I'm just basing it on the programme specification which says 7.5% - page 12 - www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/study/programme-specifications/physics/2122/ProgSpec-F303-MSci-Physics-2021-22.pdf

Yes I hear you re internship/work experience- some of DS's friends have something lined up, he does not and tbh I think he needs a rest but year 2 is supposed to be brutal so 🤷‍♀️

Majaso12 · 15/06/2022 08:09

@Notagardener. That’s good they’re doing that.

@Pumpkintopf. Do you know how long your DS’s friends internships are for? Is your DS applying for any this year? DD’s bf applied for one which would have been 3 months but he didn’t get it. He thought the interview went well, but the interviewer was surprised he was year 1, he said it sounded like they wanted them to be in year 2. I know DD wouldn’t want one that long, she’d get barely any Summer break, if any.

AvocadoPlant · 15/06/2022 08:24

DD has just found out that she’s been offered at internship at the university for 6 weeks (mainly wfh). So pleased for her, but has upset her holiday plans as she was supposed to be joining us for a family holiday right when it starts.

Pumpkintopf · 15/06/2022 08:55

@AvocadoPlant that's brilliant but what a shame about the holiday. No way she can ask for that time off I suppose...
What will she be doing?

@Majaso12 I don't know any of the detail I'm afraid. I know that DS did say for the actual physics internships within the imperial research teams, he was told they're more likely to get them in year 2 and up - I guess they're more useful then as have more of a clue with labs etc.

chopc · 15/06/2022 09:37

Gosh I feel so lucky to have done a vocational degree with a guaranteed job at the end!

DS coming home on Friday when we can have a proper chat about what his plans are .......

He has had an absolute blast at Collingwood and I am sure will really miss his college and corridor family next year .....

Thank you - I think taking a gap year before staring means she has some work experience to call on which I'm sure will have helped. The project is one run by the university looking at different parts of the student experience. It should be a really interesting project.

AvocadoPlant · 15/06/2022 09:41

*starting not staring!

Notagardener · 15/06/2022 09:53

Chop, with dc1 completing his uni course with no job to go to (as far as I am aware), I do so agree with you 🙂, especially as there is such demand of people for our jobs. We are recruiting from abroad.

jano69 · 15/06/2022 18:19

Congrats to @AvocadoPlant Jnr!

👋 @chopc DD has also had a blast at Collingwood but won't miss the college food! End of an era. She's back home this time next week and then off again a few days later to Ibiza with Uni friends.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 17/06/2022 14:45

Happily catching up with everyone's news.

Well done @AvocadoPlant

DD came home last weekend and she just needed a very big hug. She has had a great year, exams seemed to go reasonably well but she split up with her first BF so a few tears the last couple of weeks of term. I think a bit of distance and some TLC from Mum is needed. Thankfully she has a holiday/work/concerts planned this Summer so lots to look forward to.

Have a good Summer everyone.

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/06/2022 15:04

@AvocadoPlant well done to your dd, that's fantastic news! Shame about the holiday, it's hard when they want to do everything!

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/06/2022 15:05

Aww @Dobbyismyabsolutefav teenage heartbreak is the pits. Hope she feels better soon and definitely some TLC is in order. My own mum was rubbish with my boyfriend break-ups, think my friends were more sympathetic Sad

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/06/2022 15:09

I had a lovely 24 hours with dd in Bristol. We had a lovely brunch, ate a lot of ice cream, went to a museum and had a boat ride in the harbour. She's finally started her drama rehearsals where she is assistant director, and really enjoying them.

She's coming home for a few days next week then off to Edinburgh for a weekend break with friends. Then she'll probably be back in Bristol for rehearsals before inter-railing in July. Doesn't look like I'll see her much over the summer. She's always liked her independence and being busy but she also really values her home and family so I hope she's not taking on too much.

ChimneyPot · 17/06/2022 15:26

I haven’t been on here in ages but it is lovely to catch up with everyone’s DCs.
DD finished her exams in Brown about 20th May. She had the last possible exam slot and had to check out of her dorm later that day.
She went to New York with some friends for a few days before coming home.
She has absolutely loved Brown, the study and the parties. She thinks she has decided on an Applied Maths & Economics major with a cert (minor) in Computer Science which was not at all what she had originally planned.
She missed straight As over her 8 courses by half a mark in one of them but isn’t really bothered as overall it won’t impact.
She has 3 weeks done of a 5 week internship in a bank here, which she is really enjoying and is catching up with her friends here.
Lots of plans for the rest of the summer including some of her US college friends coming to stay, inter railing, festivals and even joining us for a week on our family holiday.

That girl definitely knows how to live her best life.

I am enjoying a year free from exam stress but have DTs doing exams and applying to colleges next year. One looking at US/U.K. and the other at drama schools.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 17/06/2022 15:36

Thank you @bendmeoverbackwards It was hard for both if us, me seeing her getting increasingly upset on facetime and being 200 miles away, and her very maturely keeping it together during exams. Young love eh, DD is convinced they will be friends again in time.

Your quick trip to Bristol sounds perfect and lots of exciting projects for your DD.

@ChimneyPot What an amazing experience your DD is having.

chopc · 17/06/2022 17:10

Sorry about the heartbreak @Dobbyismyabsolutefav . Hope she recovers soon from it but when it happens it's the worst thing!

@ChimneyPot lovely to hear of your DD's first year and plans

I wonder if having lots of plans is a girl thing .... I am confident DS doesn't have anything concrete apart from our family holiday although there would have been lots of chats about plans

SeasonFinale · 17/06/2022 17:22

Most internships are for those in their penultimate year at uni so end of y2 for a 3 year degree or end of y3 for a 4 year degree.

SeasonFinale · 17/06/2022 17:24

DS is also cramming in work as a lifeguard and also at Queen's tennis this week in readiness to stash the cash for his and his girlfriend's 6 week trip to Thailand in July/August.

AvocadoPlant · 17/06/2022 19:00

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav so sorry to hear of your DDs breakup. It’s so hard seeing them upset, great to have her home for mum hugs.

So good to catch up on all the news, sounds like there are some really exciting summer plans.

Thank you for the nice comments re DDs internship, she has negotiated a slightly later start so will come home early from our holiday, I’m concerned that relying on public transport next Sunday to get from the port to our home town could be a difficult journey. Particularly as the train is via Glastonbury.

For anyone doing pickups this weekend I hope it all goes well

Notagardener · 18/06/2022 00:49

Picked up DC's stuff (6.5 h round-trip) but DC herself is staying a bit longer (elsewhere). Seems I packed in the car some stuff (clothes) she actually still needs....

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 18/06/2022 09:46

Thanks @AvocadoPlant and @chopc I think the distance between the two of them is definitely helping.
Also having a blast at a certain concert in London last night with your parents is a very good distraction too!!

Lots of lovely plans for your DD @AvocadoPlant who sounds super organised. Perhaps the boys are a little more relaxed about concrete plans than the girls @chopc

Majaso12 · 20/06/2022 22:11

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav. Sorry to hear of your DD’s break up.

Dd not only has labs on the 30th June and 1st July, but now has write ups to do for them, which she said looks a lot, so she’ll have to work during the Summer. She thinks they’ll probably get a week to do them. I don’t understand why they are expecting them to carry on working so long. They go towards her grade so she won’t be getting an overall mark when her exam results come out. She seems to think she won’t get a final mark for the year until the end of Summer. The labs were postponed from January because of the storm. Really unfair to put them on the last day of term and then give more work after that. They could have booked a holiday abroad as soon as term ended.

AvocadoPlant · 21/06/2022 09:02

That does sound unfair!
Is this Imperial? My BIL was telling us recently that he had exams right until the last day of term every year (STEM) so never had a chill out time unless staying in London after the end of term. It still rankles with him despite being 30+ years ago!

AvocadoPlant · 21/06/2022 09:08

DDs internship induction starts tomorrow (from our holiday gite) and she’s been sent some pre-reading.
DD is now bandying round PM terms like Scrum Master and Agile working groups to our planned trip out today, much to the amusement of DH who is a senior Project Manager.

Majaso12 · 21/06/2022 09:39

Yes Imperial! Yesterday she was texting me saying she wants to be home now, she’s so exhausted and fed up. All she’s hearing from friends at other unis is that they’ve finished and are home and going out etc.
