Female halls of residence/colleges

DD absolutely loves Newnham College at Cambridge, but we're realistic about her chances and we need a back up or three. Does anyone know if anywhere else has all female halls or colleges (rather than just flats), as she's saying that's her preference?

Thanks

From reading other forums I get the impression that there might be a floor in a hall of residence that is all female, but not entire halls. Modern halls are huge so it is unrealistice to expect an entire hall of residence to be all female.

icetomeetyou2 · 10/06/2022 18:36

I thought that might be the case. We've not come across any in the universities that she has looked at, just female flats, but I just wondered if someone might have heard of somewhere.

I'm interested so did a bit of googling, and it seems that Cardiff has an all-female residence (Aberdare).

I also found there was an independent student residence in Manchester that is all female.

PermanentTemporary · 10/06/2022 18:49

And Ashwell House is another independent residence offering this, in London. Quite an interesting idea.

icetomeetyou2 · 10/06/2022 18:50

Ooh fab thank you @PermanentTemporary, I hadn't found those!

From my googling, it seems that College Hall in London, which was a women’s hall back in the day, is no longer.

Bristol offers single sex flats or floors

www.bristol.ac.uk/accommodation/about/flat-profiles-/#singlesex

though they suggest that up to 90% of fellow students will be international. DD had wanted a quiet flat but was put off because at the time, and maybe still, quiet meant single sex/predominantly international.

TizerorFizz · 11/06/2022 08:24

My DDs “flat” in Wills Hall at Bristol was single sex. Shared bathrooms and I think 6 girls. It was the old quad so similar to boarding school! There were boys flats too. One gIrl was international out of 6. . You could ask if this arrangement still stands in the Old Quad.

Needmoresleep · 11/06/2022 08:26

What year was this?

CMOTDibbler · 11/06/2022 08:29

I'm glad to see Aberdare in Cardiff is still all female - though back in my day overnight male guests weren't allowed - as I remember that being really important for women from religious families being allowed to live away

RampantIvy · 11/06/2022 08:29

I stand corrected, fortunately.

Ishka · 11/06/2022 08:32

Manchester Uni has St Gabriel's Hall which is a female only halls.

ChewOnAPickle · 11/06/2022 08:33

John Snow college at Durham has female only flats that 8 people share, they are either en-suite or shared bathrooms between 2 rooms.

Ifailed · 11/06/2022 08:41

In today's climate I'd expect female halls to contain dinosaur women along with the exciting new women.

Needmoresleep · 11/06/2022 09:18

It would be interesting if that were the case. Most Universities have a significant number of students for whom single sex/no alcohol/halal is important. These students are often well represented on bodies involved in student governance, and ready to campaign to ensure their needs are recognised.

TizerorFizz · 11/06/2022 10:51

@icetomeetyou2
Further to the query above regarding Wills Hall at Bristol, I attach their current info. It has not changed from when DD was there. As I knew it hadn’t. Single sex corridors or floors. As I said, plenty of single sex areas there snd definitely not all international. It’s catered though.

Just to let you know that while Newnham is all female, there are no restrictions on male visitors - I remember chatting to one student from overseas who was quite distressed to find a strange (to her) man in her kitchen one morning, but as the guest of another student he was 'allowed' to be there.

icetomeetyou2 · 11/06/2022 11:20

Thank you all

Don't forget that Murray Edwards is also female only at Cambridge. One of DD1's school friends was pooled there and had a great time. DD used to go there for some of her supervisions in years 2 & 3 so knows it quite well.

murasaki · 11/06/2022 15:54

When i was at Newnham, we had an early morning fire alarm, and there were nearly as many men as women outside, it was reported in the Times! Lovely College though, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

@PermanentTemporary thank you so much for recommending Ashwell House .. was recently asked for advice for just this kind of accommodation - really appreciate you sharing xx

If anyone is still interested, St Mary's College at Durham is now mixed but they have a female only wing www.durham.ac.uk/colleges-and-student-experience/colleges/st-marys/accommodation-and-catering/accommodation-detail/

My DD attends a women’s college and loves it. She’s at Mount Holyoke.
