Anyone with a dc at Sheffield Uni this year or in the past

Is there anyone with a dc who got Sheffield as their insurance or through clearing?

Ds does not seem to have had anything yet about setting up an account so that he can book accommodation. They only guarantee accommodation for first years if you apply by 31st August and he is going away on Wednesday with possibly limited internet access.

Has anyone gone through this before & remembers how long it took?

Thanks!

I'd get him to check his junk folders and if it's still not there, contact admissions.

Decorhate · 21/08/2022 09:54

Thanks.

He says he has checked but I will double check myself!

It all seems to hinge on setting up an account, but a bureaucratic process as even once that’s set up there can be another delay before you can apply for accommodation.

If we are not further forward tomorrow we will email again, but the responses so far have been quite generic.

If it’s any comfort I think Sheffield has plenty of accommodation.
Sorry that’s no help with your query. My DC is off to Sheffield too but it’s very much first choice for them.
I hope it all gets sorted soon so you can both look forward to the new adventure.

Hi, my daughter changed her mind on course so went through clearing. The process to get to book the accommodation seems to take a while. She changed her UCAS on Thursday and got sent the link to register with the uni 24 hours later, she then had to wait for the account the we set up. She now has access the her account but apparently it could take up to 72 hours for the link to accommodation booking to appear. I think it’s just a case of waiting. Not too worried as some of the private halls are lovely and closer to the University (and cheaper) if she can’t get into the halls she’s after.
I will say I helped some of my year 13’s book theirs just before their exams and there was really good availability then.

Thanks both - the email came through earlier & he has been able to apply now. Though he didn’t bother to mention it until after he’d pressed the button - and put the less popular location as his first choice. Le sigh. Obviously I’ll be happy that he has something but his lack of research/engagement with the whole process is a teeny bit frustrating!

If he’s applied for Ranmoor rather than Encliff

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 21/08/2022 18:54

Rather than Endcliff then they are very close to each other, just across the road.
if he’s applied for the one nearer town, then he’s nearer town so good too.

MrsSteveHarrington · 21/08/2022 21:09

All good locations for different reasons . I don’t think he can go wrong.

Decorhate · 21/08/2022 21:24

We will have to wait to see what he gets allocated, but as long as he gets something it won’t matter too much exactly where - you don’t get the same level of choice if it’s your insurance choice or through clearing.

My son has UOS first choice but missed the deadline for choosing your room in June.
he has been able to just put the order of preference same as those with it as insurance or clearing. He isn’t too happy with his allocation but it’s apparently done by computer. I don’t think your son will be at a disadvantage. The only accommodation that’s in short supply is the shared bathroom type.

JanetheObscure · 22/08/2022 07:59

Where did he apply @Decorhate ? If Ranmoor, my DD was there three years ago. She was initially a little disappointed not to get Endcliffe, but very quickly came to prefer Ranmoor. It’s a bit quieter and only a few minutes further away.

Decorhate · 22/08/2022 08:17

@JanetheObscure I think you just said if you preferred Ranmoor/Endcliffe or City - don’t think you could be more specific at this stage.

This is good to hear. As the op says you can’t choose E or R now they are lumped together. My son is disappointed to be in a small flat in Ranmoor. Trying to see the positives .

MrsSteveHarrington · 22/08/2022 08:48

That’s was a reply to @JanetheObscure !

MrsSteveHarrington · 22/08/2022 08:49

The most important thing is whether you get in with your flatmates and that’s a lottery.

JanetheObscure · 22/08/2022 09:15

@MrsSteveHarrington Ranmoor has a really nice vibe and you just cross the road to be in Endcliffe! My DD's very large flat (11, I think) had an unoccupied room from the start due to someone dropping out. So theoretically there may well be the chance to move within Ranmoor, if not to Endcliffe itself.

MrsSteveHarrington · 22/08/2022 09:29

Interesting . I thunk the contract says you can’t move for 4 weeks but maybe an option after. Happy to hear about the ‘vibe’. It’s a shame that Ranmoor is seen as the short straw. I have pointed out he might get more sleep !

Gassylady · 22/08/2022 09:29

The uni accommodation is all quite close together anyway. Lots of private providers too my eldest has really enjoyed the city i hope your son does too.

MrsSteveHarrington · 22/08/2022 10:32

Do they have any events or parties at the Ridge in Ranmoor do you know @JanetheObscure ?
Or has it completely shut down ( apart from the gym ) . Doesn’t seem to be much or anything going on there .

JanetheObscure · 22/08/2022 10:37

@MrsSteveHarrington The Ridge is used for admin only, I think. Try not to worry. It’s honestly very close to Endcliffe. Not isolated in any way. DD and all her flatmates were really happy there.

JanetheObscure · 22/08/2022 10:39

Hope that doesn’t sound abrupt - am multi tasking!

MrsSteveHarrington · 22/08/2022 10:45

Thanks . Don’t worry! I’m trying not to stress!

Teachermum12345 · 22/08/2022 22:20

I think there is a 5 minute walk from Ranmoor to the main bar so they are really close together. Once you’ve set up a direct debit to finalise booking the room you can see the profiles of the other students he will be sharing with. My daughter has been on this afternoon and is really pleased that her flatmates seem to have similar interests.

Decorhate · 23/08/2022 14:47

Ds got his accommodation offer through yesterday - Endcliffe. Not sure if he has bothered trying to get in touch with any of his flatmates yet, he is concentrating on getting ready for Reading tomorrow!

OP posts:
MrsSteveHarrington · 23/08/2022 14:53

@Teachermum12345 the other profiles on my sons flat are hidden so they have chosen not to share the info. We aren’t sure what to read into that but it’s a bit disappointing especially when he hasn’t got put where he wanted to be.
