Some of us have found these threads helpful, so I'm starting a new one to take us through

...end-of-year exams (and parties)

...homecoming for the vacation (and hibernation aestivation for this thread?)

...return in the autumn (and more normal college life?)

Posters old and new welcome to join the discussion. Any tips for finding a summer job?

Oh, and for reference, I have a DS just completing his first year in a small humanity in a tiny college.

The poor thing hog. I hope she has the mildest of mild versions and gets well soon.

Does anyone know why Radcliffe Sq is closed on Sunday Morning?

Hoghgyni · 24/06/2021 18:50

Their households are dotted around the college & of course, they're all self isolating, along with anyone else deemed to be a close contact. Hopefully they will all be able to fight back quickly.

ofteninaspin · 24/06/2021 19:12

DD’s O college has had “an explosion” of COVID cases according to the Master and all planned events are now cancelled.

ofteninaspin · 24/06/2021 19:15

@unescorted It’s the Town and Gown 10k on Sunday.

Unescorted · 24/06/2021 19:35

Ta often

Malbecfan · 24/06/2021 20:56

Oh @Hoghgyni I'm so sorry to read this. I hope your DD picks up really quickly. Mine tested negative on the weekly C tests, which apparently aren't LFTs, which I'm obviously relieved about.

Supposedly this time next week I should be there but we've still not received any information. I don't know whether to get a new dress, or just wear something vaguely smart - I look a mess in anything anyway so it's just polishing the proverbial. If nothing else, I'm meeting an old flame before the actual ceremony (with DH and with old flame's DP) for a coffee or lunch which will be nice, and DD has booked a table somewhere for dinner for her, BF, BF's parents, me & DH. I'll have to be on my best behaviour as we've never met them. BF is a nice guy. Car loading on Saturday then DH & I will drive back home with all DD's stuff. BF's parents will collect them on Sunday & take them back to his place, then BF will drive DD here. He's doing his week's primary school observation in one of my schools so needs a car.

Good luck to everyone with DC still taking exams, and happy packing and safe travels to everyone doing pick-ups.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2021 21:34

That's a logistical exercise Malbec! Scary meeting the other parents though, I hope they are nice!

Looks like I'll be hanging out with you guys for another year. Grin

Unescorted · 25/06/2021 06:38

OYBBK that is really good news. Well done to your DD. Grin

Ironoaks · 25/06/2021 07:11

@OhYouBadBadKitten - wonderful news.

HuaShan · 25/06/2021 07:51

Congratulations @OhYouBadBadKitten great news.
Good luck to your dd today @Hoghgyni - hope she is feeling ok.
DS has last exam today - some drama yesterday as the Internet went down 10 mins before starting his paper but thankfully sorted via my mobile data

chitchattery · 25/06/2021 08:08

Congratulations @OhYouBadBadKitten - well done to your DD.

KaptainKaveman · 25/06/2021 08:09

We are collecting dd from C on Sunday - she completed her exams a couple of weeks ago and has been doing a fair bit of social stuff since then. Her department (MML) had a garden party a couple of days ago and she's been out with the cheerleading team and ice-hockey (yep, really!) team. Her college has clearly been among the more relaxed this year, which we are all grateful for. Overall she's had a good year although the workload is tough. I hope everyone on here and their dc have a great summer. Dd has a LOT of reading to do so she'll be quite busy. See you all next term!

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2021 08:47

Great news @OhYouBadBadKitten and very well done to Kitten jnr.

Pepermintea · 25/06/2021 09:06

Well done to OYBBK DD! Glad that she didn't have to wait for too long to find out!

Good luck to those still doing exams especially for poor @Hoghgyni DD. Last exam today for DS!

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2021 09:08

And good luck meeting the parents @Malbecfan!
We have yet to meet DD’s BF’s parents. They live in a country currently on the Red list and BF hasn’t seen them since New Year 2020. He is postponing his graduation until next year in the hope that his parents can be there.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/06/2021 09:41

Grin thanks all!

Good luck with today's exam takers. Hog I hope your dd is feeling a bit better today and that her horrid headache has subsided.

Nightmare HuaShan!

mutterphore · 25/06/2021 12:35

OYBBK, great news about your DD!

Hog, I really hope your DD starts to feel better soon and that they make lots of allowances for the exams.

Hua, how awful for your DS! I'm glad it got sorted but that's exactly the kind of technical hitch you don't need at that stage!

DS2(O) and DS1(C) now both safely home, happy and well and ready for our holiday, undeterred by the rain. I hope those still doing exams survive the last part of this term and that most can celebrate and/ or return home without being stuck in isolation for too long.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2021 12:50

DD has sent us the timetable for her graduation next Saturday and the rehearsal (inc 'hood pinning') and formal for her the night before. We get to have a long walk through Cambridge and a picnic if we're lucky.

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2021 12:58

Lovely to hear of Cambridge graduations going ahead Smile.

Hope your DD is now over the worst, @Hoghgyni and there are no ghastly internet glitches for those with exams today.

Happy holiday @mutterphore!

Hoghgyni · 25/06/2021 16:42

Enjoy your holiday Mutter & lovely news from OYBBK and the rest.

DD is grumpy as catering interrupted her last exam with today's dinner, as they are closing tonight due to Covid. Grumpy is definitely better than wan & pathetic, which would be unnatural.

Student Impact Statement covering the whole year has been submitted. Even if she needs to resit in September, I think they should give her a second chance. Her College said they couldn't believe how much she's had to cope with when they saw it all written down.

Malbecfan · 25/06/2021 18:07

Brilliant news @OhYouBadBadKitten. I'm delighted for you both.

@HuaShan, that was our nightmare last year. We live in a rural hamlet with crappy internet (think tin cans & pieces of string) and both DDs were trying to do exams online. I also had to set work and do some online music teaching all on the same rubbish connection. Thank goodness you had mobile data.

@mutterphore, I'm pleased both DSs are home. Have a lovely holiday.

@Hoghgyni make sure DD includes EVERYTHING on the statement. I hope she is not too poorly.

@ErrolTheDragon your DD is so organised (but I have thought this for a long time). Nothing from mine and by this time next week, graduation is meant to have happened. I will not get hammered before meeting BF's parents, I will not drink too much, I will stay vaguely sober.... yeah right! On that note, it's Friday and there is a gin & tonic with my name on it. Have a good w/e all Gin

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2021 19:08

I think I must credit her college for the organisation, she just forwarded their email to us.Grin
And today a rather stressed sounding phone call asking for where she should look for a white shirt, having drawn a blank in next and M&S.

Silversilverstreet · 25/06/2021 19:40

@ErrolTheDragon, M&S in Market Square has plain white school shirts. Will they do? They are on the first floor, directly at the top of the escalator going up from the front of the Food Hall.

Pre-Covid, school uniform was on the top floor in the other building, next to ladies underwear.

I was disappointed to see school uniform in such a prominent place before school summer term even ends, but they might be useful in this case.

Otherwise, did you suggest Primark?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2021 19:43

I suggested M&S school blouses, I think she was in the grafton centre but they didn't have any her size.

I then suggested supermarkets, I think she's ordered one click and collect from one of them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/06/2021 19:52

Dd bought a white shirt just in case. Still, it will be handy next year.
