Covid here as well, feeling sorry for younger dc who has just completed 6 weeks of GCSE exams and missing out on all the fun but also useful things like induction day.

Majaso12 · 09/07/2022 17:26

@bendmeoverbackwards @Notagardener. sorry you have covid too. Dd is much better now, tested negative on day 6. I seem to have avoided it.

She’s going to her bf’s for 4 days on the 18th. They don’t seem to be able to be able to be away from each other for more than 2 weeks! Was hoping she’d wait until after our holiday. Also hoping she doesn’t get her exam results and the other results she’s waiting for when she’s at his. Still no idea when she’s getting them. Other courses have been given dates.

Notagardener · 09/07/2022 18:08

Majaso, DD also doesn't know when she is getting her results. More irritating is dc1 who is waiting for his final results and claims no idea when he will get them. Hm, all (different) London unis ... coincidence??

Majaso12 · 10/07/2022 12:56

Dd said she’s glad she hasn’t got a set date when she’ll get them as she’ll worry more, would rather just suddenly get them. I think she’ll just find out if she’s passed or failed first and then have to wait weeks for marks. I don’t see the point in that. She says they have to be moderated and checked a lot, but surely that’s been done by now like any other uni would have done by now.

Oldowl · 10/07/2022 16:01

@Notagardener LSE's results were out on 7th July.

From the website:

Undergraduate summer results
Undergraduate students will receive provisional results on 7 July 2022.
We will email you when your provisional results are available.

Notagardener · 10/07/2022 16:51

Oldowl oh!!!!!!
Where is she, not in her room "dc, where are you"

Notagardener · 10/07/2022 17:04

Hm, they are fine she is not failing... apparently various results, 1/2:1/2:2/3

Oldowl · 10/07/2022 19:32

Glad she has got them.

First year counts for 1/9th of your DD's final grade.

Out of the four modules, you discount the lowest module grade then average the other 3 grades (percentages). That is your DD's 1st year grade.

Next year all 4 modules count and in the 3rd year all four modules count. Your DD final grade for her degree are her best 5 grades out of the 9 modules.

I am not sure how other universities work out grades, but this is how LSE's are calculated.

So some 2nd year student could know their final grade already:

1st year: 2.1
2nd year: 2.1, 2.1, 2.1, 2.1

(the final grade will be a 2.1 even if you get 4 firsts or 4 thirds in the 3rd year).

Notagardener · 10/07/2022 20:53

She claimed she didn't have an overall grade yet. Who knows...

BigWoollyJumpers · 12/07/2022 09:54

Sorry to hear of all the Covid - hope you are all recovered/avoided infection.

We have just come back from a couple of weeks in Sardinia. Gatwick was super quiet both out and in...... not sure where all the journos are getting their pictures, but it wasn't Gatwick South. Actually one of the easiest and quickest ins and outs we have ever had!! Weather was extremely hot, and mosquitos and sand flies this year a bane, reacted really badly to some of them, which I do have a propensity for, but especially bad this year. I suspect the long hot Spring probably had something to do with there being so many.

Rest of the summer is just mooching about. DD is doing 2 days a week at her cafe, her BF doing same at his job. In between they will chill, he has a pool, huge bonus in this weather. They are also planning a few day trips, but nothing more strenuous.

Having washed all the uni stuff a month ago, I now have a couple of days of postvholiday washing and rescuing my poor garden plants. DH was out at 6am this morning watering. Off to collect Arthur (cat) in a mo. I have missed him a lot. I actually quite like being home, going away is lovely once you get there, but I am always ready to come home.

Jng1 · 12/07/2022 13:48

Just popping in to say 'hi'!
DS2 has been back from Exeter for 3 weeks now and it's been lovely having him back. He seems in good spirits and currently has his (very lovely!) girlfriend to stay - they're totally loved up Smile.
When I think back to what a turbulent start he had at uni, how stressed and ill he was for a lot of it, it's such a relief to see him come through, having grown up so much! He also passed his first year with flying colours (72% overall), although I have no idea how, with everything that was going on.
DS1 has also graduated with a 1st and will be coming home soon, before starting work in September.
So all is good at the moment and I do feel very proud and happy for them.😃

chopc · 12/07/2022 15:50

Lovely to hear about your trip @BigWoollyJumpers and about your DC success @Jng1 !

OP posts:
Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 13/07/2022 09:45

I'm so pleased for your lovely DS @Jng1 It is such a relief that after a few blips along the way that our teenagers have had a great first year.

Sorry to hear that so many have covid. We are away at the moment and although we are having a lovely time we have been in some very crowded places. Fingers crossed we don't catch anything before our flight home.

BenchOfCompany · 16/07/2022 12:08

Ds2 managed to stay completely covid free despite the rest of us having it. Lucky too as we were on holiday this week. I still have the covid cough though and I can't sing, that was an awful realisation in the car when I tried to sing along to the radio and I sounded like a squeaky violin.

The rest of summer is just chilling, some movie marathons, book reading and some sixth form summer stuff for Ds2 and some computer science stuff that Ds1 is interested in. Apart from that we have no plans, it is bliss. Dh will be joining us for lunch every day as he only goes into the office maybe once a month.

It is lovely to read everyone's news, even older or younger sibling stuff too.

Majaso12 · 22/07/2022 13:39

@Pumpkintopf. Has your ds heard anything from Imperial about results or when he’ll get results? Dd still hasn’t heard anything. Her bf had an email to say he’s passed and progressed to next year and will get results July or August. Getting really fed up with them now. I’m thinking, surely she’ll get told next week as they haven’t been even told if they’ve passed on their course and retakes are end of August. Also, we’re on holiday on the 30th July, so would rather not get the email when we’re on holiday and we may not have internet anyway. All other unis it seems, are given a date when results are out and it’s the same date for all courses.

Majaso12 · 26/07/2022 12:08

DD’s bf got his marks for the year today at Imperial, so dd thought she’d be getting hers. Then she gets an email saying if they haven’t passed their modules, they’ll get an email which she hasn’t got, so she knows she’s passed. It said they’ll get their results by mid August. He got the email, she got today, 2 weeks ago, so assuming she’s got to wait 2 weeks now. We’ll be on holiday with most likely no internet. I think it’s really awful having to wait that long.

Pumpkintopf · 28/07/2022 15:51

Hi @Majaso12 DS got the 'you've passed unless you've had a separate email about resits' email, then finally got his results yesterday. He got a 2:2 so not great - only just off a 2:1 though and first year doesn't count for much on his degree course so there's still time for him to pull his results up. Second year is supposed to be brutal;I'm hoping he has more of an idea now having completed first year and had some wobbles with work mistakenly not being submitted correctly, how 'on it' and organised he needs to be.

Majaso12 · 28/07/2022 16:00

@Pumpkintopf. hope your ds isn’t disappointed, but good he’s close to a 2.1. I thought year one was worth 11.1% but was looking at an old specification and it’s only worth 7.5% now. Apparently 80 in aeronautical engineering failed something dd heard, which she thinks is about 1/5 of them. When did your ds get the email about passing? DD’s bf got it 2 weeks before he got his results, so assuming dd won’t get her results for 2 weeks, which I think is awful. He had one of his modules moderated down a lot because some cheated in open book exams. Dd is anxious hers are going to be, but her Summer exams were closed book and she said January exams have already been moderated. It’s going to be horrible hanging over her when we’re on holiday, she really wanted it out the way.

Notagardener · 28/07/2022 20:35

Bizarre, DD doesn't seem to be very fussed about her results and not told me much about it.
She went with some school friends to Italy just before the exams....
But showed some enthusiasm choosing her modules for next year.
And seems to have sorted out accommodation for next year. Sharing a flat with a friend. Rooms got snapped up so quickly they ended up offering above the asking price.
It's about 40-45 min walk to LSE

chopc · 31/07/2022 15:31

What subject is your DD doing @Notagardener ? Good friend of mine's DS failed one of his modules and need to do resits

I am confident your DS will get the very best marks when it matters @Pumpkintopf

OP posts:
Notagardener · 31/07/2022 16:56

Chop no resit luckily. It's a political science rather than economics part of LSE...

Majaso12 · 01/08/2022 14:25

Dd got her overall mark and overall module marks today, which we weren’t expecting. She got 67.1% overall. She’s happy as she thought the exams would bring her marks down, which they did. She was on 71% without the Summer exams. She said it’s the exam where she couldn’t get to the final bit on 1 question (worth 25% of the paper) in the time they were given, which she thought they’d mark really harshly and she’d lose a lot of marks for it.

Notagardener · 01/08/2022 17:18

For LSE not all modules count for final course mark(at end of 3 years). Is it similar for imperial college ?

Majaso12 · 01/08/2022 20:06

All modules count at Imperial every year. Shame because if it wasn’t for one module, dd would have got over 70%.

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/08/2022 11:35

Hi everyone, hope you are all having a good summer so far.

We've all been busy! Dd2 stayed in Bristol till early July for drama rehearsals. But after a long discussion, she since decided to pull out; rehearsals were Wed-Fri every week during July and August, so students were expected to either stay in Bristol or go back and forth.

Dh and I went to Bristol to move her from her halls into the new house which is lovely! She has a much bigger room than her halls room and the house overlooks the downs at the front. She's very happy.

She then went inter-railing with friends a few weeks ago and had a great time. She's home now for a few weeks and unfortunately it's not been going too well lately. She's been very critical of me, complaining about things (eg her new room being in a mess due to still having boxes of stuff and her sister's old bed in it). Just lots of complaints really. We normally get on really well and I'm feeling a bit sad.
