Thanks for replies.

DD spoke to her tutor and they were very positive and reassuring. Actually, DD's very chilled about it but I'm on gardening leave and have plenty of time to angst 😀

DD is really wobbling. 2 offers so far and decided she wants neither. Holding out for a couple who notoriously respond slowly. She has top grades but universities seem to be focussing on contextual applicants. Need to think of a plan b…

Spoke too soon. Just got an offer from her favourite.

That old chestnut. So, not just focussing on contextual applicants then...🙄

They clearly were. Until the Jan deadline passed. There is a whole thread about Edinburgh university only accepting contextual applications for law. Not quite sure what the eye rolling is for.

I thought lots of the issues in some Scottish Universities were them favouring English (full fee paying students and non Scottish students from abroad they could charge huge fees to.

@IheartNiles

Are you from Scotland? Will your DC get free fees?

PritiPatelsMaker · 03/02/2023 21:05

Glad your DD is relaxed @HairinaBeaHive Wink

OliveKittyCat · 03/02/2023 21:50

@IheartNiles because you said Universities seem to be focussing on contextual applicants and that's just not true. The norm is that non-contextual applicants are getting lots of offers for lots of courses from lots of Universities. Edinburgh and Law is not a typical situation.

@IheartNiles
The thread was about Law at Edinburgh. It’s a highly unusual situation and cannot be used to beat up every university. Also international students often pay 3 times that of a home student. So universities do balance who they accept.

Also everyone knows that sometimes offers come out quickly and sometimes they don’t. It’s only the beginning of Feb. It is just after closing dates.

The university sector should probably contract! It’s been expanding for 10 years since the cap on students was lifted. Plenty of unis don’t have competitive entry and plenty of grads don’t get grad level jobs. So it’s possible to argue they don’t provide employable grads and maybe training should be work focused instead with far more apprenticeships allocated to 18 year olds.
