Female halls of residence/colleges

DD absolutely loves Newnham College at Cambridge, but we're realistic about her chances and we need a back up or three. Does anyone know if anywhere else has all female halls or colleges (rather than just flats), as she's saying that's her preference?

Thanks

Wardlaw is an all female building at St Andrews. It's part of a mixed hall, so meals are mixed (most meals are provided and catering facilities are ltd). Study libraries in hall, music rm etc also mixed but the wardlaw building is female only.

Yep!!

Any claims to have female accommodation need to be considered alongside the University’s trans or gender policies, which will make it clear whether students can self-identify their gender. In most cases I’m aware of, they can.

Well that’s what I was going to say…

Coniston Hall in Manchester is all women. It's a private hall though so might be £££. There also used to be a university owned one, St Gabriel's, but I don't know if that's still open.

St Gabriel's Hall closed in 2019 according to this.

When i was at Newnham, we had an early morning fire alarm, and there were nearly as many men as women outside, it was reported in the Times! Lovely College though, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

Used to be a source of amusement when I was at Durham and Marys was still single-sex that if there was a fire alarm people would laugh at the amount of young men emerging wearing only duvets.

Newnham and Murray Edwards at Cambridge are all female colleges that have quite a diverse intake and an even more diverse range of people staying overnight. The fire alarm drill above

All-female student accommodation elsewhere generally tends to have a mainly international cohort whose parents choose an all-female accommodation for religious reasons.

All-female student accommodation elsewhere generally tends to have a mainly international cohort whose parents choose an all-female accommodation for religious reasons. It has a very different vibe.

And Ashwell House is another independent residence offering this, in London. Quite an interesting idea.

Anyone considering Ashwell would be well advised to make themselves fully aware of Ashwell's religious affiliations before choosing it.

This is an interesting read:

Similar to Ashwell House, Coniston Hall in Manchester is also run by Opus Dei.

Im sorry to have posted the link!

JocelynBurnell · 14/08/2022 22:22

@PermanentTemporary, no need to be sorry. There is no doubt that these accommodation options will suit the ethos of some here.

However, it's important that students are aware of the ethos of these student halls.
