2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

1000 replies

Duchessofmuchness · 04/09/2022 21:56

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

@PerkyBlinder I was a graphic designer and worked in publishing too. When I started in the 80s the company was still using manual typewriters! I'm lucky in that our stable of magazines were the first to go desktop, so I got all the computer training. We had in house photographers and didn't really use illustrators, however my job kinda morphed in to more production with the arrival of computers. I went to Parsons School of Design and have to say it did not prepare me for working in the industry AT ALL. I'm amused when I see it ranked so highly (it was decades ago but was prestigious then too).
Industry connections is one thing I worry about when my daughter considers places like Falmouth. She is keen to do a year in industry or a semester abroad. She has been looking at Gobelins in Paris which has a summer course in English, and a well regarded Masters also in English. France is big on 2D animation. But she has to get on a Foundation course here first! Bedridden with flu so not doing any portfolio work at all at the moment.

mondaytosunday · 04/01/2023 13:52

How's everyone's kids getting on? My daughter unfortunately got the flu a few days into the holidays which threw her off schedule. She plans on getting both portfolios (one for Kingston, the other for UAL Camberwell) done a few days before end of the month, her sketchbook and essay is due then for art as well (also her history essay which was supposed to be half written over the holidays).
If she doesn't get in to either im thinking Morley College - the Chelsea branch does an art foundation. Any one know anything about it? Seems an art college better option than an FE college.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 04/01/2023 16:44

Sorry to hear about the flu @mondaytosunday sounds rough. Year 13 is hard.
Sent ucas form to uni today! DS goes back to his foundation course on Sunday and is mentally prepared for portfolio requests once it actually goes in to ucas.

PhotoDad · 04/01/2023 17:36

@mondaytosunday Oh no! Hope your DD feels better soon. DD prioritised courses which offer a Placement Year for that reason.

Good luck to @Lottsbiffandsmudge DS!

Acinonyx2 · 04/01/2023 20:51

@mondaytosunday I was in publishing in the 80s too. Hot metal type - bromides - 4-colour proofs - the whole 9 yards. All gone now. I could fix film with a scalpel and tape - overseas in extremis we made 'film' by copying/printing onto tissue paper.

Dd submitting portfolio to Herts next week but still no deadline from UCS Farnham.

Happy New Year all!

mondaytosunday · 05/01/2023 08:46

OMG @Acinonyx2 ! Yes I remember cutting the paper and sticking it down and if it was a line too long what a hack job! Sizing photos up with tracing paper...and reception just full of couriers waiting to take the pages to the printers for all the mags...

UCAS application has finally been approved and sent by my daughters college.
Kingston, Norwich Arts, Portsmouth, UWE Bristol and Worcester. To study either illustration or illustration/animation.
if she is lucky enough to receive offers from all which do you think she should jump at accepting and why? Interested to know your opinion on these

OneFrenchEgg · 08/01/2023 14:20

So we are still doing UCAS, looking for a year out first for some adult skills. Hope we submit on time.
Good luck to everyone who has sent theirs off x

Pourmeanotherwine · 08/01/2023 15:15

DD not submitted UCAS form yet, still waiting for feedback on personal statement from college tutor. Hopefully will be ready to send next weekend. Good luck all who have submitted.

mondaytosunday · 08/01/2023 21:58

@mumma24 no direct experience but of those you list only Kingston is on my daughter's list as a contender. UWE was a possibility but there's others she likes more. Animation is her aim but illustration an interest too (and the woman who did the talk at Kingston for their Animation/Illustration course was very good, if a bit patronising).

mumma24 · 09/01/2023 07:27

Thank you @mondaytosunday we didn’t get a chance to visit Kingston, what was the art college, area like please?

Localher0 · 09/01/2023 08:37

@mumma24 the actual art school is in a different area to the main Uni - but only 5-10 mins walk. It's actually lovely - an art deco style building that they have modernised and it's on the bank of the Hogsmill small river. Has its own student Union and canteen, library, loads of iMacs and great studio space. DD is doing foundation so spends time in both the main campus and KSA.

mondaytosunday · 09/01/2023 08:46

@mumma24 I was really impressed by the art school at Kingston. As @Localher0 says it's in its own building a short walk away from the main campus. My daughter has only done the Foundation Prep mini course (she's applying to do foundation starting in September) which is on the 7th floor (good leg workout!) in one of the other main buildings but all can use the facilities. Anyway, compared to the one person dark room we had at Parsons School of Design (back in the day, you know, before computers and such) the facilities at Kingston were jaw dropping! Plus Kingston itself is really nice though the university is on the western edge away from the hustle and bustle.

mumma24 · 09/01/2023 08:55

Thanks @Localher0 sounds wonderful

mumma24 · 09/01/2023 08:58

Thank you @mondaytosunday if she’s lucky enough to get an offer we have drive up and have a look round the area.

OneFrenchEgg · 12/01/2023 19:57

Hi - does anyone know how to log on for the first time to the AUB portal? They've asked for a portfolio and included a link saying there will be a message there - should dc have already set this up before applying?

OneFrenchEgg · 12/01/2023 19:57

^^ we haven't tried, it's a weekend job. Just wondering if anyone knew offhand.

Pourmeanotherwine · 14/01/2023 10:12

So DD has submitted her UCAS form to her college, who have told her they send them all together on 24th Jan.
She's gone for Brighton, AUB, Falmouth, Plymouth arts and Cardiff Met.
@OneFrenchEgg know long have AUB given your DC for the portfolio? Did you work out how to log on?

OneFrenchEgg · 14/01/2023 10:15

Hi - yes separate email , and 30 days. Still needs to be actually curated ! I think we need to get dc to go through and maybe annotate etc . Plus probably finish one piece.
Also a request for portfolio from Farnham but I haven't seen that email.
Today /tomorrow will be sorting emails and starting to formalise the portfolio - they know which pieces they want.

Pourmeanotherwine · 14/01/2023 10:26

Thanks, 30 days sounds achievable. DD hasn't decided what to put in yet, but I think will get support from her Foundation course tutors.

OneFrenchEgg · 14/01/2023 10:29

They have sent a link to the guide which is useful. Luckily they chose to do some life drawing so can add some of that, which I think shows some drawing ability.

My DS foundation uni do the same, all ucas apps go on 24th. Seems so risky. I have to try to trust the process. I'm not v good at that!

OneFrenchEgg · 14/01/2023 12:24

We also have a response from Farnham so that is two favourites to reply. Will be a long weekend I think! Farnham seems to be a conditional offer (passing an informal in person portfolio visit and getting the UCAS points).

Philandbill · 14/01/2023 19:30

Well ,DD has sent application form off. Now the wait...
