Continuing the previous thread.

Exams, assessments, essays, etc.

Support, or lack of it.

Will they all get accommodation for next year and can they cook a balanced meal yet.

Haffdonga DS is also panicking about exams and is another one for whom a retake would be a big confidence dent. He has worked so hard and thinks he has probably done enough to pass, but it’s such a tough course. Luckily he has done well on his coursework and he is going into his last exam, tomorrow, knowing he has already achieved the module pass mark. One of the other ones though was a really difficult paper. The only consolation is that everyone else thought it was horrendous too. He is also dreading the thought of retakes, and has arranged his internship around being free for them which is typically pessimistic!

I have no idea when they get their exam results. I assume before the end of term.

brizzledrizzle · 30/05/2018 23:26

It's not really that people had extra bus fares through the strike but the non monetary disruption.

Quite. It's a drop in the ocean isn't it? Better than free ice cream maybe? Wink

Morvah and Haffdonga - hoping for good news.
DD thinks late July for results. I hope she means late June!
Eve, well done to your DS, my DD has her test soon.

Needmoresleep · 31/05/2018 00:24

Surely ice cream promotes well-being.

brizzledrizzle · 31/05/2018 00:26

It does in this house :-)

bigTillyMint · 31/05/2018 10:40

Brizzle thanks for the link - will send to DD. I doubt she had extra costs but she missed out on virtually all of her 9 hours tuition a week over however many weeks it was. We can afford to support her, but what about others (including friends of hers) whose families are scraping money to help or who have to work as well as study, etc. It is truly crap for them.

Needmoresleep · 31/05/2018 11:17

BTM, but have you factored in the ice cream?

Brizzle (may I belatedly say that is a great username) "DD thinks late July for results. I hope she means late June!" I suspect it may be late July. Certainly DD say she will only have a week to revise for resits, scarey as failing the occassional exam is quite common on her course. I had though this was because they are sitting their exams so late, but it could equally be a University wide thing.

bigTillyMint · 31/05/2018 12:37

Have I missed that UoB are actually giving out free ice cream?!

brizzledrizzle · 31/05/2018 13:38

12-2pm today and tomorrow at the Senate House BTM

Needmoresleep thank you, I'm quite partial to Brizzle. Less so the drizzle. None so far today though, it's hot and humid here.

Eve · 31/05/2018 13:57

DS has his property law exam tomorrow - this law lecturer was his only 1 that took part in the strikes and therefore a lot of lectures were missed.

The lecturer has said no allowance will be made in the exam questions or in marking for this and told students if they don't like it take it up with the uni.

DS and his class are very cross over this, and think they are being used to make a point.

Xenia · 31/05/2018 16:07

"Have I missed that UoB are actually giving out free ice cream?!"

Really? You can't make this stuff up sometimes, so many places peddling sugar like a drug! Why can't it be something nice and for good for them?

bigTillyMint · 31/05/2018 18:54

Lol Xenia - what would you allow them to enjoy?Grin

Xenia · 31/05/2018 18:56

Don't worry, they won't listen to me anyway. I am just not a fan of people pushing free sugar on to everyone left, right and centre. Mind you alcohol is sugar too so I'm sure they've had their fair bit of that this year.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/05/2018 19:16

No it's not, but most alcoholic drinks contain sugar .

I'm firmly of the opinion that ice cream is good for emotional well-being. Like puppies... are any unis doing the dog destressing thing this year.

LittleSpace · 31/05/2018 19:48

I'm feeling guilty about the ice cream I had tonight now. It is very good for emotional well being. Only thing keeping me sane during A Levels, finals and first year exams.

brizzledrizzle · 31/05/2018 20:06

A bit of what you fancy and all that. I know what you mean though.

Talking of which, would you eat a tub of ice cream which had defrosted and frozen again? (Xenia, I know you probably wouldn't !) :-)

Horsemad · 31/05/2018 23:26

Newcastle did the puppy cuddling thing last year I believe and said they were having kittens too ☺️

Ice cream is ALWAYS acceptable in my world - whether I'm stressed or not!

DS had a 3hr exam yesterday and said it was 'ok'.

HSMMaCM · 01/06/2018 03:15

Eve - hope the exam goes ok. With any luck, the tutor was just making a point about the importance of independent study.

Xenia · 01/06/2018 07:17

Last exam for one of mine today of the term, I believe.

(Errol, very good point. Zero sugar although unless you have it all neat most people take a fair bit of sugar in with their alcohol and I am certainly not telling my children to move from ice cream to vodka for health reasons; I will shut up about sugar now)....

brizzledrizzle · 01/06/2018 07:20

They could have vodka ice cream ? Grin
Hope the exam goes well.

Xenia · 01/06/2018 07:26

Thanks and I hope everyone else whose children are doing exams this week find them okay. Now there's a thought for a new ice cream.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/06/2018 08:29

Vodka tastes of nowt, but I'm sure there's a gap in the market for artisanal gin ice cream with lots of lovely botanicals, or maybe sorbet would be better?

hellsbells99 · 01/06/2018 09:00

Just for you Errol

I've never had vodka so I didn't know that. I had a sloe gin ice cream once, 'twas delicious.

Awww, poor Twiglet.
