Bristol accommodation - Culver House

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2022 09:29

Dd got Culver House which although described as being in the west village, with most residences in Clifton, it seems as if some are in Park St which is near the centre (and would I think be more within east village).

It seems a bit confusing. Does anyone have any experience of Culver House?

@GoldenTobes Hiatt Baker self catered is really good accommodation, my DD has just spent a year there, also a room with sink. The catered accommodation is else good. DD had a very large flat (22 people!), amazing kitchen space, great for socialising and eating/cooking together. She said everyone she met was envious she was in HB. I know that's a change from years ago but it's been completely refurbished since then so its reputation has changed. Also excellent bus service down to the uni and city centre.

Motherhubbardscupboard · 23/08/2022 22:18

*catered accommodation is less good

Motherhubbardscupboard · 23/08/2022 22:22

Sorry @GoldenTobes misread and thought your DD got self catered. I actually agree with you about catered, much easier, my other DD had catered at another uni. And it's a great way to make friends. I know the self catered have been refurbished more recently but as far as I know the catered accommodation is perfectly good too.

Dancingintherain19 · 23/08/2022 22:26

@GoldenTobes My son has just finished first year in HB. He was self catered. Had a great year and reckoned the big flats were the best. Very sociable and more chance of making good friends.

Most DC will be happy wherever they end up. DD had a “shared” room in Wills old quad. A while ago now but it was basic! Had a fireplace though where she kept her shoes. The second room was accessed through DDs room - diagonally! Catered but relatively cheap. Food was so so - same suppliers as her school but less expertly cooked I was given to understand. However it does mean less to think about and it is sociable. Her female “flat” seemed to have loads of friends around the quad and in other halls. Generality people get on and manage, even if storage is a bit bizarre!

DD was in Culver House last year and loved it. I would echo everything CrikeyBlimey said in terms of the experience. The communal room in the basement was new last year and was lovely. The flats have been renovated this summer and if the standard applied to the communal room is anything to go by, your DD will be pleased. Trenchard Street car park is very handy for moving in and visits!

Just confirmed CH has had extensive refurb and Dd will no longer have the room with wash basin that had been confirmed.

Crikeyblimey · 06/09/2022 14:46

What’s she getting now?

Maggiethecat · 06/09/2022 15:06

No room will have a wash basin now but according to accommodation officer the rooms and common areas have been updated and they all have small double beds (which I gather some if not all had already).

She’s disappointed about the wash basin but she’ll be fine.

The wash basins weren’t all that nice actually and did take up a lot of space. DS had a single bed (looked very small).

TizerorFizz · 06/09/2022 18:59

The catered is more private school. They don’t care about the accommodation and wouldn’t be jealous of HB as it’s self catered. It’s not great in Wills old quad but they love it there. If you’ve shared a bathroom at school, what does smother year matter? You are right. 10 years ago it was Sh-te Baker. It needed refurbishment.

Tenpastseven · 06/09/2022 20:39

Ooooh Ooooh, whilst you’re here please….Any recent experiences of Badock? DS has just been allocated basic catered single room….

TizerorFizz · 06/09/2022 22:44

The main thing about any hall is who is there with you. It’s friends and shared experiences. So recent experience doesn’t mean much. I would say that anyone who is friendly, wants to socialise somewhat and is easy going will be fine anywhere!

Tenpastseven · 06/09/2022 23:16

Wise Words @TizerorFizz but does that also mean it’s a shithole? Just joking. You’re right of course.

TizerorFizz · 06/09/2022 23:24

Don’t think so! Nowhere except Wills is that bad! Unless they’ve done up the kitchenettes and bathrooms that is! Antique springs to mind when Dd was there. Original fittings!

DottyTrotty · 09/09/2022 21:11

Hi - my son has been allocated self catered Hiatt Baker. He’s just been emailed the names of 17 of his flat mates (6 have chosen not to give names) and they are all male names. He did not specify single sex and is disappointed it’s not mixed. Can anyone shed any light on this? He’s really happy with Hiatt Baker in general but just wanted to share with both male and female flat mates.

Tenpastseven · 09/09/2022 22:15

I’d call the accommodation office on Monday to check @DottyTrotty. Perhaps the 6 who didn’t share names are girls?

Tenpastseven · 09/09/2022 22:17

Sorry women/girls/identifying as female etc

NCTDN · 14/09/2022 21:47

Has anyone moved into Bristol accommodation yet?

stephaniestephanie · 14/09/2022 22:02

Sunday for my Ds.

DottyTrotty · 15/09/2022 22:46

DS moved into Hiatt Baker today - all went smoothly. He’s currently in a pub with 5 new flatmates. Good luck to everyone moving over the next few days

Tenpastseven · 16/09/2022 07:46

Sounds good @DottyTrotty
We are taking DS tomorrow. Good luck for Sunday @stephaniestephanie. When are you doing the love @NCTDN?

NCTDN · 16/09/2022 08:04

@Tenpastseven we're taking dd tomorrow. Has anyone else on here got Wills hall?
She's seen some photos and videos of her block from the group chats of people who moved in yesterday which is reassuring.

Tenpastseven · 16/09/2022 08:07

Oh that is reassuring @NCTDN
DS is in Badock (last minute allocation) and has done a little bit of ‘social media research’ on flat mates but not made contact.
Bit nervous about the traffic tomorrow. We have to do the trip there and back in a day (3.5 hr journey 😬)

NCTDN · 16/09/2022 08:11

3.5 hours each way? Ours is that one way but we're staying overnight because I'm a neurotic mother who needs to know I'm there if needed even though she won't want me
