@KittyMcKitty my son loved Chads at offer holders day and even though he didn’t partic want to share still put it top choice . He got allocated it and is actually very happy there and the room sharing has been absolutely fine. They have a huge room and an ensuite bathroom and his town house has a huge shared kitchen space too .

the welcome from Chads was amazing - I was blown away by it - and we all got given Lunch when we did drop off freshers week . The Freshers programme was great too and had a choice of activities so you could do a night in ( Eg murder mysteries etc ) or a night out ( clubbing ) and there were also things for all.
Chads is an independent college so has its own catering arrangements . Meals are 7 days a week / 3 times a day and a great way to meet other students .

If anyone’s DC are at Durham and at South College (or any self catered ones near there) - where do they buy their food? I can’t seem to see any supermarkets too nearby on Google maps.

Fruitygal · 27/03/2023 07:28

Hi @GiantHam ! My DD is at John Snow next door.

They tend to get a delivery my DD joins with three others and therefore the delivery cost is super cheap. Tescos is their choice but I’ve seen Ocado and Waitrose there too when we’ve gone to visit.

I think there are buses to other supermarkets or kids walk there and get a cab back between them with the shopping.

There are two small Tescos in town for things you forget.

John Snow this year have give the flats free veg boxes and fruit boxes several times too!

@NYE2023 Chads sounds just so amazing- Dd and I both loved it from the minute we walked through the door. The covered courtyard, the gardens with the netball post, the little study rooms - all of it. It’s perfect which of course is why it’s so popular. Dd would happily share a room there (having previously been anti sharing).

Anyway she needs to get the grades first and then hope for the best 🤞🏻

Does anyone have any feedback on what Collingwood is like? And St Cuths? Thanks so much! Decisions decisions!

LockInAtTheFeathers · 27/03/2023 09:23

I know Mary's has been mentioned but Van Mildert is another catered college with all single rooms.

EwwSprouts · 27/03/2023 09:33

@GiantHam DS buys bits at the Tesco Express in town and there is an expensive convenience store nearer when he just wants milk. He and flatmates club together for a Tesco delivery and some get the bus to Lidl. We take him to the big Tesco when we drop him off. It has all worked fine and he doesn't regret self-catering.

Collingwood - big, sporty and a lot of investment in the last decade due to huge donations from Mark Hillery, an alumni, who now runs a hedge fund. Has stopped donating now after disagreement with university over free speech policy.

Very popular and hence highly oversubscribed. We visited on open day last summer and certainly knew how to sell it compared to some of other hill colleges.

Thank you so much bguthb90. We had heard same and was impressive although we were not allowed to see any rooms which a bit annoying.
anyone have any insight into St Cuths?

GiantHam · 27/03/2023 13:40

Thank you @EwwSprouts and @Fruitygal

@KittyMcKitty college allocations happened early - way before exam results . I think it was early May last year . It is a provisional allocation because some colleges will have too /many too few . Those who still formally had it been offered or rejected got a college allocation as well I believe . Most I know got top 3 colleges. But it seems to be a common theme that most enjoy the college they end up at . There is a Parents of Durham Uni FB group which is super helpful . Good luck .

You can get the bus to Spennymoor Asda from the hill colleges.
