Yep dd with predictions of 4 A stars only hot her offer yesterday and all the offer days have been now.
It feels very arrogant!

I know it’s super short notice but there’s an offer holders day tomorrow (and today).

bguthb90 · 21/03/2023 08:37

Firstly, congratulations on your DD's offer. There are a lot of us with DC still out there waiting to hear from Durham.

Secondly, I agree with you re the timing of Offer Holder Days which, for a number of universities, are excluding those who haven't received a response to their application yet.

Finally, as a Durham graduate (albeit 30+ years ago) try and not let the lack of an offer day put your DD off. It's a fantastic university and their collegiate system is unique - not as stuffy as Oxbridge, but way better than just Halls. It's also a incredibly beautiful city to live, study and play in for 3 years

Valleyofthedollymix · 21/03/2023 08:42

Same happened to DS last year. Felt really pointless.

Oblomov23 · 21/03/2023 08:48

That's very poor. Shame on you Late Durham.

FictionalCharacter · 21/03/2023 09:21

Finding this “arrogant” is an odd way of thinking. Durham are known for late offers. Predicted 4 x A star doesn’t guarantee an early offer or any offer at all - offers are based on other factors as well as predicted results. Like Oxbridge they get many applications from very talented A star students and can’t make offers to all of them.
Durham has undergraduate open days in June.
I have a DC at Durham and they love it. If your dd wants to go, I recommend going to a June open day.
My other dc wasn’t able to go to the offer holders day or any open day for their university but still accepted the place, and is very happy there.

A June open day is pointless to her because it's after the day they have to make their decisions!
She has had 2 siblings at Durham, but a different department and a different college will be a totally different experience.

My DS is definitely showing people round his college tomorrow - is that too late notice?

Kazzyhoward · 21/03/2023 13:18

Durham is strange. Our DS put down 5 in his UCAS application which he submitted very early. He got 4 offers pretty quickly, I think the latest was January, but didn't get Durham until a couple of months later, and even then, they gave him an offer for a different course which he'd already decided he didn't want to do - there was a reason he applied for a particular course - but the Uni thought they knew best! We rang the Uni to ask if it was a mistake and whether they could give him an offer for the course he applied for, but they wouldn't budge! Very strange.

KittyMcKitty · 21/03/2023 13:44

@fUNNYfACE36 they did 3 offer days - 15 Feb which annoyingly was only day in half term we couldn’t do. Today and tomorrow- we are on train to London at the moment as part of our v long journey for tomorrow’s offer day!

KittyMcKitty · 21/03/2023 13:45

@fUNNYfACE36 sorry meant to say what subject is she going for?

fUNNYfACE36 · 21/03/2023 14:11

@KittyMcKitty my DD is showing people around St John's today/tomorrow. I can't remember if your DD wanted catered/Bailey, but if she did St John's is great.

fUNNYfACE36 · 21/03/2023 14:13

I dint think she really wants durham though because 2 of her siblings have been there. She wants somewhere knew.I do want her to seriously consider it and reject it on more sensible grounds.A different college and different departme will make fir a completely different experience.

@GoldenRuby dd wants Bailey - we’re going to look at the Bailey Colleges (not castle as been before) and Mary’s tomorrow.

Dd has already firmed Durham and aims to submit her college preferences on the train home tomorrow.

GoldenRuby · 21/03/2023 15:03

@KittyMcKitty I hope she has a good day, and that she finds options she loves.

@GoldenRuby how much does the religious links at St Johns impact students there who are not Christian/religious or is it a non-issue?

GoldenRuby · 21/03/2023 16:16

@ACJane it is not an issue at all. My DD is atheist, and she says that there seem to be very few who are obviously religious. There are some student there as part of Cranmer Hall who are looking to be ordained but this has no real impact on the overarching buzz of the place. When DD did her offer holder day last year she was not intending to look at St John's as she was aware of its reputation, but was encouraged to go in by the reps outside and it was by far the most friendly and welcoming of all the colleges she saw on the day. She also loves the location and the gardens are really nice - she is looking forward to chilling in them more as the weather gets better. There is also the brand new college library, which is a fantastic facility - especially as it can be hard to get a desk in the main Uni library by all accounts.

ACJane · 21/03/2023 16:23

That's so helpful - thank you!

wonderwoman10 · 21/03/2023 16:31

Presumably your DC went to an open day in the first place in order to check out the course and uni? An offer holder day won't really provide that much more info than was given in the subject talk at the open day. My DS has a recent offer and cant attend tomorrow due to mocks but it certainly will not put him off firming his offer. There are also many resources online that can be reviewed...

MBappse · 21/03/2023 16:41

Many are still waiting to hear... the timing is very annoying!

EwwSprouts · 21/03/2023 16:43

I hope she enjoys the offer holders' day. DS is a first year biology student and is having a great time. Biology lecturers have not been on strike in the main. He is in Stephenson College and has made some good friends there and through sport.

@fruitygal Also has a DD in first year biology.

Fruitygal · 21/03/2023 16:57

Hi @fUNNYfACE36 as Eww said my DD also biology and loving it! She’s a Snow girl and loves the college, uni and course. My kids all went to different unis but my boys had Portsmouth as a firm and insurance choice for very different courses. One went and the other didn’t.

GoldenRuby · 21/03/2023 18:49

If any of you are visiting St John's tomorrow you will be shown around by one of this lot. It is worth looking at the Instagram pages for each college to get a feel for what is going on - they will all do lots of fun stuff in the summer after exams, similar to this.
