@AvocadoPlant . Well done on your DD’s internship!

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 21/06/2022 17:20

@Majaso12 Thank you.

Imperial are definitely working your DD hard. I suppose you could say that your DD is getting value for money but hard when everyone else has been partying or at home relaxing.

jano69 · 21/06/2022 20:22

Great to catch up on everyone's updates.

Sorry to hear of your daughter's break up Dobby. I hope she can still have a good summer.

@Majaso12, Imperial is definitely pushing your DD hard, sounds gruelling.

This week has been one of results. DS has just learnt he is to graduate with a First from Durham. You may recall that this is the boy who missed his C offer on A Level results day so I'm so happy things turned out okay for him in the end.

DD is having a good time enjoying her last few days of 1st year and is coming home on Thursday.

I tested for Covid this morning - my first time. Feeling pretty grim but at least I'm can face my fears after 2.5 years of dreaded anticipation. Thumping headache. I think you lot have all had it so I'm very much late to the party....

Majaso12 · 21/06/2022 20:32

@jano69 . Well done to your ds on his first!

Sorry you have covid. DS1 tested positive today, so we’re hoping we don’t catch it. Dd and I had it at the beginning of January and the rest of the family didn’t catch it then.

Some of DD’s friends are booking a holiday abroad near the beginning of July and trying to pressure DD into going. She’s told them it’s too difficult for her, not coming home until the 2nd and then has a write up to do. They don’t seem to get it. Some have said they’ve barely had any work at uni and they forget they’re actually at uni sometimes because of how little they have.

jano69 · 21/06/2022 20:39

Ahh @Majaso12 thank you for your good wishes. Here's hoping your DS1 has a mild case and doesn't pass it on to the rest of you We're fortunate to have this good weather to be able to open all the windows and sit in the garden.

Your poor DD, that's tough working so late into the summer when everyone else is letting their hair down.

chopc · 21/06/2022 22:12

AMazing news @jano69 !!!! Very well done to him!

AvocadoPlant · 21/06/2022 22:23

Congratulations to your DS @jano69 what a wonderful achievement!
We all had covid 3 weeks ago for the first time, hoping it’s short lived for you

jano69 · 21/06/2022 23:34

Thank you lovely people.

Pumpkintopf · 21/06/2022 23:53

@jano69 that's absolutely brilliant news! Congratulations to your DS.

@Majaso12 it's tough isn't it? DS has been presenting his summer project with his team this week to visiting sixth formers etc, then has to make a video and do a write up for the assessment. He hasn't had his exam results yet. His gf (imperial chemistry) has had hers. I think it's the inconsistency across departments that's hard to take, particularly as imperial's own marking and feedback policy claims they'll have marks/feedback within ten days of deadline.

Also grateful to you for pointing out the hall exit deadline! No idea when ds was planning on raising that with us 🤦🏼‍♀️

He is still yet to find a roof over his head for next year..!

Pumpkintopf · 22/06/2022 00:43

Also hoping jan and majoso ds1 feel better soon Brew

Majaso12 · 22/06/2022 07:00

@Pumpkintopf. I thought they all got results around the same time and not until July. Dd was told early July and her bf who does engineering, was told the week of 9th July but that’s a Saturday, so whether that’s the week before or week after. I assumed they’d get a total mark for the year as well because that’s how it’s been with my other 2, but now she has a write up after her lab on 1st July and probably due in a week later, they aren’t going to mark that in time. She thinks she’ll have to work her total mark out herself, or won’t get it until the end of Summer holidays, but surely they would and it wouldn’t be that long! Dd hasn’t got to present her project or do a video, but probably because she has 3 projects and not one big one. There’s been a mess up with the quiz they’re doing and a question she spent over an hour on and couldn’t understand why her answer wasn’t one of the options, has now been told there was a typo so that one won’t be marked! When she’s submitted that today, she has to finish 2 write ups for her project due next Wednesday and also has an exam Monday. She’s going to the Summer ball Saturday.

is your ds viewing houses? DD’s friend on her course also hasn’t found anywhere and she heard others on her course saying they hadn’t.

Longtimenewsee · 22/06/2022 07:28

Oh no @jan69 I hope you don’t feel too rotten. I haven’t yet had it but it seems to be all around at the moment.
Fantastic news about your Ds though ! It’s great when hard work pays off

im sorry to hear about the heartbreak @Dobbyismyabsolutefav. Hopefully a bit of distance and time away from the situation and summer distractions will help.

@Majaso12 I can totally understand your dd feeling exhausted. It seems so unfair!

dd has to be out of accommodation on Saturday so we are picking her up then . She has job interviews lined up for next week so fingers crossed ( she’ll need extra dosh for next years shenanigans)
Results came through on Monday .. she did well so all good to progress ( first year results don’t count towards degree for her ) Hope everyone’s Dc’s progression also smooth

Peaseblossum22 · 22/06/2022 10:07

Well done to all the dc with exam results and especially @jano69 ds , I hope you feel better soon. I am sure cases are ticking up again ds1 and his girlfriend have it at the moment as well and are both feeling pretty ropey. The sore throat seems to be the worst thing.

Ds3 has to be out sat as well so we are picking up Friday afternoon. It seems to have been a mad whirlwind of activity in the last few weeks with the college ball at the weekend.?His band has played at quite a few events as well and he was in that ‘so sad it’s all over’ mode when I last spoke to him 😂. He has really had a blast in college, but next year will be a new adventure .

Notagardener · 22/06/2022 22:36

Dc2 also still looking for accommodation. She mentioned by the time she has managed to arrange a viewing someone else has already made an offer. So doesn't want to bother with it anymore, just planning to look at floorplan and pictures....

Hm, hearing more and more people testing pos for Covid.

Majaso12 · 26/06/2022 20:07

@Pumpkintopf. Does your ds know when he’s getting his exam marks and total mark for the year? Dd said her boyfriend has been told that he’ll find out on the 11th July only if they’ve passed or failed, 31st July they get their exam results and won’t know for ages after, the total mark for the year because it has to be moderated which takes a long time and they only let a certain percentage get a first etc. Dd thinks she might not get her total mark until the resits have been done and marked. Doesn’t sound right to me. Usually by the time they get their exam results in July, everything has been moderated. Must be different at Imperial then!

Pumpkintopf · 26/06/2022 21:23

Hi @Majaso12 I don't think he knows 🤷‍♀️

A bit like your dd he's working up to the wire - currently in the library as has a project due in tomorrow. He did go to the summer ball but I can't believe how much work they've go to do in the last week.

Like you, I can't believe they have to be out of accommodation by 10am on Saturday. Such a pain as he also has tickets for wireless Saturday and now nowhere to lay his head afterwards!

I don't know if they have lettings or summer school coming straight into halls - if not I don't know why they couldn't be a bit more flexible and give them the whole weekend to move out, particularly students like your dd who still has lectures on the Friday, and the international students. It just seems very organised around convenience for Imperial rather than any consideration for the students.

Majaso12 · 26/06/2022 21:33

@Pumpkintopf. Dd doesn’t either. Apparently they are being let out from Monday so need the weekend to clean! Why do they need to be out by 10 am though, no consideration for some having to come a long way and who have in person lessons right up until the last day. DD’s boyfriend finished on Friday. Unfair others have to go on until the last day and then dd will have a write up set on the last day after the lab.

Dd has a statistics programming exam tomorrow at 10 and then 1 write ups for her projects to hand in Wednesday.

Majaso12 · 26/06/2022 21:36

2 write ups I meant!

Pumpkintopf · 26/06/2022 22:14

They do work them hard don't they!

Majaso12 · 26/06/2022 22:57

Yes they do! She sounded fed up and a bit down when I spoke to her earlier. She said she was just so tired.

calculatorqueen · 27/06/2022 11:55

Haven't been on here for ages. Lovely to catch up on everyone's news. Can't believe that the 1st year is over! And I know for my DS being redirected to Exeter (economics) was definitely for the best, he loves it. I think exam results are out later today, so keeping everything crossed and for everyone else getting their results.

AvocadoPlant · 27/06/2022 12:02

Good luck to him, they seem to have come out very quickly! DD just got her first year results from Exeter, the girl did good 😊
Best of luck to everyone getting results today and in the weeks to come.

calculatorqueen · 27/06/2022 12:46

Great news @AvocadoPlant!

BenchOfCompany · 27/06/2022 13:31

Late to the party as usual.

@DobbyismyabsolutefavRelationship break ups are the worst, no matter what age you are. Hope she feels better soon. Keep your mind busy is what my Mum always told me helped. This from the woman who met my Dad when she was 17. Her heart was in the right place though.

And massive congratulations to @jano69's son for his first.

@Majaso12 and @Pumpkintopf shitty situation with accommodation and work load. Hope your Ds is doing okay with covid Majaso None of us have had it yet, I have had siblings, FIL and friends have it but so far, unless we were asymptomatic, nothing.

To everyone at Durham and anyone else for that matter, Ds got his results back for all his exams, I feel like I need to say his grade just to explain what he is unhappy about. He got well into a first on all his computer science exams except one module which is much lower. He is puzzled by the mark and it is not in keeping with the rest. It seems that lots of students asked for their scripts or feedback. The department has refused on both counts.

Now I understand the scripts part but no feedback? No idea of where you went wrong to be able to improve next year? Why? Is this a first year thing? A Durham thing? Ds is worried he has misunderstood something important. They have asked for module feedback and grade distribution to see what everyone got. Some students are having to resit Sad

SeasonFinale · 27/06/2022 13:54

@BenchOfCompany do you think it might be part of their "strike" that they won't give the feedback? At one point I think Durham weren't even going to mark exams.
