Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Hi @heinztomatosoup glad of your company! It's going to be a long old wait for my DS I fear. Claims that won't bother him but as he sees his friends start to get offers I wonder. He says he doesn't see the point of applying somewhere he wouldn't really want to go to, even to get an early offer in the bag. We'll see. Might change his tune if God forbid he's still sitting on his hands in March.

Any pure Economics applicants ( not PPE or other combinations)? DS has got one offer for Notts ( his last choice) but nothing else. I wondered if any others in the same boat?

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2021 16:39

There are a lot of HSPS applicants sticks hand up! I did notice in my research that the numbers are growing...

SandyBayley · 09/11/2021 16:47

We already know that there are 1,860 applicants for Oxford Medicine- for 150 places. Down on last year's figure of 2,054.

That's from an email to candidates. I suspect those figures aren't available for other courses. I know others will be hoping they are...

fishingeagle · 09/11/2021 17:04

Hi @Eightytwenty pleased to meet you.

Darbs76 · 09/11/2021 17:05

My son has his first offer - from Warwick to study MORSE (maths and stats). He only applied a couple of weeks ago as he didn’t put Warwick when he applied for Oxford. Warwick was his favourite - but not necessarily the one he will choose as firm. Let’s see what else comes in

Gizmo98765 · 09/11/2021 17:25

@fishingeagle @Eightytwenty et al. - not sure as this is my PFB off to Uni opting for Nat Sci @ C and Physics @ other Uni’s. Not sure but imagine the offers for St. A and Durham will be the same as Cambridge and if that is the case not sure what DS will put as his insurance on his UCAS.

Geamhradh · 09/11/2021 17:31

Great news Darbs!

ACloseMatch · 09/11/2021 17:39

DD got her first offer through yesterday, from Leeds. It's a grade lower than she's predicted for each subject, so will be a great insurance. She really liked it there, even though we didn't get a 'proper' visit.

UCL have given her less than a week to do two additional personal statements (1k words!) for a very niche course there. It's HSPS for Cambs, and slight variations for the others.

VikingNorthUtsire · 09/11/2021 17:58

Congratulations to all the kids with offers!

@ACloseMatch I loved Leeds, fantastic campus and a gelato bar in the SU. Seriously what is there not to love?

petitebleu · 09/11/2021 19:12

DS had an offer from Newcastle for Spanish and German, lower than his predictions and very achievable. He's very happy to have something.

leonardo1972 · 09/11/2021 19:51

Looks like lots of us have Durham and St Andrews in the mix. I attended St Andrews in the 90s and absolutely loved it (even though I am a city girl at heart)….I would love it for DS to go - almost more than Oxford! I always found the train journey from Leuchars really easy so I’m not too worried about the journey. Sigh….I guess we will be waiting a long time to hear back about both Durham and St Andrews though. In the meantime I am trying to “big up” Warwick as it’s the only university to make an offer thus far.

Darbs76 · 09/11/2021 20:41

@leonardo1972 - my son isn’t phased by the journey to St A. We found the flight quite straightforward (even though multiple modes of transport)! I wouldn’t mind sitting on the train for 5hrs personally. Could watch a couple of movies, read a book etc. The terms are 16wks in St A compared to 8wks at Oxford! I didn’t realise there was such a difference. We both loved Warwick. If DS does get an offer from St A it could be a hard choice between St A and Warwick. Think he would go for St A even though Warwick is his favourite of all 5 of his options. That’s if Oxford is off the table of course. Now we nervously await news of Oxford interviews as St A I think will be ages before they make an offer (or not)

Darbs76 · 09/11/2021 20:43

Well done to everyone else with offers. It feels like a triumph we have got this far! I think he might hear soon about Edinburgh too as others have (only put that in on Friday though)

Yep I wished DD had wanted to do history and politics now as she had originally planned. I don't think she stands a chance to be honest but still worth a try!

I think DS might be the only doing sociology A Level?

fishingeagle · 09/11/2021 21:22

@Gizmo98765 my DS in the same boat re an insurance offer ie he may end up not having one. He actually prefers those of his choices that usually offer AAA rather than A*AA so how that might work who knows?Choices have consequences...Congratulations to all with offers! Hoping that happy state of affairs might eventually manifest itself here...

petitebleu · 09/11/2021 21:24

I'm really hoping we get a Durham offer, especially as DS has applied to my old college. His favourite is Edinburgh. Pleased with Newcastle but it's too close to home really.

CurlyGirlsMum · 09/11/2021 21:46

Hello to you all and good luck to all your DC.

DD has applied to Oxford and hopes to follow her older brothers there. She has submitted her two essays to the college by email but has not had an acknowledgement.

Is this normal or should she should have had confirmation of receipt? Her brothers applied for different subjects so we haven’t submitted work before. Thank you to anyone who can shed light on this…

I was at St Andrews in the 90s too. I hope my son ends up there - I don't visit much and quite would like to have the excuse!! I had hoped my daughter would apply there too but she didn't like the course offering
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 09/11/2021 22:18

@CurlyGirlsMum DD submitted her essays this afternoon (ancient and modern history) and has had a confirmation receipt, but maybe it’s subject specific? So now it’s just a matter of waiting for HAT results and whether or not she gets an interview. She’s starting to want it a bit more now, as she was a bit wobbly. I think that the more she reads/watches about how humanities in particular are taught, the more it seems to relate to how she learns best.

Though having always discounted Birmingham (as daddy went there!) she was blown away by the archeology department at the Open day and ended up applying there for archeology and ancient history! They have offered her AAB though if she gets an A in her EPQ and firms them, they have reduced it to BBB, with a first choice of accommodation! So that looks quite inviting as well as being great insurance. They also have a great orchestra, which is really important for her as well.
Her other choices are Cardiff and Exeter-quite tricky for her as she wanted to do a combination of modern history and classics and there are only around 8-10 who do the course she wants. Her 6th form said she had to put a non RG uni down (couldn’t really explain why) so she put Swansea as it has a nice beach!🤣

CurlyGirlsMum · 09/11/2021 22:28

@MrsElijahMikaelson Thank you. I will get her to check it was received.

For more views of Bristol, the film crew for Outlaws got about a bit.

Horace123 · 10/11/2021 05:32

@ProggyMat spoke to DS and it sounds like the acknowledgement was a generic one all applicants to that college would have got. Maybe different colleges do different things? Sorry, hope I haven’t worried you for no reason. If DD hasn’t heard is it worth a follow up email just checking it’s been received?
