have a lovely visit @ironoaks.

DS returned from New York/Boston earlier this week and is home for a few more days before joining Cambridge friends in France. Meanwhile DD moves to London tomorrow. The house will soon be very quiet!

Ironoaks · 11/08/2023 09:31

Thank you both, it's going to be an expensive trip but our normal mode of holidaying is campervanning, so I think we can justify splashing out. We also have a significant anniversary in August, so can claim that as an excuse.

Re gowns (from a few pages ago) big price difference between polyester and British made Russel cord. This is for a C college. What do most students choose?

PettsWoodParadise · 15/08/2023 20:12

DD doesn't always find manmade fibres work for her so I splashed out on the Russel cord one. I am also a sucker for a nice label that you seem to get with that one. It may need a bit more care and not so easy to wash but I think DD would be more willing to wear it. It also seems to have a bit more weight to it and less fly away.

DD's hair is also a nightmare with certain fabrics, she had a cardigan once that was plasticky and it was like she turned into a walking van de graaff generator 😂. I am not the expert though, DD not yet having worn it...so will be interested to hear from others.

For DS's college Ryder & Amies only offers one option of undergraduate gown, in polycotton, for £40ish. It is heavyweight enough to hang nicely and doesn't look shiny or feel staticky.

Malbecfan · 16/08/2023 11:57

@ramonaquimby I agree with @Ironoaks and my DD had the Ryder & Amies polyester one. Like me, DD can be messy so the ability to throw the gown into a dark wash was a godsend.

It actually has been lovely and I've found hugely supportive for the past three years to be on these (a long series) threads. I fail to see how it's 'showing off' (pass agg strike through or not) when we are all in exactly the same position.

HewasH20 · 17/08/2023 07:45

Waiting for the new intake to arrive this week and then I can lurk in the background to see how you are all getting on. Expect excited posts on graduation day next month though.

Juja · 17/08/2023 07:50

If you are new to this thread today - WELCOME and CONGRATULATIONS FlowersStar

Do ask away with all your questions. We all have slightly different experiences so there is bound to be someone who can help.

I've DC1 soon going into final year at Oxford and DC2 starting at Oxford in October after a year out...

madcattersteaparty · 17/08/2023 08:17

Delighted, absolutely thrilled to say that after asking you lovely people about gowns, I will be ordering one today!!!!!! Mini madcatter is going!!!

PettsWoodParadise · 17/08/2023 08:24

Thank you for the welcome @Juja . DD met her offer for her college at Cambridge. Now the hard work begins!

Panicmode1 · 17/08/2023 08:32

Congratulations to all of the new joiners' DCs!! Enjoy the celebrations. (My DS is heading into his second yr at C)

DD wasn't applying to O or C this year but has made her first choice offer (Nottingham) so we are celebrating here too 😊

madcattersteaparty, PettsWoodParadise, Dingbats well done to your DC - what are their subjects, and are they Oxford or Cambridge? Very exciting few years they have ahead of them!

Juja · 17/08/2023 08:55

Congratulations @Dingbats876

sorry for my poor tagging this morning and any confusion caused ! All so exciting …

my DC2 has a pre term session for her an initio language in September

ramonaquimby · 17/08/2023 09:03

Also buying a (polyester mix) gown here for DD! 😄

LaurelGrove · 17/08/2023 09:14

Signing in to pick up some helpful tips as DD got her Cambridge offer. Very pleased for her. She's gone back to bed...

Malbecfan · 17/08/2023 09:37

Congratulations to all those newly arriving in this thread. My DD1 is about to start the 3rd year of her PhD at C following 4 years of NatSci there. My DD2 is about to start her Masters year elsewhere, having got to interview stage at C in 2019 but no offer. Please feel free to ask any questions - I wish I had found this thread when DD1 went in 2017.

PettsWoodParadise · 17/08/2023 09:51

Thanks for the congrats. @goodbyestranger DD is heading to Cambridge and her subject is English. She got her marks and was only a few marks off the total so is ecstatic about that.

mutterphore · 17/08/2023 10:03

A huge welcome to all those joining this thread and to their DCs who've got their grades today. Congratulations! It's such an arduous journey for these recent cohorts and I hope all enjoy their time at Ox and Cam in every way, not just academically.

DTJ · 17/08/2023 10:27

Joining you as DD will be off to O in October. So relieved that the final hurdle is crossed!
