I totally agree Witchend. There are far too many posters on MN who think that as soon as a young person turns 18 they become sensible, confident aduts capable of dealing with anything thrown at them. That assumption makes me so cross. I totally agree too. I think the flaky was-to-be-flatmate being a prime example of someone who clearly wasn't thinking 'adult' at all. And totally agree that some things are flummoxing to nearly all adults (including anything financial) let alone 18/19/20 year olds.

I do think parents of younger children have no idea. Lots of assumptions are based on how we were ourselves at that age but we're looking at our capabilities in a very subjective way. Also, pretty sure guarantors weren't even an issue when we were students (certainly didn't have to undergo credit checks and IDing to rent a student flat/house).

Not quite the same as we're in the US, but DD got her results not long after exams finished - however it was all pass/fail that term, so she simply found out that she'd passed everything.

She has been hired to be a math peer tutor this year for her work-study job, which she's delighted about.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/07/2020 17:03

I am in awe of your DD's go-getting attitude @HoldMyLobster - what's the secret?

OP posts:
HoldMyLobster · 22/07/2020 17:12

She never got round to getting a work-study job last year so we gave her a really hard time about it and insisted she apply for lots this year :-)

She was a math tutor at her high school - they all had to have some kind of voluntary job to get their community service hours to graduate, and the first year she washed dishes and was absolutely determined not to do that again!

TBF it is really easy to get jobs in the US right now. The Pandemic Unemployment Insurance is paying everyone who lost their jobs so much that there are absolutely tons of jobs available for students. My high schooler starts work in a restaurant today, and even my 15 year old is applying to the supermarket.

Loving your work on the other thread OP!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/07/2020 12:43

Thanks @Piggywaspushed!

Changing tack @Piggywaspushed, any progress with your DC's student let?

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2020 13:02

No. I was really hopeful I had unearthed a woman via Facebook with a nice sounding same age, similar interests DS but I haven't heard from her, although she said her DS was interested. I hope things ate going on behind the scenes!

Ginfordinner · 24/07/2020 13:33

Has he advertised on TSR that there is a room to let?

Ginfordinner · 24/07/2020 13:33

Or the university Facebook page?

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2020 14:25

I asked on the parents FB page which is where this person unearthed itself from. Lincoln doesn't really have a presence on TSR. Really, the girls needs to sign this form so the letting agent can advertise.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/07/2020 14:27

I really hoped your DS's friend would step in, @Piggywaspushed. The problem with having some 'random' moving in is that your DS and his friends won't have a clue what they'll be like. Of course, they could become best friends but it's a risk, isn't it? Sighs (you can tell it's Friday!)

@Piggy there’s a Facebook page called ‘What Would I do About University’... or something like that, it might be worth asking on there.

Ginfordinner · 25/07/2020 09:23

What I Wish I kew About University. It is a really helpful and supportive Facebook page.

Shimy · 25/07/2020 10:00

Thank you Gin. That’s the one.

MrKlaw · 27/07/2020 12:39

Results for Bath apparently this Thursday. Are others still waiting or do some if you know how your DCs did already?

We’re expecting at least one repair due to completely missing one of the exams ..

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/07/2020 12:49

@MrKlaw good luck to your DS.

UEA students already know their end of year results.

Not sure about other students though.

Decorhate · 27/07/2020 14:23

@MrKlaw Ds is waiting too. He did get one subject back already & did ok in that. 🤞for your son.

Shimy · 27/07/2020 15:03

DS got his results back last week. He did extremely well. I’m so glad it was encouraging news because we’ve been going through a really difficult time at home and failed results I think would’ve all been a bit too much. He clearly has been attending all classes and doing all the work and submitted on time (much to my surprise) although still games all day outside of that, hasn’t knocked that on the head yet.

Good luck to everyone awaiting results and remember if they’re not quite what they wanted, it’s still just first yr, lots of time to get their act together and improve.

Ginfordinner · 27/07/2020 16:39

That's great Shimy. Well done to your DS. I hope things pick up for you soon.

Shimy · 28/07/2020 14:24

Thanks Gin.

bengalcat · 28/07/2020 15:52

Mine gets her results 18th August ( Durham ) .

Ginfordinner · 28/07/2020 17:43

Why do Durham take so long over everything? I know people who have withdrawn their applications because they took too long to reply.

bigTillyMint · 28/07/2020 20:21

DS too @bengalcat

Shimy · 28/07/2020 20:55

Been meaning to ask if everyone’s Uni dc has been working since lockdown, as in work experience/internships etc and how long for? DS was hoping to do an internship abroad this summer but obviously that’s not going to happen now and this yr all been a washout work wise. Just wondered what everyone else’s dc was doing?
