UEA (2019) dealing with the unexpected and on to 2nd Year

New thread for the parents of 2019 freshers. Thank you all for sticking around!
At the start of the year we never would have guessed the topics that are currently being discussed in this page but I'm grateful we still have each other to help navigate our way through this with our DC.
With the emptying of 1st year rooms seemingly on hold for many until the end of lockdown our thoughts will soon turn to 2nd year accommodation and whether term is likely to start as normal in September.

DS too @juicy0. Think next year, when he goes full-on 'human' the only way is up too, as it's his particular field of interest. I gather only quite a small % are doing BA rather than BSc?

icanbewhatiwant · 23/07/2020 12:53

I asked ds this morning if he had results. He said yes...pass. I asked if that's it, does he get a grade or anything. He said no it's pass or fail. Is that correct? I thought he'd get more than that. I don't think anyone else is biology apart from @Itscoldouthere

Itscoldouthere · 23/07/2020 13:13

@icanbewhatiwant glad to hear your DS passed 👍
I’m afraid I don’t know if it’s just pass with no grade...
My DS just got a list with all the units he has to now complete/submit to try and pass. Annoyingly 2 are units from last term that he has to submit by 3rd August, he could have been doing them over the last few weeks, but only found out yesterday. We are going to be without internet from the 29th July till 7th August, so it’s a bit of a PITA !
The rest of the work he has till 28th August to submit although the maximum he can get is 40%
Its stressing me out at the moment, but I know it’s because I’m overloaded with the house move. It’s so hard getting rid of so much stuff both emotionally (and currently physically due to Covid) my life is being reduced to the contents of a shipping container, it’s very weird and getting more stressful by the day 🤯

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/07/2020 13:27

I know DS got a mark as well as the pass email. It may vary from subject to subject though. I asked to see DS's email containing the mark as I was very pleasantly surprised!!!

It might vary from subject to subject though?

That's a total PITA for your DS in terms of the two units he has to complete and submit by 3rd August, @Itscoldouthere. That gives him six days in which to do them? That's a bit unfair.

It sounds as if you have a lot going on @Itscolouthere. It never rains but it pours. Good luck with your last few days of getting the house packed up. Hopefully, you will be able to chill a bit in a week or so's time. Aside from motivating your DS2. It's good to hear that he is sounding more positive about everything.

icanbewhatiwant · 23/07/2020 13:48

Yes @Itscoldouthere I didn't expect you to know as your son is still completing stuff. Your life sounds stressful. Moving is hard enough as it is, without all the extra stuff going on.

It does sound a bit unfair not having long. I hope he gets on ok. Good luck over the next few days.

Itscoldouthere · 23/07/2020 14:14

If you find out anything different @icanbewhatiwant re getting some type of grade, do let me know, I’ll ask DS to ask his Biology friends if they got a grade.
The last bit of moving is always a bit full on but this move is more full on with us not moving into another house of our own.
Trying to reduce a large 5 bedroom house into a shipping container has been tricky, we’d shoved so much stuff into our barn and it’s all had to be gone through and mostly got rid off, Covid hasn’t helped.
My DH is really busy with work so can’t take holiday until the day before we move so I’m doing most of the sorting.
I’ve also just changed my HRT and I’m feeling rather strange.... I can feel the anxiety building, but I will blame it on the HRT change hopefully it will be temporary.
Yes the situation for DS isn’t great, but if he’d check the website more he may have realised that he could/should have done this work from last term. Things are not helped by there being no audio on the slides presentation provided, he’s definately feeling the pressure and is rather depressed, I just hope he can cope.
Anyway hopefully by this time next week the house will be sorted and I can relax a bit and DS will hopefully be a bit more together with this first bit of work!

Itscoldouthere · 23/07/2020 14:21

@icanbewhatiwant I just asked DS if his friends had been give grades or just pass/fail.
He said they were given modual grades ie 1st 2/1 2/2 etc... but not an overall grade, if that makes sense.

justasking111 · 23/07/2020 19:31

Does anyone think the unis may soften their stance re: so much online learning. It is something they might consider surely. If they need to batten down the hatches again, they will.

sluj · 23/07/2020 19:55

My DS is insistent that he won't get his results until he submits his final essay in early August. Not sure why the date is so late . I am beginning to wonder if he has an extension for some reason.
Well done to everyone's DC with results

juicy0 · 23/07/2020 20:02

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 same for my DD, her interest is human and she didn't particularly enjoy the modules this year but still did well overall.
I think for some subjects they get more detailed results than others.

DS girlfriend does not get her results until third week in August, the then has until early September to amend anything.

icanbewhatiwant · 23/07/2020 20:43

I asked ds and he insisted he just got a pass. I told him people on here were getting grades. He shouted at me, told me I can read the email if I didn't believe him. He was fiddling on his phone quietly for a few mins, then said they've actually just come through with a grade this time. So he does have a grade. His gf got into uEA through clearing and apparently she won't get her results yet as clearing people have to wait.

sluj · 23/07/2020 22:14

Don't they drive you up the wall ?Wink. The clearing scenario doesn't make any sense, does it?

icanbewhatiwant · 23/07/2020 22:48

@sluj yes ds obviously hadn't looked at his emails. When I queried it he obviously saw the new one. Yes...not sure if that's correct about clearing. Though his gf seems to know more about most things as her dad is a lecturer.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/07/2020 22:50

I can't imagine how getting a place through clearing impacts on when you'd get your end of first year results though? She's not done a foundation year, has she?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/07/2020 23:05

It doesn't really matter what they get in Yr 1 though as long as they pass?

NotSorry · 24/07/2020 21:54

@sluj my DS says he still has some coursework which was only given this week and he has a month to do it, so there is still ongoing stuff

icanbewhatiwant · 24/07/2020 22:31

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 that's what I thought. No foundation year. She was meant to be going to Cambridge but didn't quite get the grades. So applied to UEA through clearing. Can't see why it makes any difference 🤷‍♀️

sluj · 25/07/2020 09:30

Thank you Notsorry, that gives me confidence he hasn't got it all wrong. Soon be September

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/07/2020 19:39

I am trying to encourage DS to think about going back (even if only for a couple of weeks) very soon. They can move into their house from the beginning of August and he and DD are starting to get on each other's nerves after four months holed up together! Time for a breather! Wink

justasking111 · 25/07/2020 19:57

DS goes back to work tomorrow for the first time since xmas he has never been so poor. Will be tough earning money for seven weeks only.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/07/2020 21:20

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 ds's gf is moving into her house 8th August. She can't wait to leave home again. Ds gets his keys beginning of sept. He is working until third week of sept so I don't know what he will do, he wants to be with his new house mates. I get a feeling he will stay in the new place and drive back here to work each day. It's about 45 mins from Norwich. He'll be going the opposite way to everyone else! He has to be at work for 8am though. So it would be an early start. Will wait and see what he decides to do. It's not long really until they will all be heading off again.

icanbewhatiwant · 25/07/2020 21:21

@justasking111 yes my ds worked July to sept last year and he's doing the same this summer. A bit of a shock heading back to work.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/07/2020 10:55

Good for your DSs that they've got jobs @icanbewhatiwant and @justasking111. DS has been earning some money online over the past month or so but only with quite a lot of nagging from me but it's not the same as learning important life skills in a real environment with colleagues.

justasking111 · 28/07/2020 23:52

Well has worked two days and is a happy boy. It is good for them when things are back to normal. I was so worried he would oversleep when in fact he is bouncing around at 7.30 am yawn....
